Keep us informed indeed.
Btw, I guess we now know one of the topics in the church of e-sports this sunday. :p

500 paying and watching or 20k+ free viewers...

I'd pay about 20 dollars per year for stream and vod access, and that would be more money than I've spent on television and radio combined in my entire life.
I mean literally I pay less per month for my 3mb/s internet connection than they want to charge for vod and stream.
Is there a stereotype about Americans being super rich in Korea? 600 dollars is about 1/20th of my total yearly income. : (

LOl i thought it was a joke when my friend first told me this,I mean, do they really think that a lot of people will fall for this? This is ridiculous.

Very unfortunate for esports.

I think this is where many of us are having problems with it. We're not saying that this tournament doesn't cost money to produce, but we are saying that the structuring of where GOM put its money seems kind of ludicrous. Do we have a comprehensive budget one-sheet of how GOM has spent this money? Do we have ANY detail on the "poor decisions" that have been made? Do we even know the justification as to WHY it's going to be this way? I mean, we've all speculated in this thread, but can you really say those things in confidence? I was just going off of your speculation that all the sponsor money went towards the prize pool. I felt as long as we were playing the speculation game that I could say that they probably made some poor decisions. Of course it could be completely justified that we have to pay so much, but I feel like the evidence doesn't point towards that. IEM and MLG didn't make me pay for an LQ stream and they don't seem to have gone bankrupt. Why couldn't GOM do something similar to what MLG and IEM did? I can't see what sort of extenuating circumstances would make GOM incapable of providing the same services that these smaller tournaments provided. That's why I suspect there's poor decision making involved. Perhaps if they offer a good explanation, I'll change my mind, but at the moment I'm more inclined to believe that they just goofed up and are asking me to foot part of the bill. Fair enough. I made the assumption because I doubt that GOM themselves have the money to create that sort of prize pool. I like your question about why couldn't GOM do something similar to MLG and IEM... and I wonder how much of it has to do with cultural differences. Do they really know the Western audience? Those are also two organizations who've clawed through years of BS to get to where they are today, and even they still respect the Western/European approach to Pro-Gaming... meaning, they know many of us have spent the past 4 years never having to pay for a damn thing. Coincidentally, I've purchased both MLG and ESL premium streams. By the way, do you understand that Koreans are getting this all for free?

I just really hope they drop the price to maybe 10$ a month for the stream+vods. That I be willing to pay. I'm just going to assume they are charging for the english stream because it cost more to run a english stream and this is how they want to cover the cost. but 50$ every month is just way way to much to watch SC2.

I'd be fine if I got to keep all the VODs for the season. If I'm buying something, I want something to have.

and here I thought GSL was good news for e-sports. Just kidding, just a money hungry company imo

they're working with blizz/act its prolly their idea... profit profit profit....
as the internet grows... most of the things that we think are free aren't free anymore... =(

I just like how the foreign fanbase is the one that gets screwed and has to pay absurd amounts for something a lot of Koreans who don't currently even give 2 shits about get for free. I'm pretty sure our community has been supporting GOM MUCH more from the beginning than the Korean scene. This whole deal just rubs me the wrong way..

After sleeping on it I think the worst thing is how they think they can treat us. If it costs a fucking penny I'm not going to pay it. I'll support them by watching their ads but that is it. They sprung this on us and then flat out lied about being in dire financial straits with the Kpop event of the year booked and exclusive SC2 rights from Blizzard still warm in their portfolio. This is not the way to court an audience, it's trying to strongarm money away from people without much, just like they're doing to Kespa.
I see right through the bastards. I can't believe that they would even try this shit...
EDIT: I also woke up to find this in my inbox
Removed. The friendly fellow from GOM asked that I remove his entire post. I am only sorry that I have been unable to edit this post before now. I apologize for any damage that I might have caused.
Nothing particularly new except the same things he did post on the forum. It seems like this fellow is very responsive, so if you have specific queries you might send him an email.
EDIT2: If they are actually in the red and need to make a certain amount from this there are so many better ways to do it than gouging foreigners. A 50 cents per replay download from US and Korea could make more money. A 2 dollar pass from US and KOR would make more. Making more from advertisers would probably make more. Cutting costs would increase profits, meaning cut one of the kpop acts or something. Even if everything they are saying is true it still is a slap in the face to foreigners. ...maybe a less ambitious broadcasting schedule, maybe cutting back on the prize pool for future tournaments, maybe selling broadcasting rights for the tournament to MBC...

This is disgusting. I honestly wouldn't mind if it was 50$ for like a YEAR, but a month? Seriously? That's 1/3 of what I spend on groceries.

Yes, people might ask Cella for their donations back so they can afford to watch his games in GSL!

Interesting to read thopol's post. I just hope that there's some response from GOMTV at large this morning KST.

I think GOMTV is misjudging the wealth of their target audience, i know that myself and all of my friends who play SC2 are not going to pay for a tournament stream when they can watch ESL and MLG events for free. Even if i wanted to pay i don't have that kind of money to spend something as trivial as this.

with the prize pool so high... they have all this problems?...
they're even doubling the prize pool next year(1million$)
doesn't make sense at all...
