I have no trouble using the pinky for shift at all. It doesn't bother after long SC2 sessions and it's not as if the shift key requires a large amount of force to press down. If anything, people are inherently used to using their left pinky to press shift and no one has the need to remap buttons away from their pinky so I don't see why using the thumb would improve shift key usage. It may be a stronger finger but I find that my thumb is no more quicker than my pinky. I was in the same boat after my first day of trying to use The Core. Like, wtf mate, pressing ctrl/shift/alt with the thumb is just weird. The best argument for using the thumb on ctrl/shift/alt is simply this: it frees up all 4 of your other fingers on the keyboard. With typical hotkey layouts, you have your thumb resting around space bar, and unless you are using space bar, you do not use your thumb whatsoever. So, for any commands that involve ctrl, shift, or alt, you have to use your pinky, and then you have 3 other fingers to press other keys. With TheCore, you have 4 fingers available to press hotkeys/cameras/abilities, etc. Is this a huge difference? No. Is it awkward to press ctrl/shift/alt with your thumb at first? Yes. Does it take a bit of extra learning time to get used to it? Yes. Is it worth it? For me, I think so. For everyone, I don't know. But I do think there is good reasoning behind the decision. this is a pretty good point that has probably gone understated. in a standard layout or Grid you dont use the thumb at all. using the Core is like getting an extra finger. you could say the arguments for the Core are unproven, but I feel they are sound. Making your fingers move less is faster. Keeping your hand in one position is better than stretching it all over the keyboard. Having ctrl groups 7 though 0 and most cameras out of reach is something we should want to fix. and things like Grid dont do the job. i've yet to hear of a person putting in the time to convert to the Core, and switching back. standard layouts and grid cannot claim to do anything better than the Core does. the only thing they have going for them is that they're familiar.

Very simple. You have multiple keyboard layouts active and ctrl-shift is the hotkey you have set up to switch between them. Change it to something else or turn it off.

It is hard to say if it will be released in full before HotS, when we don't know when HotS will be released. As far as HotS having an effect on TheCore, it will be minimal. @czar I'll check out the auto-ability stuff asap. Nice catch! :D EDIT: Hey guys, a ton of people of reddit have been giving me shit about not being in masters league, not being qualified to help people out, etc etc. I'm turning this negativity around and using it as an excuse to play more. Until all 3 accounts are in the Master's league I will prioritize playing over doing work on TheCore. Think of it as an extended test time where there will be very few if any changes to TheCore. I will still be reading all of your posts, as I always have, but after and inbetween playing, not before. After this phase is complete, we will likely be cracking right into the prep work to release TheCore 1.0. I hope you understand and respect this decision. See you around, JaK

@morik There will likely be very little changes between now and 1.0. But i'm not making any promises because new information may come to light that we've yet to take into account. The beta has been going on for about 2 months now, so I'd like to feel as though all the bugs are worked out, but who knows, maybe there is a way we can do a major change that will drastically increase efficiency. We will never stop improving when we can.

I'm a low level player and had stopped playing StarCraft after season one because I felt that I would never invest the time into getting any better. A friend of mine got me back into this game a little over three months ago and I quickly grew frustrated with the key layout and started a bad attempt at remapping the keys. A day later I found the core. I loved the challenge of re-learning the keys, it gave me a great excuse to lose and not feel like my strategy was bad! Since then I still have yet to learn all the unit controls and spell casting mechanics, but the basics of injecting, camera movement, and macro have become muscle memory and feel incredibly natural! Since then my APM has increased from an average of 30 to almost 90. All that to say, yes experience at a high level is important and I think it is a fantastic idea to for you to break into master with this layout. But know that this layout is good, smart, and anyone, at any level could stand to benefit from it if they wanted to invest the time to learn. Again, thanks. (And I look forward to watching you wind up in Masters before long!)
