So I'm a new player. I used to play Terran, then I switched over to Protoss, however, I've always been interested in learning how to play Zerg. I feel as a SC2 player you should be familiar with all the races. I've been reading up on some simple strategies and such, but coming from a P and T player, the hotkeys are my worst enemy. For anyone who has switched, did you find it hard to adapt to the new/different hotkeys?
Also, another main problem is my macro. I need to absolutely work on it more. It's good for the first I'd say 10 minutes, then the mines and gas get WAY out of hand after that, and I can only build as fast and constantly as my silly brain tells me to.
I also have a problem using my hotkeys, I find myself using only hotkeys 1-4 (even if that), and for some reason I cannot hotkey areas (using the f-keys).
What was your guys biggest downfall to this game when you first started? How did you change your playstyle? I know practice is an absolute given, but I can only play/practice 2-3 days out of the week, as well as a few hours for that.

Hey =) I was just wondering why in pro games I never see Terran use tanks vs Protoss? Is it mobility issues, because they have 4 more range than collosus if im recalling correctly? Thanks!

Almost every unit Protoss has does well vs tank compositions. Tanks are used almost exclusively in all-ins where early on Protoss has unupgraded gateway units/little tech which is where tanks shine the most.
That's not to say they can't be used regularly in TvP -- just not at that high of a level.

I think this is a multitasking and priority issue. Play multitasking trainers, and realise that macro is the biggest issue. So if you have to choose between macro and micro (or anything else), go for macro.
What do you mean you cant use f-keys? Cant get used to it, or cant because of some setting issue? (f-keys are great. They really help me out).
I think you have to practice with purpose. That is, dont just play games. Have a goal with your games. Getting that entire build down, working on not getting supplyblocked. Spamming to increase fingerspeed. Play against specific style or pushes over and over again. Multitasking trainer (really, it helps).

Is there an optimal number of queens to have for larva injecting purposes in the late game. To elaborate, should I be getting queens at my fifth, sixth, etc. base (one queen per base) to do larva injects too, or is that just overkill in terms of production and just a waste of supply?

I typically use 5 queens to inject in the midgame, dropping down to 2-3 in the lategame. However, queens are really good, so I'd recommend having 5-6 queens for transfuse lategame! Ultras are even better when they don't die :D and transfusing a broodlord gives you a HUGE amount of money given it's only a 50 energy spell. So injecting would be a waste of production, but queens aren't a waste of supply. A 2 supply unit that can heal 600HP of any type of unit.

Thanks for your answer Transfuse is pretty good indeed haha. I tend to find myself just injecting all game with the 4-5 queens I have though. Now that I gave it a few more thoughts, it seems like a stupid question coz I suppose it's dependent on your unit compositions. LIke a broodlord infestor army probably needs more transfuse and less larvae, whereas a ultralisk zergling type of army would require a ton more larvae, or something like that. Oh well.

Where can i go to learn more information about how to read what I scout?
|
On September 12 2012 23:09 Ranger13 wrote: Where can i go to learn more information about how to read what I scout?
That depends on what race you are sir. but if you just search for the various matchups there are close to comprehensive guides for each of them, depending on the opening you choose. For example, if you are doing early pressure builds, people often don't bother to scout for all ins because they will have enough units to deal with them anyway.
If give us some information we might be able to give you some more specific example for you.

When doing marine hellion elevator in tvt. Should I make reactor on rax? If yes, it should be placed after factory or before factory? Should I make reactor on factory? Need build order to this strategy.

This information isn't really centralized to offer a single source that might answer all questions concerning scouting (at least that I know of).
Someone may have a better answer if you could provide a race/match-up, or even some builds you want help with/against. Otherwise, for the basic, most general method to determining an opponent's build with limited to no info, I'd recommend checking out Day9's dailies. He has a few where he covers scouting in different match-ups and explains the thought process behind exacting an opponent's build. It's covered in a ton of episodes not specifically dedicated to scouting too, though I don't remember any off of the top of my head other than the one I found with a quick google search: + Show Spoiler +

If you are Zerg, Belial's guides are pretty good for this. For example the ZvP guide has sections called "scouting the Protoss" and "Identifying the Build".

I just found out about chanman's vids for zerg. I used to love 12 weeks with the pros. Are there any other vids like these even for other races? I used to be mid masters and 12 weeks helped me a ton.
day9's stuff is good and I watched it, but it wasn't as informative and I only have so much time to watch stuff now versus before where I watched everything.

How do you scout a 7 gate proxy in TvP?

I was active last season. My portrait area said play one match to be placed this season...I did that, but did not receive placement. Why?

After playing a few games with Zerg, I finally got used to the hotkeys. As for the f-keys I figured it out, I didn't realize that the f-keys started at f5, not f1 like I had thought.
Are there built in Multi-tasking trainers in the game? If not, what are some good ones that you recommend.
As far as the "practice with purpose" I never realized that. My biggest fear is that I'll practice, lets say Macro. If I get that down, and I try to practice something else, I feel like I'll just throw the macro game out of the window.

what is the timing of cloaked banshee? when should I have turrets in my base in TvT when he goes rax, fac, starport without expansion?

Does anyone else ever have problems with ctrl-shift click?
This is what happens. I have a ctrl group selected, I try to ctrl-shift click out a type of unit by ctrl-shift-clicking its portrait, and it absolutely does NOT work, no matter how many times I keep clicking. I'm not saying this happens all the time, it is somewhat rare, but when it happens it is extremely frustrating. If this is happening, the only way I can get it to work is to select something else (another ctrl group, a single unit, etc), then re-select the ctrl group again. ctrl-shift click will usually work this time. I have noticed this in HotS as well as WoL.
Is this a bug? Or am I causing it somehow? Has anyone else experienced it?

That's what I thought too, but it happened to me once and I slowed down and experimented. I let go of the keys, repressed. I pulled the keys up, tried again. I pressed and held the keys down super hard. Nothing worked. Then I selected something else, went back, and it worked. That's what makes me think it might be a software issue.
