No. Communism works in theory, but not in practice. If you think about it it's not that hard to come up with reasons why communism in Soviet, China, Cuba or whatever doesn't make for the best society. There are lots of flaws like the lack of freedom, not too efficient economic system etc so it's not perfect in theory at all. If you talk about some pure marxist theory you can't really say there has been a society modeled after it. (And of course it shouldn't be too hard to find weak points in it either given it's 150 years old.) edit: spelling

If it's used where the person is saying something like, "It may or may not make a difference.." as if they are unsure, does that bother you? Because that's the only time it would really make sense to me to use it. It's not really a phrase or anything, but I hate when people pronounce antifreeze as "antefreeze," that drives me nuts. I hate the saying "I'm going to grab a bite to eat," or any variation of that. It's so stupid... So you only had ONE bite of food, did you? Why not just say "I stopped to get something to eat?" I also hate it when people say "guess what" and then don't allow me to guess; it's mostly used in a situation where guessing isn't even needed.

My peeve: Using the word "literally" incorrectly. It is NOT meant to be used to strengthen your point. It doesn't mean "VERY"... it means LITERALLY, as in, NOT FIGURATIVELY. and as someone said, sportscasters are the worst offenders. Also, only people in New England will get me when I say this, but "I'm all set" This is what every person in a restaurant or store will say to you and it's totally frigging ambiguous. They come up to you ... "are you all set?" Um, do you mean that I am all set cause I don't need anything else, or do you mean I am all set to order my food? Jeebus... and it's so pervasive here that I find myself saying it back to people. Damn them all to hell. By the way, good thread ![]()

There are tons of people who do that down here, too. It doesn't bother me too much, because normally it's pretty obvious what they're talking about. "Are you all set to go?" etc..

"Do you have a condom?" Biggest cock block phrase ever. Or the classic "let's just be friends". "I'm having my period..." "I have a headache".

The real question is if you can forsee those things in theory (and thus proving your point, that it isnt a valid " works in theory .." ) , or if you forsee those things, but it still manages to go wrong? Can you have pure communism in one country and capitalism (is that the right word? freely translating from swedish here ![]() Edit - some smiley who wasnt suppose to be there.

Hmm, where do you live? I always thought it was a New England thing but I've only spent a lot of time on the coasts. If people say "Are you all set to go?" that's a lot better I think, because it's clearer what they mean. Why can't people say "Can I get you anything else?" or "Are you ready to order?" or some other phrase of the same length that is more specific? oh well.

the "i could care less" versus "i couldn't care less" is simply people mis-saying the phrase

you're = contraction for you are your = possessive indicating ownership Similarly, its and it's is along the same lines - its = possessive, it's = it is Similar to "I couldn't care less", "For all 'intensive' purposes" is incorrect - it should be "For all intents and purposes." Also, you don't "wet your appetite" or "peak your interest", its "whet your appetite, pique your interest"
