I always thought shotgun referred to sitting in the passenger seat so you can lean out the window and shoot preferrably with a shotgun. I know that's not exactly why people say it, but that's the root of it. | ||

Hence the term riding shotgun was born, so whenever someone wanted to call front passenger seat in the car, they called "SHOTGUN". From there it just spread to everything else I guess. | ||
