Bad things (besides a ban) should happen to people who say this. I actually can't believe anyone could be so rude as to say it at all, anywhere, ever.

Please stop thinking you are better than other people because you know physics better than they do. P.S. Seriously a lot of people in this thread need to start reading between the lines (but that's impossible, isn't it?). You are not being smart by picking on evident stuff, it's quite the opposite. Pounds are actually a measure of force, not of mass, so saying you weigh 160lb is correct. But, yeah, if it bothers you to hear people talk of 'weighing' 50kg, just imagine they said they have weigh the same as 50kg. The information conveyed is clear, even if they didn't properly use the technical terms. Uhh, no. That's completely wrong. Pound is a measure of mass, not force. The definition of a pound is 0.453kg. In physics, the Force of weight in imperial is measured in pound-force (lbf). That said, correcting someone on saying weight in real life is being a pedantic dick.

And since we are on earth, one newton = 9.8 kg. Until we become an interplanetary civilization I don't see a need to distinguish mass vs weight outside of physics related work. It's more like this: There's 5 possible places it can be, and it's in the 5th one. A more proper saying would be "It's always in the last possible spot" but then people would nitpick that and say it's not really the last possible spot because there's infinite spots.

Seriously I saw one of my friends with an album of Team Fortress 2 screen shots with a title of "I'm so nerdy." C'mon, if you were playing Dwarf Fortress, I could see what you're talking about. But Team Fortress is a cartoony FPS. The only nerdy thing about it is that it's on a computer, and it's not the 80's anymore, computers aren't just for nerds. Here, let me give a couple of examples of nerdy vs not nerdy: Watching the Big Bang Theory - Not nerdy Solving Calculus problems in your free time - Nerdy Playing Legend of Zelda - Not nerdy Installing Arch Linux on a Raspberry Pi - Nerdy Reading Comic books - Not nerdy Writing Regular expressions - Nerdy Playing a Tabletop RPG - Not nerdy Looking up Latin and Greek roots of words - Nerdy Things I listed in the "not nerdy" category may be things nerds also enjoy. But that's not what makes them nerdy. And you can certainly enjoy all those things without being nerdy at all. But the things I listed in the second category are different. A guy who isn't nerdy at all will just not do any of the things in the "nerdy" category if he doesn't have to.

But isn't that simply a lot of things that have gotten mainstream over the years? Or at least the respective sub-cultures have become increasingly more popular. When I was in school people might have known who Bilbo or Gollum was because our grade 3 teacher would read it every year. But if I mentioned 'Frodo' I would get funny or blank looks. After the movies...

I get that there are a lot of popular trends in word use that are really annoying, "nerdy" being a good example, but your standard for what counts as nerdy is incredibly arbitrary and vain. This is one of those times where coming up with some formula is pretty silly; as any real nerd will you tell you, you'll know one when you see one ![]()
