Should I create a word-list full of short phrases, or is that a bad way to go about learning/practicing grammar?

I was suspicious of 成果 as "accomplishment/achievement" -- which isn't wrong, but isn't quite right. However, when it said that ~系 means "system," I knew I had to stop before I got corrupted. Obviously it's hard to convert such versatile kanji into a simple English definition, but it's just not useful to memorize the meaning "system". I mean, you'll generally encounter this in structures like アフリカ系アメリカ人, and it obviously doesn't mean "system" there. Honestly, this is not useful. If you want to learn a language, get books and study. These games may make you feel like you're making progress, because playing a game is easier than studying, but the "meanings" they assign the words and phrases are completely without context and really totally useless -- at least in such a context-dependent language. That's my warning, anyway. Good luck. 1) Playing a game is easier than studying, which is precisely why so many people have learnt so much due to this game. 2) Anyone who is serious wouldn't rely solely on this game, because it only adresses 1 part of language learning. 3) Tell me a language that isn't context dependant ........... Like Tim Minchin said about fingers haha "But if I say I finger your mom.."

You can find that thread here: http://www.memrise.com/forum/bugs/257/one-word-wont-stop-wilting/ As I posted in that thread, there seems to be some sort of bug with the timing mechanism. A number of the "watering" timings which appear in my "garden" are nonsensical. If anyone has any temporary fixes, that would be wonderful. [Memrise co-founder here] Hey there, I'm sorry about this. We're aware of the issue, and we've set aside tomorrow to look into it. In the meantime, you can route around the issue by: - intermixing learning a different wordlist OR - clicking on the wordlist, then 'More learning options / New words only' OR - clicking on the wordlist, then 'Garden / Healthy / Water now' Again, apologies. This edge case slipped past our testing. We read all the feedback we receive, but we're not quite able to keep up with responding at the moment! I think you know why. Yours, Greg

1) Mad prop about allowing sole keyboard navigation! Without having to use a mouse, the speed increases dramatically. BUT keyboard use (1,2,3,4 for multiple choice) doesn't work properly in Safari. Anyone with the same issue? 2) Is it possible to have some kind of indication about which word list has pronunciation available? I think pronunciation and sentence examples are two very important features that should be made available more widely asap. TL-LaDilettante (French)

I already have a pretty good Korean vocabulary, but due to the nature of grammar (specifically Korean grammar), it won't be much help in a spoken situation unless I'm able to conjugation it right in the correct Subject-object-verb order with the correct grammar markers. Should I create a word-list full of short phrases, or is that a bad way to go about learning/practicing grammar? [Memrise co-founder here] Yeah, this is a 24-carat idea, though not without its complications! One option is to add the sample sentences as mems. If you come up with a way to generate lots and lots of sample sentences, send them to ben@, and he'll help you mass-upload them. Alternatively, I like the idea of adding short phrases as a new wordlist. I've played around with this myself, and it works reasonably well, but nowhere near perfectly. One quick tip - in case you didn't realize, you can actually add 'parents' to words to form a dependency graph (think of it like prerequisites for classes). So, for instance, in English, you might say that the word 'StarCraft' has 'Star' and 'Craft' as parents, i.e. words that you need to learn before you learn 'StarCraft'. So you could add the individual words as parents to the phrase that contains them. Here's how to do it: - Creating a new wordlist: http://www.memrise.com/set/create - Add/search for the phrase and its constituent words - Head to the page for the new phrase, e.g. http://www.memrise.com/item/168032/star-10/ - Under 'Related', click 'Depends on' and add the individual words as parents - Go back to your wordset, hit 'Edit', then 'Fix dependencies'. This will add all the parent words and reorder things so that you learn the individual words first. [It's still a beta feature, so might be buggy] That way, you can structure your learning to start with pieces and build into larger compounds. If that didn't make sense, just say so. This is the first time I've tried to explain it in writing ![]() There's one possible stumbling block to this plan - we've recently tightened up the permissions for editing. If this is proving a problem, email ben@ and he might be able to help you. Yours, Greg

TL-LaDilettante (French) [Memrise co-founder here] I agree - we're working on adding pronunciation as fast as humanly possible. We have good tools behind the scenes for mass-uploading audio, so if you know any native speakers who would be willing to help us record audio for just an hour or two, email ben@ - he'd love to talk to you!

Anyways, during a shower I just took (where I do all my deep thinking), I mentally went through some comments and suggestions that you may or may not consider (or probably already considered): I feel like Memrise is great as a learning tool and you've obviously put a lot of work into understanding the science behind vocabulary accumulation and retention, but i feel it has so much more potential as an addictive interactive game similar to something like farmville. I feel like more "achievements" would go a long way to making the site more addicting. The scoreboard is great, but for someone with pretty limited time, getting even close to the leader-boards is a huge investment. And being rank 6045 isn't much more rewarding than being rank 7592. Why not make points a sort of currency with which you can buy (completely meaningless or superficial) rewards? Or assign users certain "levels" with certain (again completely meaningless or superficial) perks? Better yet, do both! This would give people goals to work towards. Having "300 words" isn't that much exciting than having '250' words, but being promoted from "Korean vocab idiot lvl 3" to "Korean vocab Padawan lvl 4" is pretty cool (PS: Please make atleast one rank title "jedi" :D), especially if I get an icon along with the promotion. If you look at popular addictive games, they often use a similar system of achievements to reward dedication. World of Warcraft players will 'grind' (do repetitive, dull tasks) for hours just to gain a level and get "+2% frost damage" or something similar. Even in starcraft, many people play games largely to obtain the icons you get when you get "100 wins" or something similar. Obviously this should take a backseat to actually getting the fundamental learning program up to the high standards you've set for yourself, but it would be a great direction to move in for the future.

Over beers one evening, we came up with a plan for a ranking system, ranging from Membryo all the way up to Memperor. You've almost convinced me we should revive it... ![]()
