My guess would be that it should be less problematic, as more of the electricity should go through the water instead of the body. Maybe there are some additional surface burns right where the taser attaches, as more current takes the route right across the skin. Am i incorrect in this accessment? And for the case of the drowning person? Just throw them a lifering, a rope, or basically anything else. I am pretty sure that jumping into the water and letting them drown you too is in general not recommended.

Is tasing someone in the water actually more problematic then just tasing them? If they are drowning and struggling, then yes.

For the sake of argument, let's assume that it's a panicking person that can't swim caught in deep water not too far away from the beach, and you are swimming out equipped with only a (water proof) taser. The reason why you are carrying a (water proof) taser is left for the reader to imagine here. Should you use the taser, or try to rescue without using the taser?

the rest is a matter of what kind of taser and what kind of water. - if the taser fires electrodes into the victim, there's nothing much that gets amped by the water itself since the charge passes from one electrode to the other(nor it will pass from one person to another). (note here: due to skin porosity, while in the water, the (local)contact surface between the electrode and the body will increase Xfold so the burn on the impact point will be upped by a degree.) - if the taser is a melee-kind of taser(a baton or w/e they're called) and you manage to somehow ground a pole through the salt water while in it, shit could get really bad really fast.

In the sea, you definitely won't sink like a rock (although you'll drown because your head will go underwater). Hell, you even have a decent amount of buoyancy in fresh water. In fact, if people drowning in the sea would just relax and take a big breath and lie on their back, a lot less people would drown.

Also, I remember reading that electricity will go through the path of least resistance and will tend to just go through water instead of going through things in the water.

Mostly true. A majority of the current will go through the path of least resistance, while increasingly smaller amounts will go through all possible paths in relation to the resistance of that path. If you are interested in understanding how this works, take a look at what happens to the flow of electricity when you take different resistors and place them in parallel. If it goes through water or the stuff in the water thus depends on the resistance of the things in the water, and on the resistance of the water itself, which is related to how much salt and other things there are in the water. Distilled water does not conduct electricity at all.
