If you think you might like the game, don't let the whiners deter you, at least try open beta and see if you like it. People canceling their preorders because they can't play the game nonstop without any issues in beta are just ridiculous. Don't compare this to any other FF than XI, seriously, this game as it stands now is miles below the usual standard.

like billyx333 said, this game is just a different type of appeal. it doesnt have anything laid out really, you just wander around and try to find out what to do. a lot of trial and error. i kind of like it =) i think people are being too hard on it... targeting really isnt that hard, the battle system is generally interesting, the main quests lines are quirky (good or bad), its just the lag that sucks. which will get fixed eventually (or we can hope). but its bearable at most times. if youre having second thoughts after reading the thread (because i sure did), try to get into the open beta and give it a whirl with no preconceptions. my experience was almost killed by all the negativity, but now im glad that i didnt say no when my friend asked me to play with him.

I won't even start on combat with 2-3 second latency; could not figure out wtf was going on half the time. Everything shure is purdy though...and music is beautiful. Too bad it's gonna fail.

I made a character starting in each city to see their openings/area. Gridania wins that competition, by the way. It may have something to do with the number of people in each zone, but once I was past the initial opening and out in the field doing leves, Gridania felt the most crowded (instead of an open area, it has forest "clearings" connected by narrow pathways, which leads to people being closer together). Didn't spend much time in Limsa Lominsa since the Roegadyn I made looks like a retard. Combat in both of those areas had some noticeable lag, as in press attack several times and see no animation and then 5-10 seconds later they all happen at once. The open area around Ul'dah didn't seem to have that combat lag. Also, the monsters at Gridania royally buttfucked my Pugilist several times even though they're part of the first quests you get (stumbling funguars, I shall have my revenge!). Largely because the assholes usually have 2 friends that come over and beat the shit out of you when you hit one of them. Also had some problems with "invalid targets" there when trying to attack, which I think was someone else tagging the monster and then running away/dying. Since the area is so compact it's easier for that to happen there (ran into it in other areas, just not as much). It doesn't really handhold you on a linear quest, per se (essentially, here's a quest but you're a free-spirit adventurer so you don't have to do it) but thus far each town does have some kind of story line arc, besides all the side stuff. Reading the journal has been sufficient to know where to go when so far. Torrenting patch files seems to be the way to go. Official downloader is only to get the torrent filename, then close it. Waaaaay faster that way. I almost thought it was gonna work today on the latest updates, but it stalled out at 94.6% on the first update for 5 minutes so I just closed and torrented away. Also, seems today's patch improved some of the mouse lag. Not super precise, but not as laggy as it was last night (or I'm just imagining it).

Another option for people frustrated with mouse lag or high system requirements is to wait for the PS3 version this spring. FFXI's controls felt pretty odd on the PC but were really intuitive on the 360, and it looks like XIV's controls are also better suited to a controller. Buying a PS3 on ebay is cheaper than sacking up for a new computer as well.

conclusion: awful, in so many hundreds of ways things that don't suck: music, graphics things that do suck: everything else this game is so unpolished its like playing a lump of coal... but it looks nice! to all the fanboys waving around the "ITS STILL IN BETA, JESUS" argument, i have to say that there is no way that this game will be anywhere near good in only 25 days
