A lot of games with significant online components warrant a re-review after massive overhauls, that's a pretty good point.
If they do what they say they're going to do the game might be worth a try.

I tried it again a month or so ago. It was still awful. The way you level up, the combat itself, the levequests, the repairing/crafting, the player run bazaar system.... I don't know what they can do to make it a passable MMO. I paid for the collectors edition and I'm super upset about it even to this day. So god damn terrible. If they overhaul everything but the graphics, they might have a chance to make a good game. However, that is not cost effective at all.

In terms of cost effective - They recently stated they were surprised at how well FFXI made them money over the years since release. They want to do it again with FFXIV.
This time though they have Naoki Yoshida the determinator and unlimited funds (whoever is in the charge a the top decided "put everything into it!").
They apparently have over 250 people working on FFXIV (as opposed to much less before and as opposed to the maybe 5 people currently working on FFXI >.>).
They have worked on the new engine for about a year already in the background.
Also unlike Tanaka (the previous director), Yoshida (new director) listens to the fan base and plays several MMORPGs and other games (including WoW, Diablo, etc). He can be trusted.
They also already admit the game is currently only 50% complete (well 50% before it can be compared to other MMOs) so they know they do have a lot of work ahead.
FFXIV started out messy but they're definitely doing their best to rebuild it.
Not saying FFXIV will be great for sure but don't give up on the game yet. Check back next year when 2.0 is released to see how far things changed.
As for gameplay, they haven't introduced the meat of the changes yet. It'll be 1.2 and 1.21 before they implement their major gameplay changes (for example they haven't implemented "Jobs" yet. Jobs being similar to FFXI but added on top of the existing Class system).

I really want to play this once its not awful. Once they release it for PS3 will show they have confidence in it.

I'm definitely in the camp that wants to see this game eventually succeed. It's appalling that they finally just now consider the game half done and it's damn near a year out since release. I would've loved to have thought SE was simply better than that in the post-Vanguard/WAR/AoC apocalyptic MMO landscape, but wtf, guess not, lol.
The more good MMOs there are, the better the genre as a whole will become. When simply copy/pasting the WoW formula isn't enough any more, you have an entire genre in bad need of innovation if not renovation. I made this point several times on the FFXIVCore boards and I make it again here.
Between TOR, WildStar, Secret World, and the proposed changes to FFXIV, the evolution of the modern MMO seems nigh at hand. Can't wait to see what comes out on the other side.

Just got a new email about their plans for redoing the game.. They're going to charge before showing me solid content? Not giving them a cent until I see real proof that it won't suck. I loved FFXI, and this game is a sham in comparison.

This game gives "hot mess" a whole new meaning. Soundtrack is excellent though, some tracks are right up there with FF6 and FF7, and it's pretty awesome to hear how Uematsu's style has developed as a result of his time with a rock group.
You can hear the entire thing on http://grooveshark.com.

I'm currently playing this with what i could call 'endgame' Linkshell. Its ok not the most fun i've ever had playing a MMO, but their is still a fair bit of content and my Linkshell is a lot of fun Ifrit with archers? :D still not killed him with that set up yet :'(.
The 2.0 info gave most of the people i spoke to hard-ons. I suppose the main reason i will still play after charges kick in is for the job system and because of the additional content, It comes faster than most current mmo's so i can't complain about having nothing to do
