This worked for me:
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1863/mirrors.php
download all of those files, put them in C: > Users > Name > Documents >My Games > Final Fantasy XIV Beta Version > downloads > ffxiv-beta > d96437e6 > patch
Then run the game and it will recognize and update.

FFXIV download
This worked really well for me, used about 20 min on downloading all the files. I reccomend a download manager as one of the files kept finishing before it was done.
just put em in C: > Users > Name > Documents >My Games > Final Fantasy XIV Beta Version > downloads > ffxiv-beta
and use winrar to extract.

My client keeps closing itself. No error, no windows message. Just disappear :/

Although I have been reading this thread and a tad alarmed at the comments from people stating that the game is not very responsive / hard to control. Also, it's clear that PvP is not in the game at all...I'd still be interested in the PvE if it's well-done, but I'm picking up some bad vibes so far...

I'll be honest, I enjoy it alot and have high hopes /gasp!
If your looking for PvP, this isnt it, simple as.
All the menu lag, difficult controls and responsiveness issues are obviously going to be picked up on in due course. They exist right now but people need to stop QQing over it and see the big picture.
The fact is, this game is very slow to start, but I've played a bunch of MMOs and the only one you can compare this truely to is FFXI. FFXI had an insanely slow start to it as well but everyone and anyone who played the game for any real period of time knew the fun picked up around level 30ish when party roles became much more defined and relevant. Dont expect to be going into this game throttling through the levels and quests, it wont happen so dont get your hopes up.
I dont know what partying is going to be like at higher levels but I'd bet a good amount of money that party cooperative play is going to be a huge part of the game, most likely party grinding too (ironically one of the things I enjoyed about FFXI, TEAMWORK!)
Give the beta a try, and if you dont feel it now, wait for the PS3 release in march and see what its like then.

PvP not being there is perfectly fine, in my book, which I explained to one of my friends who was more of a battleground player in WoW.
PvP attracts a certain type of player, many of whom have no interest in PvE and don't enjoy it. A good portion of this crowd will do PvE anyway if it helps them PvP (aka, raid to get gear to go roll newbs with - not uncommon in WoW). I'd much rather do PvE content with people that enjoy it than with someone that sees it as a chore in the way of their PvP fun.
That isn't to say that there aren't players that enjoy both/are good at both. Just that I won't particularly miss the standard PvP crowd.
Got a beta key... now I just have to figure out how to get the game on to my computer with my slow internet along with the half dozen plus patches. I knew there was a reason I didn't like PC gaming. -.-
|
Played FFXIV beta for a bit. Game is pretty, combat system is innovative and stresses on positioning (big plus), but the interface is a crock of shit and ruined just about the entire game for me. The quest instructions are as cryptic as trying to read the Koran and for a PvE-only MMO, ruins the game entirely.
Also, mouse lag sucks. The interface is so obviously skewed for controllers and console retards and is an obvious slap to the face for PC gamers. Not so sure if I really want to buy this game.

I had a closed beta client and recently received my registration code for open beta. When I started my closed beta client it downloaded and updated a few patches.
Now, when I try to start the game it brings up the login menu but when I enter my info I just get "Maintenance" message. My account is active because a friend logged in with my info to test and works fine for him.
ANYONE have any ideas how I can fix this? The updater file in my beta folder does nothing. I'd rather not download the full client again -_-

I'm on the fence now...i might go and cancel my preorder or something
i don't mind the control system and UI...my biggest concern is their ability to handle the amount of ppl playing because the server lag is atrocious.
can't even play normally
I was hoping to play this to kill time too...oh well, back to getting my ass handed to me in SC2

I got the key downloaded the game, made the account, patch the game, log on, and everytime i log on i get a page that says maintenance.
So I uninstalled the game, reinistalled the game, patch the game log on, it says maintanance.
so much frustration

dont even bother, its not even worth it..
its sad that they're charging people to play the PC version, it's trash, id rather play runescape.

After going through all the trouble of downloading the patches and setting it up, I was going to give my opinion on how disappointing it was but you saved me the trouble.
The mouse lag really kills it for me, combined with the tiny interface icons just makes it not a fun experience.
Moving around feels like I'm moving through treacle, and although it has probably been mentioned already you can't jump, which makes movement feel very restrictive and on rails. A lot of invisible fences everywhere, I want to jump down from a forest path into a glade and there's an invisible wall of air blocking me forcing me to follow a predetermined path to get there.
All in all the game is missing a significant level of polish, after 15 minutes in the beta I had had enough.

Agreed. This is going to tank on release harder than APB.

Just got a key, patching atm, done in about 2 hours. Is it true that there is no PvP at all in this game?

Ok so i just tried this game for a Day and my first impression : Hmm graphics looks nice wait wtf is this? cut scene :O erm ok wait lol im in a boat hahaha messed up UI!! this is not a game for PC its more console game hence why xbox ps3 is better for this.
Pros : Nice graphic beats wow, aion and other games thats out there. detailed land - its not like any other shitty MMORPG ive played( trust me i played alot of those) but the landscape is beautiful and looks smooth if you ignore the 490295players there :> its only beta. Emotes - I have not seen many MMORPG that have done a great job with emotes and i must say that this game has the best emotes detailed you can tell that they really want players to emote lol. You can have surnames : Ive already seen justin bieber /suicuide and other famous names but shitloads of japanease names i don't watch anime but im pretty sure ive heard ichigo, naruto sailor moon uchiha and those characters from forums etc. Seems to much roleplaying for my taste but for others i heard they loved it. Char Creation - Ok i think we all remembered Aion when they did a nice job at this ive seen lots of players that have done amazing characters that looks very cool (mostly females chars) Job - I liked this idea of the job its not hard to understand but im still confused about the fatigue of this. Grind - we don't want a game to be easy or too hard but i did not encounter too much grind in this game ive seen people whine about grind but honestly this is sooo easy im not suprised if its kids whining about this.
Cons: it's just impossible to target... quest etc one of the reason why this is more suited for xbox ps3. ALOT Cutscenes - If you are a hardcore Final fantasy fan and roleplayer this will be suited for you because it seems they focus more about your Character history rather than go pew pew. can't take shortcuts! - I Swear i have never been so mad at a game that i can't even jump down here( BTW you cant jump) to get off this cliff/mountain so onces again they want you to WALK miles and be interactive with players. Spell Animations : I swear if i wanted to see someone perform a ritual and 5sec later cast a spell i rather play a low budget game. Run forest run! - With that being said alot of the quests requires you to go to B from A to C! this is so annoying you just realised you ran all the way to a town and than you had to run back and come back again! ( If you pre order collector edition you get a +movement speed boots so thats good) No pvp - I focus alot on PVE on many mmorpgs but seriously we get tired of that if you run the same raid instance over and over don't you want to pwn people at battle grounds for the sake of it or just get cool looking pvp gear? im sorry there is no pvp here so if you are hardcore pvp dont get this. Ati cards : Same thing with Sc2 FPS DROPS!! i noticed lag here and there it seems nvidia has problem with this aswell but not as much as ATI cards. Future driver arrive now plx. Mouse : So annoying you have to try the game to understand what i mean sorry. UI hotkeys - just messed no way its good. invisible blocks here and there - its only beta but i just got annoyed. no auto attack - dont even have to ellobrate.
Im pretty sure there are alot of cons and probably a few pros but i got sick of this game i canceled my preorder and im not a stupid wow fanboy i actually played the old final fantasy online and i enjoyed it but thats because this game PC Version seems way unfinished i swear its like they are mocking us and laugh at us when we try to play this on pc version. The closed beta gave alot of feedbacks to improve pc version what happend? they completely ignored it... they said we know this is a known issue we try to improve this for our players bla bla etc. seems like they did jack shit.
So im Waiting for Tera online GW2 hopefully one of those will not be a failure :/

If you hate lag then dont even attempt to play this game until the ps3 launch IMO I secretly think the early PC launch is pretty much just an extended beta as the game isnt really complete yet people forget its beta because the launch is so near but really so many features are completely missing right now beyond the lag, i really have no complaints; a lot of the features are not implemented yet most of the whiners here are really over dramatic with their over the top emotional ranting
the interface and lag are the only reasonable and objective complaining points IMO, sometimes in mid battle my character will freeze and not execute any commands while other times its perfectly fine all the servers are based in japan(same as ffxi), sadly i dont think thats going to change
whining about not being able to jump up/down certain cracks/cliffs is nit picking at best i got used to this within a day of playing the game and have absolutely no problems with it
as hardcore gamers many of you probably have personal standards of in game productivity well you're going to be incredibly frustrated with final fantasy its not about the destination, its about the journey. most people hate being puzzled or lost but I actually really like it the worlds are huge (long travel distances some times) the quests and the crafting techniques/system/recipes are all incredibly obscure and take time to decipher (square doesnt help or give any hints, the gamers have to figure everything out on their own)
conclusion - the game and interface is laggy as hell and it probably will be at launch, this is probably the #1 problem and if you hate the obscurity in the quests/crafts/battle systems/crafting recipes then you'll hate this game if you feel the need to be very productive in the games you play (like out doing everybody with your level/gear) and feel the need to be efficient with your time, you will be very very frustrated the journey is the fun part, not the destination it takes a lot of trial and error to realize what mobs are good/bad to farm which direction leads where and which mobs aggro/1 shot you there is no published guide or database yet, if you're easily frustrated dont play

What server are you TL guys on?

OK, well I can't get neither the benchmark nor the main file to run on my Windows 7 laptop. "This program has stopped working," etc. Trying to download it again, meanwhile any ideas, or is there someplace I can go to get help? Already downloaded the 4 gig of patches from one of the links provided above :/.
Edit: looks like it may be my ATI Catalyst version; checking to see if this fixes it now.

Pretty what I think about the game too. I didn't play FFXI, but I have enjoyed FFIV so far. If you think you might like the game, don't let the whiners deter you, at least try open beta and see if you like it. People canceling their preorders because they can't play the game nonstop without any issues in beta are just ridiculous.
