I guess maybe I'm looking for an MMO that actually has some action in it, since this game was mostly running around from what I did. I spent about 3 hours doing the quests, and I was only level 4 or so. I wanted to go out in the fields to hunt some, and there just seemed to be no monsters to kill, and when I finally saw one, two people came up and killed it before I could get to it.
I don't see this game doing too well, especially after what happened with the open beta keys, the "fatigue" thing, and just how clunky this beta feels. Maybe hardcore fans will like it, but it's not going to appeal to a vast majority of what MMO players want.
totally agree
i quit after the first quest, since the targeting system was so annoying and just walking to the quest took like 8 minutes....
also the cutscenes, I mean, its ok for a rpg and I can understand people who like minutes of cutscenes and choosing conversation paths, but it just doesn't suit my taste not mý kind of mmo, perhaps other people will enjoy it more I agree. Boring and slow game. Story could be nice, but i will never know.

Tab targeting is really clutch if you are having any sort of targeting problems.
Cutscenes can now be skipped in the open beta.

Hoping I'll like this game, as I don't wanna go back to WoW: Cata as my MMO due to the playerbase (probably wouldn't be as bad if I found a good guild, but I'm not good at finding something like that). Hell, I might even pick up Runescape again if FFXIV turns out to not be my cup of tea. Gonna give it an honest shot, though, as a number of my friends that played XI before WoW are gonna try playing this. Never tried Guild Wars.
Currently I mostly want to get into the beta to see if my computer/bad internet can handle it. Worried more about the net connection, tbh. I don't care about the graphics (I mentioned runescape ffs) and am more of a gameplay/explore the world kind of guy. Story is nice to have but not a big deal for me. So far the gameplay doesn't sound overly fulfilling but the world sounds like it should be interesting to run around in.

Game looked pretty awesome and somewhat fun (nothing to kill immediately where I was, like in WoW). I like seeing combat overall but it looks really nice. Sadly my computer can't run it decently but looked very nice! That one chick character is HAWT
If anyone knows where to find stuff to kill immediately, lemme know! I will try it again if I can find stuff within 5minutes of starting to kill

Its really hard to get into this game, the gameplay just feels... off. I'm going to keep trying but it just feels terrible overall, except for the visual appeal.
|
the targeting system really is quite strange... in a bad way. I dono, i think everything should be a bit more intuitive as well.
|
I agree with the posters above. Not feeling this game .
It is very clunky! You could tell they are trying to make the control scheme for a console. No hotkeys, very very clunky mouse movement, no way to interact with objects without going through 3 menus.
The targeting system is horrendus. Tab targeting does not work worth a crap. The whole game just feels really really clunky. The graphics are very good, and some of the skills look pretty kick ass, but I do not see myself getting this game.
Again, this is a few hours into the game impression. I am going to try to keep playing, but it is becoming increasingly harder to continue...

Definitely designed for console play, I've been using a ps2 controller and it's tons better than using a keyboard. Even so, the gameplay is still very awkward. It doesn't feel like a huge disappointment but there's little inconveniences that really add up.
For example, in chat you can only type about a good two sentences at a time. I don't think there's even currently a way to set up your own chat window mode aside from editing chat filters in the two already existing chat windows. Link shells make it way easier to talk to friends though, which is cool, but if you're not on the same link shell you have to type /tell <firstname> <lastname> <msg> every time which is really tedious and annoying. I haven't found any /shortcuts at all, as this is really aimed towards the console I guess.
Finding quests and how to activate them will probably take a good twenty minutes, and locating stuff on the map is like....locating stuff on a map before gps was invented, if you can imagine. Once you actually activate a levequest (it's like a miniquest) you get a little arrow on the minimap that points you in the right direction to the red dots that are your objective, which is pretty awesome. Unfortunately though, you can't jump, nor can you walk up cliff, you can only fall down small parts of cliff. This is annoying because often times your enemies are on a cliff and suddenly your playing a mini-game with yourself trying to find the right way through the cliff maze so you can target and attack a giant mosquito. Luckily this game is pretty big on teleports, so traveling to/from missions/cities is really fast.
The battles aren't too bad, but the targeting is really terrible (Even with a controller it's frustrating trying to target enemies instead of yourself or an ally), on the plus side the animations are interesting and the battles really aren't sloth-like. I played a Marauder and I was able to kill stuff and level pretty quickly. You get some abilities right away that allow you to hit enemies in a cone area, or do critical damage to a certain type of enemy, so it's battles are interesting from the start.
Aside from the massive lag (hopefully due to beta), long loading times, and clunky UI, it's not terrible, but in its current state I'd never pay for it. I hope they do fix it, because in a way more refined state I could see it being really fun, but right now it still feels like it's in a glorified alpha stage with super limited functionality.
One more thing to note, is the music is actually pretty awesome, Uematsu (FFI-IX, and some of X) did the music for this game though, so it's expected I guess. If you can't play it for whatever reason, I honestly dont think you're missing much. If you do end up playing though, use a gamepad of some sort; it will be way more enjoyable.

sounds like the eastern developers still haven't learned, yeah they can make stuff look good but interface design and playability isn't something they are too strong at. this is defenately not a day 1 purchase for me, not gonna make the same mistake as aion :/

Is anyone else getting a timeout error?
To clarify, that's:
13001 The lobby server connection has encountered an error Error Code: 0 Status: 0 TIMEOUT
The Internet (Google search, since I'm not a official "beta tester" and can't access SE's beta tester forums) tells me that it has something to do with heavy congestion, but I'm really loathe to believe that at 5:24AM. I used Nokeboy's method (5th post on page 25) of patching if that's important.
Edit: Never mind. I'm in now, but getting Error Code: 1015 now. Let's see what the Internet says.
Edit: Maybe the servers are down.
Edit: Nope, http://www.ffxiv-status.com/ and http://www.ffxiv-status.com/ are both telling me that they're still up. What the heck.
Edit: God, trying to play this game is like trying to remove your own teeth. :/

ok now im glad i missed the keys thanks guys

I am 100% with the posters above. I was so excited about this game, but quit after doing the first quest. The annoying notification icons that show you can interact with an object then force you to go into 3 different menus just to interact and accept a quest is REALLY annoying. Why cant i just select the NPC or Object with my cursor and click it to activate?
The targeting wasnt an issue for me, but the combat was. I would hit an ability, watch the animation go... then 5 seconds later the mob's HP would drop. Not responsive at all and not made to do anything but stand still and fight. I would agree this probably works better on consoles, but it proves why most developers dont make MMORPGs for consoles. The system is just flawed and it doesnt port well. If this game was designed for the PC then modified to work with consoles instead of the other way around, it would be soooo much better.
I have lost faith in SE and concluded they have no ability to make a game for the PC. Their console mindset from all the previous final fantasy games is too engrained and they just dont want to step outside of their safe zone and try things that are proven to work in other games.

I'm getting pretty annoyed at how much trouble this is to get going. I just found Nokeboy's post about the alternate way to patch which I'll try but JEEBUS. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a game's own patching system to at least be moderately functional if not optimal.
I'm a little discouraged by the complaints about gameplay too. I would really love something non-WoW to play as I haven't been able to maintain an interest in WoW for more than a week or two since maybe 4 months after LK came out. Ugh.

You let me down, FFXIV. You let me down badly.

A lot of the people that hate the game, did you enjoy final fantasy XI too? because I think the final fantasy XI community will generally approve of this game (except for the fatigue system, and possibly the new class system) the inherent latency and unreactiveness is kind of something my brain is desensitized to because it was also in FFXI They also added teleportation which I'm loving right now because it basically cuts out the vast majority of walking between quests
Ive also fallen in love with the new crafting system, i'll be absolutely shocked if botters find a way to fishbot/mine bot this time its slightly less repetitive and with effort you can increase your gain by using proper technique So far the only starting town I've gone through is gridania, strange story line and town set up but I still kinda like its quirks curious what the other cities look like
another thing I think many ffxi fans will disapprove of is the guildleve system it seems to be kind of like a minigame as is very common with square games, but they're necessary to really develop your character and (from what i know) you can only do/hold 8 at a time and then wait for 48 hours for it to reset
the class system might also be disliked by ffxi fans I kind of liked the job/subjob system as you could create a more unique class with the subjob abilities but I'll still give it time
other notable things missing that I have yet to find -auction house in the starting town (perhaps theres one in a big main city like juno from ffxi?) -absence of your own home/room with your own moogle (no gardening? fuck)

Wow thanks alot for the pros and cons i was afraid that this would happen i somehow feared it would end up like Aion everyone was so hyped about that game and when it came out grind grind and people whined about pvp lagg and no raids and not enough instances and too low drops on rare items from bosses. As alot of people pointed out in this thread it seems like this game is not so designed for the pc due to the annoying tab/click. I guess im gonna wait for Tera online but its a korean MMORPG so it means it will be heavy grind ( i dont mind that ) the gfx are nice etc.
Wow i just got open beta gonna try it out and write my pros and cons

I played FFXI a bit due to it being on sale. It was alright but the more I played it, the more I just could not stand it. Spent so fucking long just running to and from places so I'd just end up grinding on mobs. I've been watching some streams of 14, it does look quite nice and I think mining is cool but oh man, I just remembered when the streamer took a boat ride to some city. Took like 8 minutes and then he tried to smith some stuff and fucked up all the time.

We should go back and play Demons Souls
