What do you guys think? Especially ones who've played FFXI. Is this the gateway to cybersex?
FFXI was basically an e-dating MMO when i played it... all these people and their weird ass e-relationships..... so yes i think you're probably on to something

I got into the open beta for this, played for a couple days and I got so frustrated with it I've quit playing. Like another poster said if you like to be efficient with your play time then don't bother with this game. If you like to wander around, puzzle things out and dabble in a lot of different thing then this game will be fun.
The UI is really what killed it for me, as others have said it's 100% geared for consoles/controllers, mouse support feels like an after thought where they realized they were releasing it on a pc and had to include it the day before the beta started. I can handle obscure quests and time sink game play but I can't handle terrible controls and a sloppy non-intuitive interface.

to all the fanboys waving around the "ITS STILL IN BETA, JESUS" argument, i have to say that there is no way that this game will be anywhere near good in only 25 days dont be stupid square, for whatever reason, purposely has not implemented the majority of the features things that are missing: -gear, most of it (in fact probably 90% of it) -personal mog houses -the market system (im told you should be able to search instead of manual clicking bazaars) -most of the synth recipes -the effects of eating food (i have yet to hear of anybody gaining stats from eating) -most of the quests (you can't convince me that the main quest starting at lvl 1 and then restarting at lvl 10 is the only questline) I mean, christ, ive spotted multiple blatant typos in the dialogue not grammar errors, not spelling errors, but typos, like esae for ease so yeah, this is beta thats just a short list, i know there is a lot more missing, for whatever reason (ppl are theorycrafting the reasons on other sites)
anyways, since everybody writes a junk review which is based around the UI and lag (legitimate complaints, I agree) I'm going to attempt to review the early levels 1-10 part of the game (completely ignoring the lag issue)
things i like: + Show Spoiler +-the battle system with TP and stamina an analogy for WoW players: the TP is like rage gained through taking dmg and doing dmg and the stamina is like energy which continues to fill overtime while you continuously use it to use abilities abilities (as far as i know) only require stamina to use while weaponskills require both TP and stamina i see a lot of potential for very well coordinated party play with something similar to skill chains/magic burst (id be shocked if there wasnt, for those who didnt play ffxi http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Magic_Burst)abilities (as far as i know) only require stamina to use while weaponskills require both TP and stamina -the class system this is my favorite part of the game and i personally think its an upgrade from the already great job class system from FFXI the character you make is 100% customizable and unique from other characters you get to put skill points into attributes of your choice like str, dex, vitality, int, mind or piety you also get skill points to place into certain elements to improve the elemental dmg or to improve your elemental resistances you also get to level up any class youd like on your character (like ffxi, just changing jobs) except in ffxi you were only allowed mainjob/subjob at once but now you retain ALL the weaponskills/abilities learned from your other classes example: at level 6 the pugilist gets an ability called "second wind" i can now take that ability and use it with my lancer its still considered a pugilist ability but now i can use it on all my classes If i put them in my action bar the catch: you have a limited number of action points which you gain as you level up and most abilities require at least 3 action points (at lvl 10 i only have 15 action points i think, only enough for 5 abilities/weapon skills to be used at one time) I could go into greater depth on the implications of all the possible customizations (for tanks, off tanks, dps etc etc) but that would take far too long -the crafting I love the the disciplines of the land classes for farming and the synth classes it requires technique and patience, you cant rush through it and expect good results with proper technique you will definitely improve the quality and quantity of your yields -teleportation one of my favorite subtle additions completely reduces the walking distances to get anything done, i fucking love this as that was one of my #1 complaints about ffxi
things i hate: + Show Spoiler +- the fatigue system this is a complete deal breaker for me if they keep this in the game i might still buy the game with hopes that they eventually realize how fuckin terribad awful this idea is my character essentially has leveled 3 classes to lvl 10 (and a lvl 10 craft) because of the complete brick wall I hit with the fatigue system (i had no choice but to explore other classes)
-the lag this is another deal breaker. the lag is atrocious and if it isnt mitigated in any way there is no way i'll be playing this game for a long period of time it basically creates the illusion that the battle system is complete junk, which it isnt i'm only tolerating it now because 1) its beta and 2) i want to learn the game for retail with hopes that it improves currently square has no plans on creating servers based in other countries so apparently they are ignorant to its terrible lag or they are aware and have plans on serious upgrades (or they are aware, dont give a shit, and dont plan on pleasing their international fan base)
-the UI it could be better but it really doesnt bug me that much (besides the lag) get a gamepad if it bothers you that much
note: obviously my review is really really incomplete on the game play itself because i've only gotten a couple classes to lvl 10 so i actually expect the game to pick up soon with party leveling and again at lvl 30ish (like kazham in ffxi, where the strength of the various jobs and the depth of party play began to manifest itself) imagine somebody writing a review on ffxi with only a lvl 10 it would be a terrible review with only having explored 1% of the game so yeah, take the review as a grain of salt

The damn updater stopped at 98% but after reading the comments here I think I will just uninstall it.

when is this supposed to hit ps3??

I just found a pretty hilarious post on ffxivcore.com for anybody actually trying to like the current pretty bad/incomplete/laggy game and explore beta seriously, you may enjoy this:
+ Show Spoiler +To all the whiners out there: you fail at this game. Any flaws this game may have, are just more challenges this game has to offer. More obstacles to overcome. If you can't conquer the laggy UI, or the crashing during Guildleves, then you're doing it wrong. Grind is too much for you? Your job is weak compared to others? Laggy UI: make macros. Avoid archer who has to buy lots of arrows from laggy npc. (Also the arrows make scrolling down take forever.) Avoid selling during prime hours. Wait till after maintenance to sell your trash. Crashing during guildleves: buy better computer and don't turn the camera too fast while doing them. Also luck factor comes into play here. Grind is too much?: Take it slower, no one said you have to reach max level this month. Or if you're hardcore take a vacation from work/school. Gimp job?: Play a better one. Get some healing skills from pug/mau/lancer and level your physical. Then you can switch to your conjurer, or whatever sucky job you want to play. It will be a lot easier then. This action cannot be performed: Disengage, run away, count to 10 then come back. Repeat until you can attack it. There's a solution to every problem. You just have to hang in there until this game is fully ready. SE is working hard to fix these flaws. Depending on how responsible SE is of a company, how much $ they have, and how much effort they put into fixing this game, is just an obstacle to overcome. With time the game will be fixed. Level your characters for what the game will have to offer in a year from now. Thats what I'm doing. If you just don't like how the game mechanics work...well thats how I feel about baseball, but you don't see me going on the official MLB forums to rant do you? no, I just play another game that appeals to me. http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/14731-to-all-the-whiners-out-there/
it never crossed my mind that i was employing so many techniques/tactics to combat the terrible interface and combat lag now that i think about it, there are tons of people doing the same things

Just to illustrate another example, after a battle you have the option to sit to recover your health faster. All well and good, so I moused over to the emote icon and selected sit. Once I was at full hp again I issued a forward move command 'W' to get going again, but evidently you cannot transition from sitting to movement fluidly like I expected. You have to access the emote list again, scroll down to 'stand', click it, wait a little to account for the lag, and then you finally stand up and are good to go again.
I don't think even an apologist could call that 'hardcore' with a straight face, that's just bad design. It's little things like that that really detract from the experience, multitudes upon multitudes of these little things add up. Like I said, the game is simply not polished, perhaps SE will iron all this out in the future, perhaps.
I will submit though that the character models and emotes are lovely, but that's about all I came to like.

or just type /sit

If you want to be technical, yes, /sit works, however /stand does not. My point still stands, in that you pretty much have an interface which is fighting you all the way.

IMO the process of leveling your character is one of the most important aspects of any MMO. Early in vanilla WoW the game was very fun for me because leveling was something unique I'd have never experienced before.
So what is the leveling design of this game? I played FFXI like 6 years ago up to ~ lvl 45 and while the first 10 levels are obtainable solo, once you reach that first desert zone (Valk-something Dunes) you must be in a party to have any success in leveling. This became the leveling process: putting up your LFG flag in the main city or zone and hoping to get into a leveling group. Obviously this has flaws, but a well formed group could level quite fast. From what I remember there were little quests and the majority of the game (as I played it) revolved around these leveling parties.
Will FFXIV have this same philosophy? From my very limited experience in the beta so far, leveling involves getting a bunch of -leve quests from an NPC in the city, going to some camp outside, then killing some monsters. All the leveling quests so far are just carbon copies of one another and the process is very boring.
While FFXI's leveling experience was flawed. For instance, you sometimes had to literally wait hours to get into a party due to playing a class whose party role was not in demand at the time. I haven't played FFXI in years so if that's changed since then great.
So what should leveling be like in FFXIV? Leveling parties ala FFXI? A dynamic quest system similar to WoW? The -leve system that's currently in beta?

This game is not value for money and I don't think anyone should buy it. Its completely underdeveloped. All the time I was installing I was waiting for it to mess up, they didn't even fix installation bugs, the patch download is a joke also. The game lags, interface is pathetic, combat and targetting is O.K. Graphics nice but mouse lag is stupid. No one should pay for this piece of shit.

I've tested this since phase 1 and this game truly sucks. The only reason I continued to test it was because apperently we were testing some old client which I now belive is just mumbo jumbo. The game is really really crap.

I enjoy the Final Fantasy series; however, I just can not get into this game at all. Oh well, I'll just wait for WoW Cataclysm...

I played a lot of xi, but things about xiv just confuse me. They took things that were good in xi and removed them completely. While shitting all over the bad aspects, and kept those in. Choose Lancer, Mash 1, win game.

Would be just one example. In xi, you just move, and you automatically stand. Theres no reason they removed so many things xi

It doesn't matter if they add "features", the gameplay is terrible. Adding gear or synth recipes doesn't change that.
I wasn't really in to FFXI but it held my interest much longer than this. Apart from the graphics and sound, it is just so shoddy. Very little help to get you started let alone telling you what things mean. I mean just simple things like being able to scroll with the map, why can't I do that? It would have helped me a fucking lot : [

you can scroll with the map, it's ijkl

Seems like only hardcore Final Fantasy fans can find any redeeming qualities to this game, which is a very bad sign
