The book was good, at least better, and actually delivered the message wayyy better. The movie was just too cheesy. I totally get the message, but it was way too obvious in-your-face. Also, the plot was just weird sometimes, it would jump all over the place.
If you want to make a movie with this sort of message at least be a little more subtle about it, and do it in a good way, not with cheesy lines and bad acting (maybe it was supposed to be bad acting though?).
Pretty much in the first 5 minutes the movie just gives away the whole message (war/communism/facism = bad), no thinking required, i didnt like that.

Saw Memento recently! A very very good movie

It takes you down a road of predictable but then makes you doubt it when you see something seemingly contradictory. The acting was great too, especially Michael Douglas' performance.

It saddens me to see this movie reduced to a comedy. It is actually a very good film which presents you with stupid humour and seemingly pointless fight with the bugs while being something completely opposite. It is understandable that the meaning of this movie will be lost on most people since it is presented in this unlikely form. It is a movie about dystopian future (society divided into citizens and not-citizens), horrors of war, totalitarian governments and regimes, the low value of human life etc. etc. The other two are also good, but are getting even worse notes for being the same cheesy thing but with lower budget (which translates directly into the quality of special effects which are meaningless in this movies anyway). Pity, because each of those movies touches a very delicate and important subjects. Back on topic: ![[image loading]](http://www.filmofilia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/The-Girl-with-the-Dragon-Tattoo_poster-535x792.jpg) The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo The Girl Who Played With Fire The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' NestSuperb series. It's been a while since I've seen such a good mystery movie (ok, it wasn't all that long before I've seen Ghost Writer and Brick but movies of such quality are rare and few apart). I have no idea why is Hollywood trying to remake a movie that's 2 years old and superbly done (they've even got the same actress...).
Agreed on starship troopers, the over the top style is simply the way that director does things (and I personally find it really entertaining) He also did robocop, about the failure of a society that glorifies violence, in the same style. I really like both movies. Sometimes I wonder what Heinlein really mean with the book though, I mean I always read it as satire or dystopian but then I learned that someone's written an actual parody on it meaning that at least one person took it seriously. Also sometimes on TL (:p ) I have seen references to the book as if it described a utopian vision rather than a dystopian one so things might not be as clear cut as I used to think.
Regarding the girl with the dragon tatoo series (I still wonder how they came up with that translation) I like the films and the books. The "message" if you can call it that is conveyed much stronger in the books though. As a sidenote, I feel sorry for the Alfredssons' lol, they must really hate hollywood. The brother of the director who made the girl with the dragon tatoo made the movie Let the Right One In which I love. It too got remade by americans almost immediately. I actually think they started filming less than a year after its release lol.

What did you think? Godfather is a masterpiece and I enjoy it every time I see it. The 3rd? Not so much, but it's hard to hold a candle to the first.

Whilst it's slightly less thoughtful than most of the films bandied around here, I watched mr popper's penuins on friday and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It's not big or clever, but it's just bloody good fun. Not one to watch when you want something deep, but if you're in a "how to train your dragon" kinda mood, it's well worth it.

Another good movie that everyone I think will enjoy, possibly even pleasantly surprised at how well it's done is Crazy Stupid Love. I wrote about it here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/jgi6m/crazy_stupid_love_incredible_movie_go_see_it/
Also managed to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Overall I thought the movie's tempo felt forced and shaky and despite Franco's good acting could not bring it home for me. It was a decent movie and entertaining, even showing homage to the original and the Tim Burton + Marky Mark adaptation. I also cringed when I saw Malfoy say Heston's timeless line. A 6/10 from me.

Uh what? How does one of the better animated films of 2010, a non-Pixar film no less, get lumped in with a fairly forgettable comedy? I mean at least compare it to another recent comedy, but comparing it apples to oranges the way you did, it's a bit baffling.
@Grimjaw-
Yeah I've seen Crazy Stupid Love - definitely one of the better comedies this year...but comedy is highly subjective to each person. One of my friends hated it (um wtf), so who knows really. Agree with the pacing/tempo of Apes. I felt that with the long development of Act 1 and 2, Act 3 rolled by a bit too quickly. Perhaps if it had maintained the same quality as the first two acts, Apes would have been better.

Nazi architecture, nazi uniforms, references to Leni Riefenstahl propaganda films etc.
Overall I didnt like the movie though. Had many weaknesses, one of them that the nazi satire was (obviously) conveyed quite badly. And I didnt like the fighting scenes either, looked just too ridiculous with the plastic guns that they didnt even aim with.

I watched the following two movies on watch instantly Netflix last night. If you have an account with them and havent seen either I recommend checking them out!
The Machinist One of those Movies that is an absolute mind fuck, while at the same time being absurdly cerebral. As usual Christian Bale becomes the role he plays in a very convincing fashion. It's difficult to really say anything particular about the film without revealing key elements but i'll try and explain how the film works. Basically its about a machinist that works in a factory, whom hasn't slept in the past year. With each plot development a question or two is answered, and about ten more are raised in its place. Where this particular film differs from its kin is despite the confusion throughout the movie, it all makes concrete sense at the end. A must watch for those that prefer their films to be more like a puzzle of reason, and less like pure eye candy.
Searching for Bobby Fischer I chose this one because I was doing some research on Bobby Fischer out of self interest a few weeks ago. I didnt read the synopsis but assumed It was based on his young life. Once the first scene opened with "Josh" the seven year old protagonist, in a monologue recollecting Bobby Fischer's triumph in obtaining his World Championship title, I realized immediately that I've seen this movie several times as a child, but I didnt remember it at all. So I continued watching.
Essentially the film is about a kid who has a rare interest in chess for kids his age. Like Bobby, he possesses a natural talent for the game and picks it up easily because of how much fun it is. However after choking at a tournament the game appears less and less fun to Josh and he even considers quitting despite the big tournament he is expected to play on the horizon. Ultimately he is reminded why he picked up the game to begin with, and decides to keep with it.
Both of these movies beckoned a real sense of understanding from me as I watched them unfold. I dont want to spoild The Machinist for anyone whom hasn't seen it but I think its one of those universal messages that all people with a pulse can commiserate with. And the second move, Searching For Bobby Fischer, really speaks to my competitive drive as an individual. Clearly from the connection so easily made by my mind between starcraft 2 and chess. However more generally i'd call it a charming reminder of why you would ever care about anything.

![[image loading]](http://wellmedicated.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/yojimbo.jpg) Yojimbo - Awesome, one of my favorite Kurosawa films for sure. A ronin comes across a town with two crime lords, and while gaining the trust of both them, schemes to take them both out. Toshiro Mifune is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors, I plan on looking into other movies he has done that haven't had Kurosawa directing them.
![[image loading]](http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Gqr7KXxOL.jpg) Sanjuro - Sequel to Yojimbo. Great follow-up, not much more to say about it.
![[image loading]](http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/24/MPW-12111) Conan The Barbarian - Liked it alot, epic as fuck and a good number of classic arnie quotes.

I just recently saw "The Man From Nowhere":

I'm not that into korean cinema but this one was pretty good in my opinion. I think you could compare it to "Taken". I thought Taken was overrated for the most part. The action is great and the pace keeps you into it but the characters were so stupid that I didn't care for any of them. Also the ending was so ridiculous. Meet a popstar and the world is great again? Come on...
"The Man From Nowhere" has its weaknesses. Some characters are a little over-drawn and seem like caricatures at times and the movie is trying to create emotions in an obvious way but it works and most people wouldn't even notice i guess.
It is a little slower paced than Taken with a little more time for character development on all sides but still without compromise and with great action scenes. Some shots are really impressive. Particularly the window jump and the knife fight at the end are very well done.
Can't remember seeing a movie quite like this in a very long time. I'd give it a 8.5/10

For a obviously low budget, this movie is absolutely brilliant. One of my all time favourites.

Starship Troopers was an excellent film. For those of you who still don't get what its all about its a complete Satire of Propaganda and the U.S. War on Terror!
"The campy anti-war satire about a race from a distant, desert land, who out of nowhere strikes a civilian target in a way we didn't think was possible, leading to heavy-handed patriotic propaganda, and a headlong rush into a war with a poorly thought-out strategy that results in a quagmire. You don't have to agree with the message to get that it's clearly a satirical send-up of the War on Terror."

Oh and before I forget DO NOT watch any of the sequels for starship troopers. They completely throw away the entire idea of the Satire and Propaganda use in war just to try to make a crappy low budget film to make a quick buck.
