* Little touches like mentioning the gold was safely in King's Landing, mentioning the need to gather the grain while near Highgarden, and talking about the stragglers in the Lannister line is exactly the sort of context the first episodes of this season were missing and this episode is way way better for including them in finally. * I liked the family reunion; it was awkward as it should be, they basically last met as children and have had no common experience since then (except hardship). On top of that you have Bran who's losing his self identity and Arya who's committed horrible atrocities she doesn't want to own up to so it really fit well I thought. * Missandei = Spy thing gains more plausibility this episode despite being a terrible idea and direction for the character so it's really odd what's going on there with the way the dialogue weaves around. It's hard to get upset over the implication when it may all still be in our head though. It's possibly they're setting up for someone to be a spy later on or otherwise internal conflict and want to have multiple possible suspects (Missandei, Tyrion, Varys). * Littlefinger gains more interest this episode with the whole dagger stunt and his interest in Arya's fighting skills (or wariness about them). Good to have the character be doing something for his own agenda again. * The battle made sense this time! Both armies at the start of the episode were about equal distance from where the battle took place, Jaime's army was burdened with gold & gain and drawn out due to the process of collecting the grain, the way the road back to King's Landing is a plausible enough place for Dany to get a good drop on Jaime. * The Iron Bank is more interesting again. Are they being truthful to Cersei, or was this all just their way of getting back their owed debt? Initially it looked like the Iron Bank was going to just dump money into Cersei in an effort to get their original investment back which seemed like a terrible idea, but taking a repayment then investing a bit again seems more reasonable. Even more reasonable is just taking the money and backing Dany (or no one) though, but we'll see what happens when the Golden Company arrives. It seems more likely they'll be on Cersei's side as she needs them to continuing being a source of conflict. * Jaime drowning was kind of cliche/silly but in a way that works still I think. He's almost obviously not dead (why save him from the Dragon fire then), but the fake drowning seems ok because this probably both symbolically marks a change in his character (having just lost a good chunk of his army and a possible reunion with Tyrion) and/or it gives him a way out of the battle on top of that. They could have just had him escaping in the chaos after being saved by Bronn/Dickon (probably Bronn) and that would have been fine too. * There's a lot left to be intrigued by now; we know some of the broad strokes (Dany+John obviously), but there's a lot of unknown stuff that's starting to be lead into (what's Theon going to do? Arya? Littlefinger?) that things can be exciting even if they are mundane. I would argue Arya actually showing up to Winterfel was kind of a surprising twist (in not being a twist I guess) so things like that are nice to have. --------- Also Arya trained her swordsmanship a lot while training to be a Faceless Man which is how she's reasonably good (or you could buy into the highly improbable Arya isn't Arya theory). She's also going more all out than Brianne was at first, and I think it's plausible to think that Brianne is inexperienced fighting against the Essoes style of combat which would also make it more difficult for her.

This episode, for me, was 9.5/10 I'll say why. -Arya FINALLY arrives in Winterfell -Stark reunion. Something I always dream of , while reading the books and watchin the series -Bran giving that dagger to Arya, definitely means something . I mean if Bran "sees" everything he knows Arya is an assassin/faceless man -Arya training with Brienne was amazing, considering that Brienne is probably one of the best in westeros atm. I had flashbacks of Arya and Syrio and all her training in Braavos. -That battle was so good, Jaime and Bronn (who doesnt like Bronn? hes a BAMF) vs Dorthrakis + Dany and Drogon. I dont know about you but I've been waiting to see dragons in action since I started reading the books/watching the series -Tyrion mixed feelings, watching the Lanisters and his brother getting rekt - and more...

I think it's gratuitous for a purpose though, I'm strongly imagining a future plot point revolving around the humanity of using the dragons in combat and that either cowing people in fear or hardening them against Dany because of her perceived brutality.

I just expected something more epic. It lacked that something when two rather big armies clash with each other.

It'd be really hard to do that sort of tie in though and have it believable since Missandei started so humbly that there's not much room there. On top of that she'd also be betraying/condemning Greyworm to death or increasing his risk of death in battle. It's weird that the show is throwing out a lot of hints about Dany having a future loyalty problem, but I don't know how they do that since it would be really out of character for all her advisors. The only way maybe is if Dany's brutality in war starts to weaken that loyalty.

1. It's reasonably obvious to everyone what Littlefinger's play is, right? Lots of people were acting like he had no plan, but right now it's sure looking like Jon agrees to bend the knee and Sansa says "Fuck that" and becomes Queen of the North with Littlefinger at her side. The lords of the North have had their patience tested a few too many times where Sansa was in favor of the correct answer and Jon was in favor of some idealistic nonsense. If/when he gives up on an independent North, they'll just say, fine, you don't want to be our King, so she'll be our Queen. 2. Training fights in TV/Movies are always bullshit by convention. They never wear masks, always go full speed, don't seriously try to hit each other, go for knockdown instead of actual hits, and sometimes use sharp (!) weapons while doing all this. It's artistic convention that they are both not getting injured and somehow improving doing this kind of thing. But viewers don't want to see Syrio teaching Arya good footwork or having her do parry/riposte drills. 3. Arya isn't better than Brienne. She does decently in the fight, and catches Brienne by surprise initially, but Brienne commands the later portion of the fight. Still, Arya has a lot to learn from training with her (though Brienne has relatively little to learn against Arya's style). 4. I gave up on GOT having military accuracy when I saw the jousting armor in S1E2. 5. That said, the logistics aren't as insane as everyone is pretending. Yes, Tyrion/Dany are making significant mistakes out of underestimating their opponents and overestimating their advantage. They have a substantial superiority and expect to be able to win in several places at once, which is hardly unreasonable. Their transport fleet was vast, and transporting the Tyrell/Dorne/Unsullied by sea posed no logistical challenge. Hitting Casterly Rock was a basically good move, reducing the bases Jaime's army could operate out of. And, several defeats in, their first victory establishes them in a good position. Jaime's forces are bottled up in King's Landing. Any outlying Lannister forces are scattered and without good position. It's unclear what the deal is now with the Unsullied, but if Casterly Rock can be evacuated by land, they can easily burn it and move inland, moping up straggling Lannister forces and maybe picking up some allies. Cersei commands the sea, but she cannot ferry her troops out of King's Landing without risking dragonfire, and Targaryen troops now command the inland area. Cersei must rely on further cleverness to have a chance of success. (Were I her advisor, I'd try to bait the dragons into attacking a fleet full of bolt-throwers pretending to be a transport fleet. But even this is a risky gambit.) On July 25 2017 14:51 KwarK wrote: I feel like dragons are probably pretty fireproof. If they weren't then they'd set themselves on fire all the time. And while I think Missandei is completely genuine and has been all the time, it's fair to speculate on what Melisandre's future role is.

If/when he gives up on an independent North, they'll just say, fine, you don't want to be our King, so she'll be our Queen. That's an interesting theory, but I wonder exactly how plausible it is. The north seems pretty on board the Night King train and Jon is poised to deliver Dragonglass and make good on his decision. Then as tales of the Dragon's brutality spreads I can't imagine the North wants to suffer such a brutal war again. I think the guy who asked if Missandei was a Cersei spy was actually talking about Melisandre? I don't think that's right either, but from the 'I noticed it from when she was talking to Varys', that sounds like what the question is about? Maybe, but that doesn't make much sense either since the Cersei camp seems pretty anti-Rhallor.

I was expecting every episode to get longer and longer, but this one only had 45 minutes ![]() Also I think it would've been really cool if Bronn was the first Dragonslayer, but since it was Drogon (I think) she was riding, it was clear that he would survive. Surely one or two of the other dragons will die sooner or later though.
