It's pretty boring (not a bad thing for what it's about) but I think even if the average person could get past that the thing that would probably put them off is the fact that it's painfully dated politically and the characters are pretty predictable. Having a world in 2030 still basically following Cold War era politics really annoyed me. the politics are not dated, you haven't read the second two books. The politics are the most relevant there are! Fair enough, I didnt read the last two. I might read them if I have the time. I still think the politics of the first book, even just the first 1/4th of the book, would probably be enough for some people to stop reading it. Then again I did read the book like 10 years ago so maybe I'm remembering it wrong... Yeah, unfortunately the beginning of the first book doesn't really do the series justice. It's very old-school astrophysics type SF. I think this is actually intentional and part of the aesthetic unity of the novel (novel = all 3 books), but I could see how it might turn some people off at the beginning. Think about the novel as recapitulating in part the history of SF and the history of thinking about the future ("futuriography", lol) as part of the novel's structure - this involves beginning with a cold war paradigm, which then becomes greatly complicated as the story progresses. edit: that is, as you read the novel, you watch the new politics grow out of the old politics, and you couldn't do that if he didn't start with the old politics. the science is the same way, as you watch astrophysics->geology->biology->ecology

Guess I'll have to go through this thread again to find some inspiration. Or does anyone have any tips? ![]() Not sure if you've found a new book yet or not but since you like Dresden Files you may like the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. It's the same genre, urban fantasy, about a 2100 year old druid living in modern day Tempe, Arizona. Has a lot of mythology from all the different religions of the world and the premise of the first book is that the Celtic god of love wants his ass dead. ![]() Would also like to note that i have downloaded the NPR top 100 sci-fi/fantasy novels, i am sort of "new" to books, in that ive only started really putting a lot of time into reading this year, so i thought this was a good place to start. There is a great flow chart, which is helping me decide what next to read. Hope this helps other noobs like myself to the wonderful world of sci fi and fantasy! + Show Spoiler + https://dl.boxcloud.com/bc/1/626755c27ddf2b1e2d18423674838425/JolueqOGpciD6dgYhecNBoVpYxkvmYe1ZLheZor6BF4DUBIelMQTkFwYIys3nIibNIIEHUp447tBZLaXDzIbNQ,,/7eb5f5e38a6412116efdd4678890b3d3/

I haven't read many translated books, so it was an entirely new experience for me. If anyone is interested, I have published one of my short stories as a free PDF. It's a light-hearted locked room murder mystery. I thought the story wasn't too bad there were no plot holes and it was structured well but you made a few novice errors. You use to many adjectives and your dialogue is very poorly constructed. Lose all the attributive phrases in the dialogue. The dialogue should describe how something is said you don't need to inform the reader how something was said. If you feel like you do then rewrite your dialogue. It makes it apparent that your a novice.

I have re-read this multiple times, could you clarify? Edit: Aha! I understand now. I'll keep an eye out for an excess of over-description in the attribution. Thanks a bunch ![]() ![]() This baby just arrived in this post. I have a lot of work to do. I'm hoping I can fall in love with it as much as A Song of Ice and Fire.

Ya your overly descriptive in the attributive. Its not hard to fix. I also enjoy writing and the greatest thing I ever did to enhance my own abilities was to buy On Writing by Stephen King. I have read many books on writing and On Writing is without a doubt the greatest book ever written on the subject of creative writing. It is also a badass memoir.

![]() Aldous Huxley's tour de force, Brave New World is a darkly satiric vision of a "utopian" future—where humans are genetically bred and pharmaceutically anesthetized to passively serve a ruling order. A powerful work of speculative fiction that has enthralled and terrified readers for generations, it remains remarkably relevant to this day as both a warning to be heeded as we head into tomorrow and as thought-provoking, satisfying entertainment.

Definitely enjoying it so far. I'm a little over halfway through. I'm reluctant to describe it because it has a fair bit of suspense, and I don't want to spoil anything for any of you who decide to pick it up. I'll edit this with more complete thoughts when I finish.

I'd like to know if it's worth picking up again. Lots of people don't like the first book and then fall in love with the seies at book 2. I on the otherhand loved the first book and still love them up to book 7 (which is where I am at the moment). I would absolutely recommend the series to anyone who loves high-fantasy. They are incredible books, the best fantasy I've read. Read the foreword by the author in Gardens of the Moon to have him sum it up. There's a turning point, that once you reach, you'll know if you're hooked or not. I don't normally like to tell people to grind out a book but I really want to here.
