Distinguishing continents actually gets rather complicated when one looks into, and there really isn't a singular, satisfactory definition of a continent. The usefulness of a definition is related to ones purposes. In this case of competitive play in Dota 2, Europe and Asia may actually be a useful distinction, and one in which Russians are a part of Europe. Why? The great majority of the Russian population is from west of the boundary that traditionally separates Europe and Asia, both in terms of current population and in terms of the heritage of these people. Russian players have a habit of playing on teams which also have other nationals from places like Ukraine and Belarus, which are only more thoroughly western. Only once in a blue moon is there a Kazakh, from a place where the population lives east of the boundary. When we actually look at the teams that from areas that are undeniably the Asian part of Eurasia, we find that they are all from the extreme east of the land mass, places like China, Malaysia, Philippines, and South Korea. Yes, that may be in Eurasia, but there is no circumstance under which anyone ever thought of that as Europe, and anyone from a place like Moscow or St. Petersburg is presumably both geographically closer and more culturally similar to, say, a German than they are to a Korean (by a long shot). So basically, if the day comes when Dota 2 has a significant number of high level teams from places like the Arabian peninsula or the central Asian steppes (Next.kz is just one team, and rather irrelevant), it would be a reasonable time to talk about Eurasia. For the time being, there's no need for confusion. Dota's Russian teams are European teams. | ||
