NEW ORLEANS — A judge presided, and the beaming couple embraced teary-eyed well-wishers when it was over. It wasn't a wedding, but it brought Viet Anh Vo and Heather Pham a bit closer to marriage.
Vo is 32. He's been a Louisiana resident since he was a baby and a U.S. citizen since he was 8. But he was born in an Indonesian refugee camp after his parents fled Vietnam. His lack of a birth certificate led to his being denied a marriage license under a state law that took effect last yea
U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle of New Orleans blocked enforcement of that law Wednesday. And the legislation's sponsor later said she's drafting changes to make sure foreign-born, legal residents can get a waiver to the birth certificate requirement.
Lemelle granted Vo's request for a preliminary injunction, saying the birth certificate requirement violates the equal protection rights of foreign-born U.S. citizens, as well as the fundamental right to marry.
"It treats him differently from citizens born in the United States or its territories," the judge said.
I mean, why not? Look at the movement behind universal healthcare for the elections. It's the right move to make if the dems want to win back seats.

yeah. publics behind it pretty heavily. I just hope higher ups listen. One of the reasons I like franken so much. He's been a supporter his entire career. (don't see him running in 2020 cause he's up for reelection unfortunately). Also interestingly Mark Cuban supports single payer and a constitutional amendment making healthcare a fundamental right. Also I'd rather have Takano as a senator than Feinstein. I'm not sure she's actually done anything (Lieu as a senator while hilarious would probably be counterproductive.)
We can't forget what "the Democrats" were trying to say about UHC and fighting against Republicans before Trump won though.
Or how Sanders calls for UHC were characterized by Chelsea Clinton:
"Sen. Sanders wants to dismantle Obamacare, dismantle the CHIP program, dismantle Medicare, and dismantle private insurance," Clinton said in New Hampshire Jan. 12. "I don't want to empower Republican governors to take away Medicaid, to take away health insurance for low-income and middle-income working Americans. And I think very much that's what Sen. Sanders' plan would do."
Ham fisted attempt to stick it to the GOP who couldn't' work it out. Was he alive during the those dumpster fire nominations the Democrats had to suffer through? He put Ben Carson in charge of HUD. He isn't doing shit with the Dems in the House.

I think you're giveing trump too much credit when you say that he has a plan with this and isn't just randomly floundering around trying to make something happen.

The worst part is that really do have no idea if he has bad plans or literally no idea what is happening.
So now it's back to the usual "lynch Paul Ryan" I'd assume?
So Trump wants Dems to work with him on healthcare... people are talking about getting rid of Paul Ryan to replace him with someone that's more in line with what people imagined the great healthcare under Trump would be. Emphasize on imagine since we obviously don't know what the masterplan was to begin with
Has anyone told them yet that if they replace him with someone way more hardline Dems are only going to be less likely to work with them?

Really? Looks pretty obvious he has no idea from where I'm sitting. His 'ultimatum', "who knew healthcare could be so complex", breaking the one china policy and then supporting it later. The disconnect between his spoke people and his own actions hours later.

Looks like flailing around without a clue to me.
I could believe that the one china situation could have been an idea form obama on his way out in a way to keep the status quo but put china on the back foot to start his administration.
This just reeks of a lack of any real way forward on health care that doesn't bring us to the left.
I think Trump is clueless and has no idea. I just don't know if that is aimless or directed toward something. That is all I am saying.
People calling to get rid of Paul Ryan need to remind themselves how he got that job in the first place. No one wants to be Speaker of the House right now. It means leading the hottest section of the Dumpster Fire Party. It is like being head of the senate, except you have no power and a large section of the chamber is super fucking pissed at you.
what about the freedom caucus guys? Are they not willing to be Speaker of the House or is it that noone is willing to make one of them speaker of the house? I know about the story how Paul Ryan ended up with the job but I don't exactly know the details of how you really decide on who does it. Aka, was it really the only one willing to do it or was it the only one willing to do the job out of the subset of people who'd be able to get confirmed or something like that?

freedom caucus doesn't have the numbers to have their guy as speaker unless they compromise which isn't something they do or anyone trusts them to do.

The Majority party votes on the Speaker of the House. The minority party votes on the Minority Leader. Both parties have members put their names forward and then each party votes on its own time before the session of congress. But there needs to be people who want the job. Given the deeply dysfunctional state of the Republican party in the House, it is very hard to find people to lead it. Specifically when the Freedom Caucus decides to fight over petty shit like the debt ceiling(the goverment agreeing to keep paying debts the congress created with previous spending) and blow up bills.
This is what happens when you make your entire focus not doing anything for 6 years and then suddenly have to work. You find out that the people that got elected by saying "we will get rid of the black man's health care law" don't know shit about governing.

It would be akin to making a FN/AfD/UKIP representative the leader of the legislature. Freedom Caucus/Tea Party are kind of like the US's far-right and their fellow Republicans don't really like them all that much either.
One of the big differences is that the Tea Party has been in congress for like 6 years and have actively cultivated other GOP members distaste for them. Let alone the Democrats. They have gone out of their way to fuck over their own party. The entire senate hates Ted Cruz, cannot fucking stand him. If the Republicans had not taken the hard line of not working with the Democrats on ANYTHING for 6 years, the Tea Party would be powerless. All their power is based on the fact that the party line holds. When that ends, they will just be jokes.
So they should have power for at least another 2-4 years.
