we're not talking most well known athlete in europe/north america. (I think jordan could probably end up beating pele/beckham then, because everyone in north america knows him and almost everyone in europe knows him while the amount of people in north america who don't know of pele/beckham is probably larger. ) but europe/north america makes up a very small portion of the *world's* population. why would some 10 year old african kid who never watched tv however has played football for his entire life know of jordan? football is the only sport played worldwide..

Behind soccer basketball would be the #2 most played sport. Italy, France, Lithuania, Yugoslavia, Russia all have very strong basketball teams and they are only a fraction of the countries in europe that play basketball. It is popular through many countries in Africa, particularly during the dominant period of the Hakeen Olajuwon led Houston Rockets (he was born and grew up in Nigeria). With Yao Ming being the first Chinese national in the NBA, baketball is growing at an exponential rate in Asia. It is already extremely popular in nations like Korea and Japan. To say soccer is the only worldwide game is not true. -there are 96 rugby playing nations -Soccer barely rates a mention in India (world's 2nd biggest pop^) I could keep ranting, but my point is, Jordan IS one of the greatest athletes of all time with Pele and Ali. The three are inseparable, because they are more than just athletes in a sport, they ARE the sport.

#1 Pele # 2-x Ali John McEnroe Sampras Maradona Maurice Green Carl Lewis Michael Jordan Michael Johnson etc. The topic is not about who is/were the "best" athlete/sportman, but who is the "best known"

Ali and Jordan have to be at least NEAR the top of the list. There's no way they are too far out of contention, if one is not in the #1 spot.

I guess outside of America, people don't care about reading comprehension either. The question is who is the most known athlete. People can't choose to not care about Michael Jordan without knowing that he exists.. and if they know that he exists, then their vote counts toward him. Thus by making that statement and not putting Jordan at the top of your list, you already submit yourself and your opinion to stupidity. Michael Jordan is extremely well-known amongst the most populous countries in the world. Basketball is popular in many countries and is closely associated with Jordan. It'd also be hard to believe that any country where Nike is popular has gone without seeing the Jordan symbol. By knowing that exists, you also know Jordan exists, as it is just another representation of the man himself like his name. That being said I think between Ali, Pele, and Jordan it could not be easily distinguished without concrete support.

In the 1992 olympics the dream team was the main attraction of the entire games, and Jordan the most recognizable figure in it. I recall reading somewhere that Jordan was the person most people would recognize when walking down a street. Ali/Pele are quite old, I doubt most people would recognize them if they saw them in a picture(out of uniform^^ ) But Jordan is definitely one of the most famous athletes ever. Everyone knows him even if they dont care one whit about basketball, and whoever watched the 1992 olympics does care about basketball even if he didnt before...

Get this, if a person doesnt care for Michael Jordan and/or basketball, hes most likely not going to mention him when discussing about big athlete, with his friends for once. On the contrary the talk about Pele is obviously more common, when soccer is much more popular worldwide. The title says "Most Well Known Athlete of All Time?" and i can insure you that, outside of US people dont know much more about Jordan, than that he is/was a great basketball player and that he was in a movie. Also, Jordan is fairly new compared to Ali and Pele.
