The only thing said was that Jordan has his name all over a ton of major brands, all over the world. Not to mention the dream team, which was probably seen by every person on earth who owned a TV in the early 90's. Jordan would have to be in the top three, if he's not the number one.

The basketball scene everywhere else in the world is really really miniscule compared to the soccer scene. People play soccer all over the world. Guaranteed everyone who loves soccer has heard of Maradona or Beckham. So I would definitely go with either of them.

and jordan is probably top 5. but I'd place pele, beckham (and no not because of his skill, but because he's pretty much a popstar. ) , maradona and ali above him. when you guys (americans) are naming basketball players other than jordan, hockey players, baseball players, etc, it's because you fail to realize all those sports are tiny compared to football outside north america. I know 2 guys who have ever played on a basketball team. I know hundreds who have played on a football team. and europe is with very few exceptions like that. children in brazil (or south america in general) who play football all day long will most definitely have heard of pele and maradona. people who pay ANY attention to sports in asia will know who beckham is, because when he recently visited several asian countries he got A LOT of attention. in fact many people who don't pay any attention to sports will know who he is. people who don't play basketball and don't have a tv (that's a WHOLE lot of people, way more than who don't play football and don't have a tv) might actually not know who michael jordan is. I knew who pele was before I was 6 years old. in fact I knew about hundreds of football players before I had ever heard of jordan. and if you go outside north america, that's how things are, although yes jordan *is* very famous, and I can easily put him in top 5 most well known athletes of all time. but not top 1. now that I got the final word in this (and it's not like it's a fruitful debate anyway), im closing it. ![]()
