Hi I started playing SC in 1998. I played a lot of multiplayer on battlenet's EAST server from like 1999 through 2009. This was my handle/username back then as well Metallicaz01.
I remember other players like Spifo, Class~Clown, Blood-Rooster, and so many other friends who I cannot remember anymore.
I am trying to get back into brood war multiplayer and had a few questions.
Please help an old geezer out I'd appreciate it!
So after googling Starcraft forum it seems clear that this TL.net is the best and most active starcraft forum correct? At least for English language speakers? I am sure there are Korean forums too but I don't know that language.
Also how/where is the best way to play brood war online? Simply the Official battlenet server? Is it even active?
I heard something about ICCup and Fish? I have no experience with stuff like that at all.
Are there highly active non-battlenet servers where people still play multiplayer brood wars?
I am interested in maps like Big Game Hunters, Hunters, Lost Temple, and also some of those special fun maps like Marine Special Forces, Hydra Defense, stuff like that too.
Wish you all the best and I really hope someone from 20 years ago remember's me from the East server, and hope I can find a way to start playing multiplayer BW again, safely (without catching a PC virus).
Oh, also, is map hacking still an issue? It never really bothered me that much if someone can see my map, but the hack where they cause you to disconnect as you are about to beat them was always upsetting.

BGH team games are still active on US West and Europe servers (US East is a ghost town). Nobody plays Lost Temple anymore. I've read that special fun UMS maps are hard to find, but sometimes you can find them during peak hours. Maybe there's a UMS scene somewhere, idk.
Regarding 1v1, the scene is very active and healthy on official battlenet servers, using the Ladder feature of SC remastered. There's also a great 1v1 and competitive 2v2 scene on shieldbattery.net. iCCup and Fish are no longer relevant. The skill level is generally quite high, few newbs to be found playing 1v1, as almost everybody playing this game has been doing it forever. For newbs, recommend Coach Pupil League (CPL) to get matched up with similar skill players and access to coaching. Ladder is generally tough and discouraging for people relearning the game.
Map hacking can still be an issue, but I don't think its common. I don't think disconnect hack is a big concern anymore.

Thank you. So basically log into the official battlenet multiplayer server, West coast, and see what's available.
Hopefully they still do 3v3 BGH too, that was my jam.

@fgt4w Hey thanks again. I installed the shieldbattery program. So do I open the normal official battlenet SC BW Remastered program 1st, and then launch shield battery?
I am on the shieldbattery app, I don't see how to join games for multiplayer. Do I have to join a channel and then see who is active and online in the channel?
On bnet the way it worked was there was just a big long list of games that people had created to see if random people would join, and the list would update periodically.
If I am looking in the wrong place forgive me.

Ok I just played a game on battlenet west server. seems pretty active thanks for the advice. still trying to figure out shieldbattery but i'm sure i'll get it. thanks again
