try to find someone who doesn't know who Ali is ? oh and you can start with women. the list is as simple as Ali by far Pele Jordan Sampras / Schumacher / Kasparov think of someone who doesn't know who these 6 guys are ... Breeze mentioned Sergei Bubka, he could be there too with Maradona and also Carl Lewis, but neither of them are at least close as the ones I mentioned, because they aren't known in some regions of our beautiful planet.

I'd have to say that soccer is probably the only sport you can truely call yourselves world champion at.. there isn't another sport i can think of where every country has the opportunity to field a team. Although I barely watch any soccer at all, I do understand that it is unquestionably the most popular sport... which is why I do wonder about Ali / Pele / Jordan, because I know what the other two have accomplished, but I know nothing of Pele... simply a name. So here's my thoughts, on what I know Most well known athlete of all time: Ali Most Popular athlete: Pele? Most decorated athlete: Jordan? I put the question marks because I figure Pele's popularity is why he's considered the top, and jordan's achievemants fall short to noone really:/ By the way, I in no way am saying Pele isn't good. I'm saying he's a very popular athlete by name these days. I in no way have any idea what he's accomplished ![]()

for all the charisma ali brought to boxing and the skill that pele brought to the game it is really impossible to any of these men to accomplish in their games what Tiger Woods has accomplished in golf. And he's not even 25 yet.

He helped Brazil win 3 world cups, scored more goals than any other player ever (+1200). Plus, he gave soccer a different aproach, he spread it worldwide, to a lot of countries (including the states, where he played at Cosmos) and is always working in order to help soccer become a more worldwide sport. In and off court, he was a gentlemen, very humble and quiet, and a world hero. for those who don't know, Muhammad Aliis perhaps the greatest boxer of all time. he was indeed a master, but he became famous for his activist rights as going to black muslim religion. he refused to go to Vietnam and was taken his throne on what ppl believe were his best years. after serving sentence, he came back to box and regain his title (twice). after retiring Ali became a worldwide respected voice, one of his doings was that he served as intermediate to set free some hostages in a hostage crisis during cold war Iran-USA. Kasparov i mean who doesn't know who kasparov is ? though bobby fischer was very famous too and probably better than him, Kasparov took chess to another level. he was the one to develop an enormous campain so ppl saw chess as a sport and chessplayers as athletes. has faced computers trice, the entire world once on the internet, and has been world champion for almost 20 years. schumacher 6 times f1 champion. need to say more ? pete sampras perhaps greatest tennis player of all time. has all tennis records. 14 grand slams, 6 years #1, most weeks as #1... he dominated tennis in a decade that was supposed to be open wided and impossible to be dominated by 1 player michael jordan greatest basketball player ever, no doubt. as same as pele, took basketball to another level, the marketing worldwide spread. 6 times mvp, 6 times champion, etc etc... so many records frankly i don't think there's anyone else that fits on this list. though some possible close candidates: maradona nadia comanecci mark spitz carl lewis sergei bubka tiger woods (may become in some years) bobby fischer ayrton senna o.j. simpson gee i think there's no one else

and i don't think beckham or schumacher are less known to older generations. i mean they are on tv all the time, how could someone not know them. if you're not into sports (as the majority of ppl) you prolly forgot who ali or pele were even if you knew them. still one thing to say: i am really interested in sports and follow all kind of leagues reaching from curling over snooker, k-1 and f1 to soccer but i got no clue who all these baseball and basketball players are. the only ones i know are m. jordan and shaq and i heard the name babe ruth in movies. so take all of them off the list coz they are only know in small regions of the world.
