a lot of people know that baseball exists, and when they think of baseball they think "babe ruth". regardless of if he was the best ever, people who dont know the sport just think of him.

so he is up there. but he's obviously not 1

actually, I didn't know babe ruth was a baseball player until like 6 months ago. didn't know if he was a football or a baseball player that is. and im pretty certain if "what sport did babe ruth play" was a question in the norwegian who wants to be a millionaire, quite a lot of people would get it wrong.

ronaldo? i dunno, could be beckham but some of the poorer continents might not get as much news of premier leauge/spanish league but know a lot about the world cups. Whereas europe/america all know about ronaldo anyway cause they watch spanish league/world cup. And ronaldo performs better than beckham in the world cups.

oh and agassi maybe. even tho soccers more popular than tennis, hes just been around for so damn long, and still in top 5.

No doubt: Muhammad Ali by far.

so much he did achieve in both sports and in his time as a personality (vietnam war, charisma, freed hostages during embassy crisis in Iran 1980)

2nd Pele (most american and canadiens don't know him, Ali is a legend and his name is all around the world).

Jordan would come to a 3rd but very far away from Pele, along with Pete Sampras and even Gary Kasparov too.

Schumacher will become a legend when he retires, but right now he's not very famous in America

Ruth is not known at all neither in eurupe nor asia... nobody cares about baseball there, same goes for Maradona but for America. Beckham is just a pop star, he'll dissapear in some years, and all the other guys you've named are just local sportheroes.
Boxer will be in the US on the 16th - perhaps to give advice to South Korean President Roh, who is on state visit to the US this week, on how to handle any surprise tank pushes by North Koreans

"Most well known athlete of all time?" ... hmm after giving it some thought that would be a different answer in different countries. Someone from Puerto Rico would probably list baseball greats, while someone from brazil would mention soccer (football )

Edit: Muhammid Ali or Micheal Jordan would probably be most likely to transcend all countires.

On basic knowledge I think Ali is more known than any other athlete, even Michael Jordan. I myself know OF Pele and Beckham but don't even know what teams they play for or anything like that. Although im pretty sure Ali would win in a poll, soccer players do have a large following
Perhaps not right now, but later we'll know truly how players like Pele and Beckham really stack up to Ali's ever-lasting fame.

As I said I don't watch much football, but my friend who came here from Persia played for team canada under 18, so he's pretty into what goes on and I do get to see the odd game on his huge fucking tv :O

In that order. The top 3 are debateable tho. Personally i think Jordan should be #1. The guy is just wow.

i think Sw)rif hit it on the had perfectly. Jordan and Ali would probably be the most common answer from a non-american controlled country.

are you guys naming american stars retarded or something? considering basketball, baseball and american football are sports mainly played in usa, while real football is played through the entire world, it's obviously going to be a football player.

and even if we're talking all time, I'd guess beckham. but pele is also incredibly famous.

here in europe we know about people like jordan and we've heard of a couple other basket stars and we know on average perhaps 3-5 american football players/baseball players. but seriously, go to asia, africa or south america and poll people on whom they've heard of and have the options michael jordan, ali, beckham, pele, babe ruth, wayne gretzky and some american football player (I don't even know who's the most famous player through all time and I've paid a lot more attention to american sports than the average norwegian. )

if you think beckham or pele would not win a worldwide poll then yeah, I really gotta wonder what's going on inside your head.

and the reason why I think beckham would probably beat pele is that he recently went on a promote-himself tour across asia, and there is now a whole lot more media around the world than it was back when pele was the best. some of the newer football nations might not have heard as much of the old stars as they have of the new stars, and back in 1970, asian countries weren't as into football as they are now.

to quote steven patrick morrissey

"America is not the world."

I tell you what... Find someone that has never heard of Ali.

You don't want it to be an American (because you are so envious of our greatness), but the most famous athlete surely is Ali. And yes, he was the most famous in Africa and China too.

I think it's either Ayrton Senna or Maradona... when koreans ask me where I am from, I reply "Argentina" and a lot of times they say "maradona"... even though I don't like him, a LOT of people know him and more so now that he is in the latest news around the world with his drug addiction thing.

Drone, Ali is incredibly famous in Africa. When he fought George Forman in Zaire, to quote Ali himself: "The Rumble in the Jungle was a fight that made the whole country more conscious. I wanted to establish a relationship between American blacks and Africans. All the time I was there, I'd travel to the jungles, places where there was no radio or television, and people would come up to me, and I could touch them."

Practically the world was watching that fight.

Ali back in the 70s was HUGE. He is a household name and every single athlete in the world has heard of him. Beckam is someone relatively new yet I would give you the benefit of the doubt because he is becoming more and more popular. Especially if everyone knows him in Asia, lots of people there.
