Hotel/flights are booked. Was a shame though, Kingkosi and I are going, and I had to search around for a hotel that had a check in age of 18 (as opposed to 21). Ended up spending $100 more for flight/hotel. Staying at Americas Best Inns Anaheim over Extended Stay Anaheim Convention Center (that's what I believe was recommended by a few people in this thread, but their check in age is 21). It's still relatively close though, only 1 mile away from the convention center.

If he doesn't want to go then that's his choice. If he wants to go after class is done then that's his choice. Stop giving him shit for it. And like Alventenie said, there are better ways to present it. Bill, the point is to build excitement. Am I going to fly internationally to go to some convention? Probably not, but if there's a bit of hype and excitement around it then I might. I believe more than a few people got convinced to go to BWWI because of the hype, and as more people go, the more fun everyone has. That's the point that should be gotten across. I don't care what life lessons people have to learn to go, I'm more caught up in trying to show them the hype that's surrounding the event and getting them excited. If, after that, someone can't decide between Blizzcon and school, I don't want to convince them to go because I probably don't want them there anyways.

In university, I learned that if I missed class frequently, then I would have a much weaker understanding of the material and get lower marks. But if I missed an isolated day, it made no difference. Of course it would take me a little longer to learn the material on my own than if I had attended class, but as long as I put in the extra time to learn it, I was fine. Now, personally I think it's admirable that some of you guys are concerned about missing class. Fuck what Chill, Haji, etc. say: more people should have that attitude. It's good because you don't want to skip class on an impulse (like "OMG MUST GO TO BLIZZCON!!1") or due to immature peer pressure (*leers at Chill and Haji*) and then later realize it was a dumb thing to do. That said, once you get over the impulsive, emotional part, you can sit down and think whether it's really worth it to skip class for X, keeping in mind that you can miss one day without affecting your marks. My advice is to buy the ticket. Worst case scenario: you change your mind or you find out you have a big test on that day and the teacher won't let you take it early: you sell the ticket and optionally make a profit from it. Normal case scenario: you finish homework ahead of time so that your weekend is free; you ask your teachers to give you the material for Friday in-advance, if possible (or just catch up after Blizzcon); you go to Blizzcon and have an incredible time. This isn't like skipping school to play WoW or iCCup: this is a once-a-year event, and I guarantee it will be far more fun than spending your weekend playing SCBW at home. The social experience alone will be unprecedented. You'll have to work a little bit harder before/after Blizzcon, but it'll be worth it. Lastly, if you're still not convinced, then talk to one of your teachers about it, one whom you really respect. I can almost guarantee that they skipped their fair share of classes when they were in high school, and probably for much more trivial reasons than this, too. For this same reason, you shouldn't feel embarassed asking them for the day's material ahead of time with the intention to skip class. He can't sell the ticket and make money. You have to pick up the tickets with the credit card you bought them and a matching ID. He is a sophomore. Its not that big of a deal to skip 1 day of school.

It's not so much of an issue with me wanting to go, obviously I really want to go - but with all these complications it'll just be impossible for it to just happen. Why would I not want to go? Of course if I could decide between the two I would decide Blizzcon, but the fact is, it's not my decision to make. It's my parents' decision, and I finally mustered up the guts to ask them on the phone and they said it was unacceptable - there's nothing I can do to that short of disobeying them (which I would never do). On top of that, my brother is too lazy to buy the tickets in the first place, and doesn't even want to buy them because he's not even sure he wants to even go at all. Missing a day of school is a pretty big deal for me - although for my brother when he was in high school it was a common occurence, I'm not like him in the least.

What the fuck? You seriously want to shun someone just because school is a high priority for them?! The nicest, friendliest guys I have met have all had school as a high priority. Of course now we're old enough to know when to make that trade, but I doubt I'm the only one who would've seriously hesitated about it when I was younger. Which also means I take this statement personally. But even if I didn't, it's still deplorable.

Superiorwolf is what, like 15-16 probably and Asian... you aren't asian Chill so you don't really understand their culture all to well, but if he's got traditional asian parents, missing a day of school, especially for a video game convention is a BIG no-no. I can also guarantee they will not be pleased AT ALL about him traveling with some random guys he vaguely knows through the internet, if he doesn't go with his brother. Blizzcon is going to be lots of fun, and I would advise anybody who is willing and able to go, to make the journey and attend, but if its too much hassle, and school is a priority for you and you don't want to miss it... then no big deal. Although in defense of the people advocating "fuck school, come to Blizzcon" I'll say this: Superiorwolf is probably in high school, I can almost guarantee there is no such thing as "missing 1 day of school = lower your GPA" ... any school I can think of (my HS for example, which was a really high ranked public school in LA) allows multiple absences before it affects you; mine allowed 6, and on the 7th you get an F in the class. Since you don't miss school ever, I can guarantee that 1 day will not affect your grades or anything, it's just about getting parental approval. Anyways, Chill you are really just sounding like one of those jocks in hs who would make fun of the nerds for playing magic the gathering, or actually studying for their classes... except in this case you are equally as nerdy... let's not forget that (anybody who would travel some kind of distance to watch people play video games and oogle over Koreans who are famous for sitting in a room in front of a compute 13 hours a day is a fucking nerd - myself included) Just lighten up.

You do realize, at that age, all it takes is a strong conscience that says "missing school = very bad" to make a person afraid to miss school for anything? And they'll probably change their mind later, like Superiorwolf did. (Or maybe he always wanted to go, but knew his parents would probably prohibit it, and so he got misunderstood.) I don't see what problem you'd have with someone just because their conscience is well-developed.
