Maybe it's the rose-tinted glasses but it seems like this community is becoming a lot meaner recently. For example, in the recent "Abusive Parents" blog a kid is posting about how he is upset he has no social life, no social skills, and is not in a good place right now. Then he talks about how his parents are always pushing him past his limits, and removing any enjoyment he could get from his life. As soon as he mentions his Asian parents it seems like all of the people who were raised by Asian parents come out of the wood work and are like "Yeah, maybe you were chased around a table by your dad trying to beat you for 10 minutes, but I had it worse". Well, so what? The person posting the blog is looking for advice and empathy and the commenters devolve it into an Asian penis showing competition about who had the more abusive parents, like it's something to be proud of.

And that's just one of the threads recently that has turned into a shit-on-OP fest. So, before you post a rude comment like that, remember there is someone who wrote the OP in the first place, and would like a positive post. And then don't post. Just don't.

And chill.

EDIT: On a side note, I really miss MetorSkunk. That dude was positive as balls.

The expectation that you should be able to post sob stories online and receive only pity and positive condolences is beyond wishful thinking.

1/5 because OP falsly assumes the community was at some point anything other than negative.

How long have you been here? Every time we get an asian parent complaint blog its exactly like this. I think we had people telling someone to suck it up and work harder at school when their parents were actually physically beating them one time. Its been this way forever.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

It's always like that though. Everyone's view and definition of "abusive parents" comes out and they always feel the need to compare each other on who had it worse (who endured the most, who suffered, etc.).

It's like a pity-party of dick-waving.

Probably a runoff from the perceived state of the game. In general, the community is typically negative though.

Think about the recent influx of new members to TL (mostly from SC2, but LoL/Dota2 as well). By and large, the ages TL members is probably fairly close to bimodal, with one peak corresponding to the average BW fan and one peak corresponding to the average SC2 fan (at least 5 years apart, probably more?). Certainly not everyone falls into one of those two groups; I myself was a BW fan first but didn't join TL and start posting here until relatively recently, but on average I would be surprised if that wasn't true. That's a small gap in the larger scheme of things, but there's a huge maturity gap between ages 15-20 and ages 25+. Blogs about high school problems are going to resonate with some posters and be, at best, amusing to others. Which of those two posters is more likely to take the time to respond?

Also, mtdew's post speaks truth.

Also also, that "Abusive Parents" blog is perhaps not the best example, as it was truly ridiculous. I cannot fathom how anyone would read something titled "Abusive Parents" which contains the line "They didn't even buy me an iPhone" and respond with empathy. I'm often snarkier than is perhaps called for, but come on. Really?

First thing I did was check when he joined. 2010. Lol... TL's become FAR and away a much more care-bear community now than it used to be. Back in the old days, TL had much more sophisticated trolls, most people knew each other, and everyone was merciless in dissecting a post and showing all its innards of stupidity.

And yeah, this is a community with a large % of Asians. Weakness and mediocrity are not treated with compassion.

Really, Samsung? Are you going to back that up at all? From what I've seen it was much more polite(probably because everyone knew each other).

My profile says 2010. I've been here a while longer.

Iranon - I read that part as him being upset he never got any birthday gifts or anything. It was pretty entitled sounding but it was one line in the post that everyone jumped on, ignoring the rest of it and the entire point of the blog.

You don't remember when Rekrul was modding and Chill posted actively in blogs section? Fanatacism, CM, moltkewarding, Mani even. The old TL vets were way more belligerent when it came to someone they thought was stupid. Nowadays, the mods are mostly impersonal and cleave to site policy rather than individual biases. The kids just whine about balance. There's hardly anywhere near as much venomous hatred between fans of rival teams, just in general TL is much more benign than how it used to be. Sure, there was more chumminess between members who knew each other, but when it came to general reactions to idiocy, TL was a much more hostile place in the past.

There is several legal definition of abusive parenting in as many countries as there is on earth. So while it is pointless to compare one's experience with another, it is certainly not wrong to say (and it was the case in the aforementioned blog post) to point out that this mention of abusive is severely exaggerated.

why? why is it too much to hope for a helping hand if you're down on the ground, and instead get told "suck it up, other people have it worse in life"? people are allowed to ask for help, even if it's only mental support

You're being dramatic here without taking the context of each topics asking for help. Topics like "I have abusive parents because I don't have an iPhone" deserves the "suck it up response". Topics like this: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=397919 do indeed deserve mental support responses which TL has thoroughly provided.

Really, the community is slightly skewed toward negativity in line with the rest of the anonymous Internet, but when someone really needs support or help, the community is there to help out.

Not sure if that's satire or serious. Cannot tell. If its serious (which i doubt) its retarded. If its satire, not the best I've seen. Feels so serious.

You also have to be aware of the demographic age of the population that is catered on TL. Different blogs will evoke variable responses from anywhere from the ages of 13-30+ years of age. That in itself is an overlap in generations, which plays a large role in shaping opinions of the people in their generational era

The community took a huge nosedive since SC2 came out. I've gone on the automated ban list multiple times just to see pages of post 2010 accounts before you can find someone 2009 and prior with a ban. I don't know what it is or why suddenly a new game brings a bunch of garbage, but it did and I guess I've just gotten used to it.

I agree about expecting positive from the Internet. And it depends on tone. If it sounds like botching, people will jump on you. If it sounds like a thoughtful post people are more likely to respond positively.

And on the bad/abusive parents note, I'm pretty sure I win (not that I care, I just tel people this to shut them up when they are whining) This guy is my father.
