As everyone already mentioned it's just common decency to ask before a pause.
Personally if someone pauses in a game without asking i'll 100% resume straight away, as usually it's someone being BM when they have already lost or trying to throw you off your game. If they simply say "pp" or "one sec plz" etc I have no problem whatsoever with it and i'll say np and wait.
I've called people BM for not saying anything before they pause, ESPECIALLY if it's during a battle. I consider that completely unnecessary, is it really so urgent you can't wait 10 seconds? Just seems like someone trying to get a cheap edge.

oddly enough every time someone unpaused while I went to do something has lost the game.
|
I don't think if the person is a douche that he will let you unpause, however always explain why you're pausing and I often have chats with the people I'm playin during the beginning stages so that's most likely why I've never faced someone so bm as to not allowing my to pause.

Random pauses are annoying and can throw people off their game. I am not one to unpause, but I do find it rude in that I can set aside some time to get my IRL stuff sorted for a session of ladder games, and my opponant doesn't have the foresight to do the same. Now that's commitment.
hmm compared to "OMG LET ME PAIUSE I DUN WANNA LOOSE!!!1111one ?"
leave the game, ask the guy for a rematch if it means that much to you.
i really hate having to sit their like a muppet waiting for someone to talk on the phone "hiiiiii daaaaarlin, what r u doin? mee? noooooothin... just playing a little starcraft y'know. i r amazing at starcraft, in fact i r so amazing that im just about to beat some noob right now... but noooo i'm talking to you... jeese i really enjoy talking more than playing starcraft... okay seeya.. love you... love you more... no, me more... no me... no me... no me... isnt it funny how we love eachother so much? blahblahblahblah..."
i feel like quitting the game and going outside if the game is paused for longer than 30 seconds.
if there was a minigame or something you could do while paused it would be great, but no, it's basically like the game has severed your spinal cord. at least it should open up starjeweled or something ffs.

If someone asks me if they can pause before they do it, giving a brief explanation I will wait for 5 minutes at least before unpausing.
If they just randomly pause I ask them why and if they dont answer in 10 seconds I will unpause.
So ask first, if they refuse to let you have afew minutes I think its BM really.

occasionally i pause for 10-30 seconds to talk to someone IRL real quick or deal with food or dog doing some shit or something. i always give a reason for pausing and assure them i'll be back quick, and idc if people pause on me as long as they give an explanation, and people who unpause without giving people a chance are assholes regardless of the reason.
having read the first 2 pages, LOL @ these people who feel they are completely justified in turbo-unpausing like they have better things to do than wait for their opponent. it's especially funny if one tries to convince themselves that they're somehow saving themselves a significant amount of time by turbo-unpausing to force a win.
truth is, by turbo-unpausing, yes, you get the free win if they really went afk, but the time you spend getting that takes away from the quality game that you're likely less than 5 minutes away from having if you would just exhibit a minimal amount of patience. it usually takes you almost that much time to end the game from there, except now you're playing a shitty game, and you're also pissing someone off who probably needs to do something and otherwise feels bad that they need to inconvenience you. the only real benefit is +1-2 minutes of your time, and a free win. don't convince yourself you aren't turbo-unpausing for a free-win.
it's one thing if they just pause and randomly leave with no explanation. it's another if you unpause before letting them give one. it's another if you don't care whether they have one, that just makes you a huge douche bag and i hope you get bored of this game and move on soon so you stop setting a poor example of manners.

I'd rather wait 1 or 2 minutes and continue with a nice game, then searching for an opponent again and playing the first few minutes of a match.

i love it when somenoe pauses. i just say, sure. then unpause when they are gone, and when they come back, they are dead.
also, i ask if i can pause cause i gotta use the bathroom. then i unpause randomly and attack and hopefully catch them off gaurd.

You should report them to blizzard, eventually they will be banned and we can get them out the system. That way you will always have nice people that do what you ask of them

in a public FPS game, do you expect the entire server to sit and wait while you take a dump or whatever? what's the difference between pub fps and pub rts ?
if you have an urgent call or whatever, just leave the damn game. it's only points.
i occasionally have the TV on in the background, if i hear an interesting scene on two and a half men am i allowed to pause the game to watch it for a moment ?
pausing is dumb. the pause feature is only there if the 'other' player is okay with it. if the other player is not okay, leave the game or you're a bm kiddo.

Ya dude I ignore phone calls but sometimes the door goes and it's a package or the guy to check the gas meter, or a hardware malfunction...sometimes things are out of your control.

I have a funny replay of some guy who pauses. Then he goes "ready?" I say yes. He hits the wrong button. Yes, the surrender button.
That's karma!

If the FPS was 1v1, yes I would expect someone to wait 1 minute if I really need to pause. Any longer than that is uncool, but to be perfectly frank 1 minute of your time is worth less to me than the points I win for beating you.

I generally pause if my opponent just asks if he may pause and everything is fine. If he cheeses and bm´d me before and doesnt ask the nthe chance of me unpausing increases drastically
|
I can wait for someone to pause and do what they need to do, but please do expect an all-in coming afterwards.

all of that means more than a few points on a video game though, would you agree?

You sir are a sad little man, but unfortunately every community has asshats like this guy. Lucky they are not very common.
I would say most of the starcraft community are more then willing to give you a second within reason. Generally you only see people like the above poster in the lower leagues though as most gamers would value playing a good game over a stupid win like that
