This really is a standard scenario, so you just have to learn the proper strategy and stick to it. I think your best bet is to just sit there and take the bullshit coming at you, in one ear and out the other. Emotional parents don't run on logic, so there's clearly no point in arguing against them.
I would think that you're pretty much a slam dunk for merced. Are you not looking at other schools like UCLA or Cal?
I kinda have this feeling too (OP is Asian descent)
This might add fuel to the fire, but maybe you could show them that "Too Asian?" article. There's too much expectation from the parents for the kids, so any little thing can set them off.
edit: ah, too slow. but maybe the second part is interesting

What should I spend $5,500 on lol. I've refereed a lot and I have a good amount of money built up. Dunno what to spend it on. I guess I could get some epic steelseries stuff but... If you're looking for advice on what luxuries you should buy from people on the internet, I'd say you need to a get a reality check.
Honestly, why would you spend $5,500 on something that's unnecessary AND something you have no desire for? Just throwing money around?
Save, young people don't do this enough, just spend spend spend, and then wonder why they are in debt...

If you have a 4.3 GPA your going to a joke school.

Wow man, your 'rents needs to take it easy on you. It's better to have less pressure and shit. What's she trying to do, make you one day SNAP!?
|
4.3 GPA? What year are you and how many APs?
I got through IB/AP 4.2 weighted I think (?), didn't try my hardest (haaaa) but hey I'm at UCLA so it can't be too bad . College is tougher though, if you figure that APs are just intro material.

Your parents just want the best for you, they're just awfully strict. My parents were so strict about my Internet access. Just remember, your parents love you and want to see you succeed more than anything. They can come off as harsh in the years of youth, but down the line you'll come to understand the things they do.
You might actually not get into Merced because you GPA is too high lol. Colleges have been known on occasion to reject people overqualified for the school But I digress.
Teenagers misunderstand parents too often. Your parents were your age at one time in the past, and although society has changed people have not. They know more than you'd think ;D

I swear you get asked whether you're Asian in every blog.
You'll definitely do very well. If I could give you what I believed to be my best advice, I'd tell you to stick it out/work just as you're doing, to try your best not to argue to/lash back at your parents, and to smile during your first day at Berk as you look back on all of this and realize that you've made it.
Also, I agree 100% with dudeman :>

Typical problem with parents is that "getting to college" sets you for life, but in reality, it's what you do during your time at college and beyond. Pretty much everyone that wants to get in college, gets into college. Being awesome gamers we are, we have quick wit and cleverness that allows us to get 90%+ on pretty much every test without studying much in high school. Essays and projects are different stories, but essentially, little effort = high marks in high school.
Once you're in college, and especially a good one at that, things change...
Anyways, I'm pretty sure you'll get into whatever system you want. I'm Canadian (and I didn't apply to US undergrad schools) so I'm not sure exactly, but those numbers do look decent.
Oh, and I get about 5 hours of sleep per day... and 12+ hours between Saturday and Sunday. Sort of like a weekly recharge routine. I don't usually fall asleep in lectures, although I do need coffee for the boring ones.

I really just don't understand....High school ISN'T hard. NOR is it important. Test scores are what get you into college, that and having your math done before you are a senior. (as in take the highest math offered at your school junior year)
But whats even worse is a parent putting worth into highschool grades >.<
Are you parents really just that fucking dumb? Did THEY go to college?
High school is such a joke it's just pointless. Over half the shit I learned in my 12 years of schooling before college was either half true or straight up false information. School doesn't teach anything anymore, even more so anything of actual use.
and for the record, I'm going to Colorado School of Mines. It's kinda a big deal. I honestly did pretty shitty in highschool grade wise (mostly cause I missed well over 30 days of school xD) and now I'm going to probably the best hard science school in the western half of the US, and pretty high up there on the world scale anyway.

His mom graduated from UCSF and his dad got a 1600 on the "old" SAT.
LOL

wtf 4.3? Are you kidding me?
You would get a huge scolarship if you applied to merced... They would literally PAY you to go there...

|
i think your parents should be jailed.. seriously what they do is called abuse
|
As for internet providers you should look into a Company called Clear. They are launching in the San Fran area later this month. They offer great speeds unlimited for unmatched prices.
|
Also, if you are in anyway interested in engineering or geologic sciences, School of Mines would be one of the best choices you could make. Seriously good school for anything hard science related.
But then again thats ALL that they offer here. It's engineering, math, chemistry, drilling/petroleum, geology, and some other shit. Only non science degree is econ O.o
But ya, seriously look at Mines if you are into the science area.
