NOTE: I'm a junior, Merced would be my like last choice backup, and my mom was merely insulting me
SO I'm taking AP Chem. SO it's the hardest class offered at my school. SO it was the hardest test of the year. SO the teacher said 50+% was pretty damn good SO I got a B-
Evidently as a combination of these factors I found my mom yelling at me saying I would never get into UC merced. Oops, wait. I already have a higher GPA than is required, not including this semester, and I currently ahve a 4.3 GPA, compared to the 3.92 from last year.
I was a bit perturbed at this stupid assertion so posted on facebook "Evidently I might be privileged enough to get into UC Merced" Heck, I didn't even say my mom said it.
So her response? Yell at me and turn off the internet. Then procede to tell me to sit down, shut up, and listen to every reason why I'm a failure.
Among these two reasons is LACK of sleep. Sure, I admit, I don't get quite enough sleep as I should, but I went to bed at 11:20 last night. I even didn't do some homework in order to do so. But I missed my alarm, and was barely on time to school. So I'm a failure. Although I'm sure my parents won't care, I'm curious how much you guys sleep. I normally get 7-8 hours.
Poll: How much sleep do you get7 (39) 28% 6 (37) 26% 8 (23) 16% 9+ (17) 12% 5 (12) 9% 4 (7) 5% 3 (4) 3% 1 (1) 1% 2 (1) 1% 141 total votes Your vote: How much sleep do you get (Vote): 1 (Vote): 2 (Vote): 3 (Vote): 4 (Vote): 5 (Vote): 6 (Vote): 7 (Vote): 8 (Vote): 9+
So my mom told me to stay, yelled at me. Said I shouldn't be like my high school dropout cousin, said if I did that she'd kick me out of the house. I was more than willing to comply with that. I don't foresee myself dropping out. She then said "Oh, you think your'e an expert at everything, a psychologist a sleep..." and I rashly said. "It doesn't take an expert to know you're mentally ill." Sure, it's stupid, but I was really pissed at that point.
So then the tables turned and she told me to get the fuck out of the house.
So I went to the highschool where my friends were in band, talked to them, went home with one of them, used unsecured wifi to post on facebook, and returned home. (WOOT $50 iPod touch ftw!) Upon returning they shunned me and made me go to my room. But never fear, I am posting this blog from an itouch LOL
I don't know what I want for Christmas, and so I figured a nice mouse/keyboard would be nice. However, another idea popped into my head. My dad was complaining about shitty internet speeds. I was wondering if I could persuade him into letting us get better internet. Right now we are on 768kbps shit. If I can't persuade him I guess I could ask for it? Anyways,my two options are AT&T (www.att.com/dsl) and Comcast www.comcast.com/highspeedinternet/ . I'm not sure if there are other options in the SF bay area...
Which one would be best/which one is more reasonably priced? If I could get something that is middle of the road decent price I'd be so happy
Also do you guys have any way that I could use the poll currently on TL to persuade them that 768 kbps is indeed sorta... slow?

I am so glad our system doesnt give a shit about gpa and puts alot on the exam grades D: though i can obviously see where the downfall with that is, im lucky im an exam person.

Well, I have a 2310 SAT, at least, so I do well wtih testing. I mean, I'll get into at least one damn decent school. Good shot at berkeley tbh.
|
yeah we have, well had, when i was in that stage a set of exams in 2 year intervals, AS and A levels, As was the first year exams worth something like 30%, but it fluctuated between the subjects, and the A levels made up the rest. You could doss off something terrible and still do fine so long as you got any coursework modules done. The system is pretty much built for those who can do exams, i mean theoretically you could do no homework, no participation and so long as you aced the exams your golden.
|
come on, 2310 SATs, of course you'll get into UC Merced and yes, you should apply to Berkeley, why not Stanford too?
fios > cable > dsl
people hate comcast, but I've used it a lot and they are fine

How much is fios and who is the provider.

You act like a kid because they treat you like a kid. They treat you like a kid because you act like a kid. A vicious cycle, but I think it's you who needs to break it :O
Don't act like you can burn bridges with your parents. It's a really shitty attitude.

www.verizon.com/fios
you'll have to check if its available in your area
its also more expensive than cable. if you're not uploading much, it might not be worth it

Don't act like you can burn bridges with your parents. It's a really shitty attitude. Yeah. Normally I try and be accommodating. This was a really bad decision making on my part.
What do you mean more specifically about not burning bridges? What specifically SHOULD I do?
Also, if I wanted to stream, what kind of upload would I need?

your parents dont really have any redeemable qualities, do they? either way, good luck with upgrading your internet speed and not going insane under the tyranny of deluded fools.
|
I think you are being modest and silly at the same time. 2310 is higher than what my valedictorian got on his sat. Sounds like you got major Asian parents. Lol. Never happy with any performance less than perfect. Anyways get comcast
|
What do you mean more specifically about not burning bridges? What specifically SHOULD I do? I find that staring at tile designs made it absurdly easy to tune out parent rage sessions.
Also, you should work on becoming a sincere liar. Sometimes should 'admit' that your parents were correct, while not believing any of it, because its the most pragmatic solution at the time.

Am I correct in guessing that you are asian?
This really is a standard scenario, so you just have to learn the proper strategy and stick to it. I think your best bet is to just sit there and take the bullshit coming at you, in one ear and out the other. Emotional parents don't run on logic, so there's clearly no point in arguing against them.
I would think that you're pretty much a slam dunk for merced. Are you not looking at other schools like UCLA or Cal?
|
I'm taking AP chem too ><. I get around 6-7 hours on average depending on how much I procrastinate, what day of the week it is (since I go to school an hour earlier monday - wed), and how much homework/how many tests I have the next day.
I'm in orange county and ATT is pretty bad >< it likes to shut off. Its not bad for its price though (like 20$ a month at the lowest here) Idk how it is in bay area.

Don't act like you can burn bridges with your parents. It's a really shitty attitude. Nah your parents sound like dicks who expect too much of you. Burn away. I did it and our relationship sucked for a couple years but now my parents finally understand that I need my freedom and respect my autonomy. If I had just put up with their shit the whole time then I would still be putting up with their shit now.
But yeah, I'm white. If you're asian your parents might straight up disown you.
edit: I was only able to burn my bridges because I graduated from high school early, moved out and got a full-time job when I was 16. So I had 2 years to live on my own with no parental input required before going to college. I ignored their phone calls, angry messages, and threats, and was financially independent. I made it very clear that if they continued to be the way that they were that I was just never going to speak to them again. And I wouldn't have if they didn't come around. You probably won't be able to do this since supporting yourself while still attending high school would be very difficult. So maybe you should just suck it up
Basically as long as you are living under their roof you have to put up with their shit. Get your own place and everything changes.

I thought the same thing but unfortunately it's not true. I got a 2300 SAT but my GPA was only a 3.86 weighted (after taking a total of 9 AP classes) and I was only accepted to one school. UC Berkeley was my first choice and I was not accepted. Sad but true. However this may have something to do with my decision to wait for 2 years after graduating and the admissions people not understanding that I graduated early. I'll never know.

UC Merced is like the bottom UC school and they even need to appeal to people to get them to go there lol.
Get comcast too, but only if there's a promotion, else you're gonna be paying like $60 a month instead of $20-$30.
|
UC Merced is a cakewalk with what you got. If you have a 4.3 GPA, you're gonna stomp the admissions.
>.>
Your mom is just too paranoid I guess. With a G.P.A. like yours, you can easily compete with those wanting to get into LA and Berkeley.
|
you have no chance of getting into Berkeley with a B- on your chem test. i'm sorry but that just isn't going to happen. snap into reality and start checking out some state schools you failure

Then they yell at me for not following through with these bullshit comments. 3) Hell yes. I think my mom was just trying to insult me. I'm looking at UCLA/Cal/Davis/privates.

ALSO...
What should I spend $5,500 on lol. I've refereed a lot and I have a good amount of money built up. Dunno what to spend it on. I guess I could get some epic steelseries stuff but...
