When reading long controversial threads I usually just skip to people with an icon or different colored names. The cesspool in between is just a blur under my scroll wheel. Its my poor-man's "blue tracker" like the blizzard forums.
That being said, I think there needs to be a few more elites. People that get a cool icon or name color just for quality thoughtful posting. It would be a nice way to separate the wheat from the chaff in those 50 page KeSPA or LAN play threads
(and yes, I'm chaff under that definition, don't get upset lol)

Or you can just read posts. TL's layout is amazing, it facilitates reading a lot of posts, which isn't necessarily true on other forums (like a phpBB forum or something, due to all the clutter). Besides that, there are individuals who get a Star for their contributions.
But people have their expertise in different areas. Once you read more and are familiar with recurring posters, you naturally figure out who's a good poster and who's just a troll. If poker threads popped up on TL I would be able to provide a lot of sound advice/information, but if I posted in a thread about say, Greece's debt, of which I have absolutely no idea about, you really couldn't apply my expertise in 1 field to another.

If nobody read the posts that came from people who didn't have a star, fancy icon, or different-coloured name then we'd never be able to get any new people that will one day obtain the aforementioned items. Then there are people like Kwark and Harem who choose to keep their unit icon, and those are people you don't want to be brushing over when reading threads.

I'm more likely to read a post by a red/blue/iconned name, but what's more important is the length of the post, how well it's written or who actually wrote it. I've learned that post count is generally not indicative of posting quality AT ALL. There are still retarded fanboys and idiots with thousands of posts. The real shit posters get banned soon enough anyway.

i think it's most important to obey/idolize members with purple names

Lol, not all the people with special ranks make good posts.

Lol, what is with your name/icon anyway? I don't think I've never seen another purple name.

I usually follow a few people that I've seen post well. And names which jump out at me regularly (I.E JohnColtrane, fyre_dragon, monion, etc.)
The rest I devour in an attempt to find something good, while not noticing the username. Then i stumble upon gold and check the username.

I usually just read the longer posts in the thread. They seem to be most conducive to learning. I mean granted, there are some people who just post up hilarious stuff, but when I look for knowledge, there are always certain names that I look for before reading.

Well,
#1 I'm not asking it be about post counts. That would only incite spammers. #2 I'm asking for a highly recognized quality poster get an icon/color. This will make it easier to read #3 I don't read the whole thread just for the luls... Bad posts or misinformation just don't seem very funny to me. To each their own.
I'm not asking for bad posts to be deleted, just regularly good posters get recognized as such.
If nobody read the posts that came from people who didn't have a star, fancy icon, or different-coloured name then we'd never be able to get any new people that will one day obtain the aforementioned items.
That doesn't make much sense to me. Nothing would change, all the rest of the posts would be there for everyone to read who wants to read everything.

Sometimes I wonder if this would be a good thing, especially with the sudden influx of new users. I especially hate the posts that are just a wall of text. If a post has decent formatting and grammar I'm 100% more likely to read it.

Yeah, any more than 7 lines per paragraph is tough to read :/

A star by the name usually denotes a quality/known poster
