I watched a bit of it but it's def. not a spectator sport. The angles are really weird. I assume its better when playing.

Well, invest is a strong word. It was crowd funded. They released items that were part of the "Odyssey" and part of the money went into the prize pool. Basically what Valve does. I don't know how much of a splash the game made in e-sports, but I'm sure they are very happy with how this Smite Championship / Smite Proleague turned out and they'll do it again this year.

So the MOBA genre starts to be really crowded. EIDT: wait, the whole 2.6mln$ was crowdsourced?

Altho the term crowdfunding has been flying around a lot, it isn't exactly true, the money was gathered throught the Odissey, an event in which the game received slightly more pantheon-thematic content than usual (only cosmetics, of course) and you got a random roll into another gem only object for every "Odissey" tagged item you bought; of the converted real money value of the gems spent into the Odissey (and only those tagged as such), 25% were put into the prizepool by Hi-Rez..... so yea, it's not quite crowdfunding in the most classical sense. Then you have to consider that Smite gives a LOT of free gems that you can gather just by playing, so when those gems are spent into the Odissey, Hi Rez is just directly putting money in the pool (for istance, you get 50 gems every week just for logging in, and during holiday events you can easily ratchet up 200+ gems in a couple days (i think christmas alone was almost 100 gems for 6 victories or something like that?) For reference, 400 gems is 6,40€, the most expensive skins are 400 and 600 gems. Smite is easily the revelation new eSport of 2014 (unless you cheat with C$:GO ), and sits now easily and clearly in the position of third most important MOBA, sporting the most honest business model outside of Steam coupled with a certain ease of entry and the friendliest community of all MOBAs (seriously, it's depressing to say that Smite reddit is more friendly and positive than TL, nowadays....) *+ Show Spoiler + god skins in smite are usually distinguished between recolors (palette swap) that can be somewhat easily picked up for in game money, and remodels with redone voice packs and the like that are gem only, all of the Odissey content belonged to the 2nd category

Basically, I'm sure the Odyssey was a success for them, they made a ton of money and they'll do another "Odyssey" this year.

Besides, you should remember that League of Legends has a paying customer rate of 3% i think? and that game requires a lot more money, the Smite % is probably lower; And yet the full brunt of the smite population was contributing to the prizepool out of Hi-Rez's wallet Odissey was definitely a success for them, and i really hope they will do another event like that this year, it was fun to have "thematic" skins and rewards, and the quality of assets rose drammatically before and during it (Not to mention i got excellent older skins at a bargain due to the free random rolls ^^)

As for viewing the game: wow, some really shit angles. The game is way too fast paced for some of the angles and views they try to use. Team fights get really hard to follow. As for playing the game: I've played a few vs bots so far and it actually seems pretty fun. I might spend a couple of my days off playing it and seeing how it sticks.

@pzea469 - the same goes for me. I played like three games and never think twice about reinstalling the game. You almost convinced me to split time between Smite and Heroes of the Storm.

I played like three games and never think twice about reinstalling the game. You almost convinced me to split time between Smite and Heroes of the Storm. Couple reasons, let me try to get a list: 1) Absence of every kind of rune system or skill unlock based on playtime, if you can select a god, say He Bo, you can totally clone all my playstyle as a level 30 mastery X He Bo player, nothing but your own skill is in the way of beating a more experienced/equipped player. 2) Rent-a-god system, while i'm sure this is not unique to smite, you can rent any god you usually couldn't play for a game (or for more than a single game, the price scales, but can't remember how) for 50 favors, which is about the quantity of in game money you get for a shortish loss (game money gain scales from about 40 minimum for the worst losses to upwards of 150-200 for first wins of the day (there's a different FotD for everyone of the 6 game modes) 3) The price to permanently buy a god is 5500 favor, and you get 500 favor(or was it 1000? i think 500 tho) every time your account levels up, so you essentially get a free god regardless of how much money you're making every 10 level (level cap=30) also, smite rotation is different from Heroes and LoL's, as you get 5 gods in free rotation every week, but 5 other gods are automatically given to you permanently upon account creation (the most standard adherents of their paradygms, arguably, altho Thor and Ymir are both top tier tournament picks) 4) The big reason, The Ultimate God pack, priced at 30$ or 23€, this thing is like buying a retail game, as it unlocks permanently all non cosmetic content presently in the game and future content too (aka all the Gods); you could literally make a new lvl 1 account, purchase the god pack, and give it to a pro tournament player who would be istantly on par with his old account (cosmetics aside) (don't know why you would do that, as there's an inexpensive paid namechange and clan system in the game, but you can) It even beats out the HoN treatment that the old p2p players got when the game went f2p, in which you got all the heroes except those in the 2week beta system, Smite gives you istant access to the newly released gods in their tournament ban period of 2 weeks as well On top of this, as i mentioned Hi-Rez does a lot of giveaways of premium currency, and you are guaranteed 50 gems on daily logins on a per week basis As far as i'm aware this blows out of the water any MOBA that doesn't run on steam power....

So the new map has changed buffs around (again, if you've been playing since beta you remember the wondrous Green buff ) Solo lane/FG side has both team's Orange/Speed buffs, and likewise the Red/Damage buffs are now both on the Duo lane/GF side. Also, the Blue/Mana buffs on that side have been replaced with a Purple Buff - increases attack speed. This is interesting, as it's logical for Hunters but also is detrimental for those mana-hungry Hunters. Maybe this means an increase in Transcendence?
