Hi-Rez is very active on reddit and it's a good place to stay up to date with patch notes and new gods.
Smite is a free to play, third person MOBA where you play as Gods and mythical beings from different pantheons. The game is developed by Hi-Rez Studios(http://www.hirezstudios.com).
Playing in third person changes the way the game is played a lot. Almost everything in the game, including basic attacks is a skillshot. Also you cannot see behind you unless you turn around, meaning ganks can be deadly since you might not see them coming until it's too late. On the flip side you can see very far forward so attacks from the front are never a surprise. So it's safe to say that the third person camera is NOT a gimmick, but instead gives the game a whole different feeling than other mobas.
If playing as your favorite Gods and battling it out sounds like fun to you, then I highly suggest you give the game a try and see how much fun it is for yourself! Also, don't worry if you've never played a MOBA or don't normally enjoy them. Smite is filled with players who have never played a MOBA before or never liked them until playing this game.
The main Game Mode in Smite is Conquest. This is your typical 5v5 moba experience, with 3 lanes, a jungle and an objective the team must kill to win the game. Like in other mobas, this mode is very deep and takes a lot to master. This is also the main competitive mode.
However, there are other more casual game modes that are a ton of fun, such as Arena, Assault, and Domination. These are modes that anyone can get into, and is a good way to learn the Gods and just have a great time. There is also a 1v1 Joust mode if you want a more personal challenge.
Smite is NOT pay to win. You only get 10 gods from the start, but you can unlock EVERY god with in-game currency. And no, it doesn't take a ton of grinding to unlock one. You can even unlock cosmetic recolors with in-game currency. The only things that one has to buy with real money are full god remodels. Also you can gain Gems(Smites real money currency) by logging in every day for a week, and referring people to the game.
The Smite scene is constantly growing. With tournaments running all the time and the player base steadily increasing. Also with all the changes and improvements being done to the game, it's a very exciting time to be a Smite fan. So what are you waiting for? Hurry up and join already!!
After having extensively played LoL (Gold V), trying DotA2 (not a ton, but some), and missing old school WoW PvP, this game is the only I'll be playing for the next period. It's immensely fun, and feels more coordinated and skill based than the other MOBAs in terms of actual combat control. My old WoW buddies, and many of my LoL buddies, have switched as well.
The 3v3 Joust and Arena game modes are especially refreshing, combining the MOBA build style with much better combat than League.
I've only been playing since the end of April but I do find Smite really fun. As someone who tried out DotA and LoL but never really got much into it, the gameplay felt a lot more comfortable for me from the start.
Watching the tournaments has become something of a weekly ritual for me. It's just a shame that the competitive scene is so small, I think a lot of people get bored of watching the same teams every weekend. Nonetheless, I love it, especially getting to see it from Lassiz or Zapman's perspective.
I used to only play conquest, but since 3v3 Joust came out I've been playing that with friends a lot. I highly recommend it.
Anyway, not much else I can think of to say but thanks for making a thread for this awesome game and I hope more people try it.
Played it for a couple of weeks up until they brought in Guan Yu and instantly stopped playing then.
Game was alright, but everything just felt kinda 'meh' especially during big fights. Hopefully it does get more popular though, would be interesting to see how it pans out.

If you liked it, you should probably give it another try, the game has been improved a lot since Guan Yu came.. more gods, better map, improved graphics, better balance...
Personally, I found the game to be a great casual game to play with friends in... LoL used to be our game like that, but while LoL is casual IMO, it's not even close to as casual as Smite and as people started to get better at LoL it was harder to keep the light mood, so Smite was a better option.
I don't actively play it any more, but it's definitely a game I recommend to people who want a moba with more focus on direct action.
As people started to get better at lol? How does that work with an MMR system and millions of players, are you the worst of the worst or something?
I hope hi-rez doesnt abandon this game like they have their last two. I want to try it out sometime, i did try at one point but it blue screened my PC. GG

With people, I meant my friends I played with, not the LoL population. When people get better, they get more tryhard and the fun atmosphere of a casual game is ruined.
hm whats so casual about this game? judging from the stuff that ive seen it adds aiming to the whole arts gameplay, so looks pretty amazing to me tbh. but i fear its community is somewhat small?

3v3 Joust and Arena are pretty much all I've been playing lately. MUCH deeper combat than LoL or DotA2.

It's fairly small right now, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Curse and Dignitas have Smite teams, if that lends any credibility. The game feels casual at first because there isn't a creep score counter (though they do matter) and people forget that they're playing at level one. There's no denial, which isn't a bad thing in my opinion. The micro is significantly deeper than DotA2 or LoL (no "click on this guy to attack him" bs), since everything is a skillshot including auto attacks.
I paid $20 when this game was in alpha. It was buggy, laggy, and looked like shit but it looks like they finally listened to the community and fixed some glaring issues that made it unfun before.
Started playing after watching SSoHPKC make a video on it. So far I'm only level 2 and still in the range of players who have never played a moba before so its a little boring. Game mechanics are super fun though, could see myself maybe playing once in a while.

Knowing Hi-Rez, the game will be dropped when they will start working actively on GA2, Tribes or even a Smite 2 lol. That's how Hi-Rez work, cheap game done quickly for quick cash then rinse and repeat.

I don't want to start a flaming war here, but all I can say is, you're just totally wrong.

I'll have to give this another go.
Do it man, totally worth it!

It's 5v5 Conquest. Speaking of which, there is a Conquest map overhaul and will be live tomorrow!
So I tried this game in its current form and it is not more micro intensive, or more complex than LoL or Dota 2. The game is basically what you'd find in a Action MMORPG type game with Battlegrounds or Arenas. Anyone who has played Tera or Neverwinter (MMORPGs that use action targeting) will see the same type of playstyle here. That being said, the whole aiming mechanic does not make this game deeper in any way. Anyone claiming otherwise has oversimplified the strategy portions of the other games similar to this one.

Strategy != Mechanics. The micro is much more intensive (Gold LoL player). The teamfighting is worlds deeper, but I've recently started playing Arena only. It's the perfect solution to the void caused by WoW PvP's death.

I got a number of my old 2k+ WoW arena buddies to play Arena, now they're hooked. I'll eventually be starting a team to play competitively, and/or a Clan for 5queuing (we 4 and 5 queued Arena all weekend - haven't had this much fun since WotLK arena!). Let me know what times you usually play and I'll see if I have a spot for ya
Today it was annouced in a closed press conference that Tencent is parterning with HiRez Studios to bring Smite to the Asian Pacific market. Paraphrased from the Chinese press release: "Tencent obtained distribution rights to Smite, Chinese name of God Catastrophe, and expects the release to be in mainland China in October with release to other regions later this year". This is of course huge news for Smite as a community, Tencent was one of the backing forces behind the growth of League, and wen can expect a large growth in global players.
This is a big deal and Smite will probably become a lot bigger very fast due to this deal. I believe Tencent is at least partly responsible for League being as big as it is.

Well the game is in open beta now and completely free to play so I'm not sure what you'd be selling. I'd say try it out again when you get the chance. It's pretty much the only competitive game I play now.

Is it easy and fast to get a game in this? I don't like LoL/Dota, but this game looks fun to me. Just want to make sure this has a decently active community and has some noob friendly stuff cause I think I might give this a shot

Its waaaay easy to get into this game. Just make an account and join the Arena queue, kill people and respawn almost instantly.
Also 30 bucks for all gods and every god thats going to be released is a nice deal. Plus you can still buy skins with favor(earned in game).
Sadly, HiRez will probably do with SMITE what they did with Tribes:Ascend. They updated and worked on Tribes and then basically stopped updating and fixing things and left it alone to go work on SMITE. Whenever the next title from HiRez comes around then I'm pretty sure they are going to stop updating and fixing things in SMITE to work on the other title.
I wouldn't waste money on this game if I were you. I was silly enough to waste money in Tribes to then learn that they abandoned it.

HiRez did the best job (atm) in terms of noobfriendlyness. They have tutorials and practice modes which are actually kinda good. They even have AI gods(bots) to play against. Arena is an awesome place to learn all heroes and get a good grasp on what will kill you and turnaround-situations etc for late conquest games. Assault is for all the "only mid" fellaz, so even they get what they want .
In general my (non-moba playing) friends got into Smite really really easy. Give it a shot!
Oh yea, community... It's active enough but don't expect it too be any different - in terms of manners - from Dota/Lol

TLDR for the link; HiRez invested(lost) alot of money(GA&TA), had lower revenue than investment. SMITE is the first game they developed to actually be profitable.
So to the context; Smite will most likly not be abonded that easy; making money guud yo!

I agree with Disengage. They've been doing the same thing since they started, I doubt anything will change.
IMHO, there's nothing relevant in there at all. Just someone who doesn't really want to admit they are making mistake after mistake and blame it on the fact that some games "fail" or "all games see their playerbase decline". You can't expect people to continue playing your games if you stop pushing content for it for a really long time just to work on another attempt at a money making game. It's also very funny how he nearly doesn't talk about "What will HiRez do with Smite" at all when its supposed to be the point... All they're saying is that the game is profitable atm, have more people who work on it and they found an outside publisher. They never said anywhere that what happen with GA and TA won't happen to smite when they will actively work on GA2. They also didn't talk about what they will add in the game in the long run so that people continue to play and spend money on it.
They lost a lot of money because of GA and yet they want to make another one. The worst in all this is that they apparently lost more money than their revenue after 2 games and they still think they can make it work with a MOBA where the competition is fierce and the 2 top contenders won't be dethrone anytime soon. I bet in the long run, Smite will make them loose money. But that's just my opinion.

All the previous games made them lose money so they stopped, which is completely normal. Tribes didn't fail to make them money because Hi-Rez stopped making content. Hi-Rez stopped making content because Tribes failed to make them money, had poor esports potential since it was so hard to watch, and had a split community who strongly disagreed about how Tribes needed to adapt.
Smite is the first one that is making a profit for Hi-Rez so they decided to publicly announce that they're taking all their workforce and focusing on Smite, and we went from an update every 2 weeks to one every week and amazing art overhauls. Of course he can't promise that Smite won't be abandoned in that reddit post. That would be a lie. They'll leave Smite if the playerbase decreases and the game stops turning in a profit. And that's completely normal, especially for smaller game companies. If they stop working on Smite and move to GA2 with the same team size, it will be because Smite stopped making them money. And when/if that happens, I won't be mad or complain. Especially when so much of the money came from the pockets of one of the founders of Hi-Rez. Yes Smite could fail, but right now it's still growing strong and many fans, including myself, believe it has a great shot at being in the same arena with Lol and Dota one day.
I used to play this a lot about a year and a half ago. Honestly I enjoyed it more than LoL or dota. I'm a fan of the 3rd person view. It's a lot funner to cast spells and stuff over the shoulder.
I used to play this game competitively, until the whole jungle role was implemented. I didn't like the direction they were taking the game at that point. I think that before the introduction of junglers, smite was easily one of the best games I have ever played.
Might try it again now that it has launched, seems like they added lots of new gods and other miscellaneous updates.
wasant this called league of legends like 5 years ago ? but it turned out so bad that riot had to remake the game ? like all the stuff are very similara , forrest " buff " concept , recall in base , etc ?
This really is a good game. I could never get into other mobas, but I think hirez really succeeded in creating something that feels fun, intuitive (with a high skill ceiling due to aiming/dodging mechanics) and really builds on a genre that was getting a bit formulaic.
I haven't managed to convince any friends to play it yet though. :p If anyone wants to play some games and maybe teach me a thing or two, send me a friend request: I'm Greydient.
picked the game up a week ago. kinda ignored it after seeing early beta footage but my bro started playing it bit ago and was hyping it hard. well i downloaded it, played a day, bought the godpack (23$ and you get all+future gods) the next day and now have played a shitton over the last week.
it plays pretty much like a skillbased mmo mixed with lol/dota. if you have some expirience with them youll pick it up fast.
def worth checking out and while i dislike the "farm forever to unlock heroes/champions/gods or pay $$$" model the godpack has a fair price and gives you all the content outside of purely aesthetic stuff.
I still enjoy Smite, but I don't feel that it's growing too much on it's own merits. Part of it is riding the esports hype train, and specifically the MOBA one. It's a great game, don't get me wrong, and I'd love to see it become huge, but it still has a ways to go imo.
FIRST game in eSports history to clear the $2,000,000 prize pool for a tournament on their first year. 5th biggest prize pool in eSports history. One of the only 4 companies in eSports history to ever have a $1,000,000+ prize pool. One of only 3 companies in eSports history to ever have a $2,000,000+ prize pool.
Also the Xbox One version will be available for play at SWC so console players will probably be getting their hands on Smite soon.
Started playing this with my son. I've had a good time with it, not as involved as Dota but the key word is FUN. It's not going to replace my Dota addiction but its definitely earned a place in my game rotation.
I am interested in this game now watching the world championship. My dota2 ping is permanently bad and I am tired of LoL. Looks like a game to try out.
I play smite every now and then with a friend and it is definetely a fun game, IMO it is better then league. although its E-sports scene is quite limited.

I watched a bit of it but it's def. not a spectator sport. The angles are really weird. I assume its better when playing.
They invested 2.6mln$ in the World Championship - I only imagine they hoped to make a splash in esports news with it to draw more attention. Any success?

Well, invest is a strong word. It was crowd funded. They released items that were part of the "Odyssey" and part of the money went into the prize pool. Basically what Valve does. I don't know how much of a splash the game made in e-sports, but I'm sure they are very happy with how this Smite Championship / Smite Proleague turned out and they'll do it again this year.

OK. So the MOBA genre starts to be really crowded. EIDT: wait, the whole 2.6mln$ was crowdsourced?
I really liked watching a few matches yesterday. Seems like a fun game and a MOBA that suits me better than League of Legends (I detest clicking to move).
On January 12 2015 19:39 sashkata wrote: Wasn't sure myself, so I had to look it up. Apparently 600 000 was from Hi Rez. 2 mill crowd funded. The crowd funding lasted 21 weeks.
Altho the term crowdfunding has been flying around a lot, it isn't exactly true, the money was gathered throught the Odissey, an event in which the game received slightly more pantheon-thematic content than usual (only cosmetics, of course) and you got a random roll into another gem only object for every "Odissey" tagged item you bought; of the converted real money value of the gems spent into the Odissey (and only those tagged as such), 25% were put into the prizepool by Hi-Rez..... so yea, it's not quite crowdfunding in the most classical sense.
Then you have to consider that Smite gives a LOT of free gems that you can gather just by playing, so when those gems are spent into the Odissey, Hi Rez is just directly putting money in the pool (for istance, you get 50 gems every week just for logging in, and during holiday events you can easily ratchet up 200+ gems in a couple days (i think christmas alone was almost 100 gems for 6 victories or something like that?) For reference, 400 gems is 6,40€, the most expensive skins are 400 and 600 gems.
Smite is easily the revelation new eSport of 2014 (unless you cheat with C$:GO ), and sits now easily and clearly in the position of third most important MOBA, sporting the most honest business model outside of Steam coupled with a certain ease of entry and the friendliest community of all MOBAs (seriously, it's depressing to say that Smite reddit is more friendly and positive than TL, nowadays....)
god skins in smite are usually distinguished between recolors (palette swap) that can be somewhat easily picked up for in game money, and remodels with redone voice packs and the like that are gem only, all of the Odissey content belonged to the 2nd category
I think you overestimate how much free gems impacted the prize pool. I'm pretty sure the amount contributed to the prize pool, because of that is insignificant. Even if you farm up 1000 gems that's 5$ (it's 1$ per 200 gems right?). And that's a lot for most people. I'm a person that spends stupid amount of time in front of the PC and even I don't log in every day or play modes I don't want to just to get some free gems.
Basically, I'm sure the Odyssey was a success for them, they made a ton of money and they'll do another "Odyssey" this year.
yes, it's 1$ for 200 gems, but do keep in mind that the 50 gems for daily logins thing was added like a month or two ago tops, before that it was a gem gain weekend per month or more (mostly depending what hi-rez felt like,lol) i totally farmed much more than 1000 gems, and i lost a couple events due to my despise of one particular gamemode;
Besides, you should remember that League of Legends has a paying customer rate of 3% i think? and that game requires a lot more money, the Smite % is probably lower; And yet the full brunt of the smite population was contributing to the prizepool out of Hi-Rez's wallet
Odissey was definitely a success for them, and i really hope they will do another event like that this year, it was fun to have "thematic" skins and rewards, and the quality of assets rose drammatically before and during it (Not to mention i got excellent older skins at a bargain due to the free random rolls ^^)
Okay, I hadn't touched Smite since super early beta. I remember signing up for it and getting in and playing a game or two and then ditching it. This had to have been, I dunno, 2 years ago? I was surprised to even see a Smite World Championship...and even more surprised that after a few minutes of figuring things out I was enjoying the stream. The 4 analysts did a great job. I didn't really know what they were saying a lot of the time, but they were all really good at their job. Their interactions with each other were great, and when they called that one guy out for not picking Titan (day 2, i think), and then Titan's two coaches came walking up out of no where to give him a little shit/get an impromptu interview, it was a really fun scene.
As for viewing the game: wow, some really shit angles. The game is way too fast paced for some of the angles and views they try to use. Team fights get really hard to follow.
As for playing the game: I've played a few vs bots so far and it actually seems pretty fun. I might spend a couple of my days off playing it and seeing how it sticks.
I remember watching League and Dota games and thinking that team fights were impossible to keep track of. I couldn't keep up with what was going on and I just thought it was a mess. My friends on the other hand had no problem keeping up with anything. With Smite everything seems so clear to me, and all the angles looked great. I now realize that it's because I know the game so well that everything is easy to understand for me. The same way League and Dota are easy to keep up with if you know the game well. I can totally see how someone who doesn't know the game would have a super hard time keeping up with what's going on, but through the whole event, me, my friends, and the whole community haven't said anything negative about the spectator aspect of the game. It's been the opposite, the camera people have been praised for doing an incredible job with a much more improved experience to previous tournaments.
Here is a nice highlight video of the final match of the tournament between Cog Prime and Titan CONTAINS SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY + Show Spoiler +
How is Smite business model more honest than i.e. LoL's?
@pzea469 - the same goes for me. I played like three games and never think twice about reinstalling the game. You almost convinced me to split time between Smite and Heroes of the Storm.

Couple reasons, let me try to get a list:
1) Absence of every kind of rune system or skill unlock based on playtime, if you can select a god, say He Bo, you can totally clone all my playstyle as a level 30 mastery X He Bo player, nothing but your own skill is in the way of beating a more experienced/equipped player.
2) Rent-a-god system, while i'm sure this is not unique to smite, you can rent any god you usually couldn't play for a game (or for more than a single game, the price scales, but can't remember how) for 50 favors, which is about the quantity of in game money you get for a shortish loss (game money gain scales from about 40 minimum for the worst losses to upwards of 150-200 for first wins of the day (there's a different FotD for everyone of the 6 game modes)
3) The price to permanently buy a god is 5500 favor, and you get 500 favor(or was it 1000? i think 500 tho) every time your account levels up, so you essentially get a free god regardless of how much money you're making every 10 level (level cap=30) also, smite rotation is different from Heroes and LoL's, as you get 5 gods in free rotation every week, but 5 other gods are automatically given to you permanently upon account creation (the most standard adherents of their paradygms, arguably, altho Thor and Ymir are both top tier tournament picks)
4) The big reason, The Ultimate God pack, priced at 30$ or 23€, this thing is like buying a retail game, as it unlocks permanently all non cosmetic content presently in the game and future content too (aka all the Gods); you could literally make a new lvl 1 account, purchase the god pack, and give it to a pro tournament player who would be istantly on par with his old account (cosmetics aside) (don't know why you would do that, as there's an inexpensive paid namechange and clan system in the game, but you can) It even beats out the HoN treatment that the old p2p players got when the game went f2p, in which you got all the heroes except those in the 2week beta system, Smite gives you istant access to the newly released gods in their tournament ban period of 2 weeks as well
On top of this, as i mentioned Hi-Rez does a lot of giveaways of premium currency, and you are guaranteed 50 gems on daily logins on a per week basis
As far as i'm aware this blows out of the water any MOBA that doesn't run on steam power....
So the new map has changed buffs around (again, if you've been playing since beta you remember the wondrous Green buff )
Solo lane/FG side has both team's Orange/Speed buffs, and likewise the Red/Damage buffs are now both on the Duo lane/GF side. Also, the Blue/Mana buffs on that side have been replaced with a Purple Buff - increases attack speed.
This is interesting, as it's logical for Hunters but also is detrimental for those mana-hungry Hunters. Maybe this means an increase in Transcendence?
I suppose they want hunters to actually itemize for mana. As it was before you pretty much ignored it. 10% attack speed is not enough to ignore building that stat and if you lose it late game it's going to suck a bit more than losing the mana buff.
My friend always buys meditation and spams like crazy anyway. lol
I've been playing this since they started advertising the championship, and there are a few things I really like compared to dota. I haven't made my mind up on which I like more.
1) If your tower hits a creep, that creep no longer gives xp or gold. This makes pushing the lane in the laning phase actually desirable, and you start spending mana and abilities to kill creeps.
2) Ranged attacks are skillshots, and can be blocked by creeps. It adds a bit of fun to be able to hide from ranged attacks like you would hide from Pudge's hook. Of course, many abilities pierce creeps.
3) Juking. It's just fun when abilities and attacks are skillshots and they can be dodged.
4) Phoenix (aka T3 tower + barracks) can respawn after a short time. It respawns with low health, so the mega creeps will just destroy the thing immediately, but if you push out the lane while it's down, you can recover from that situation. That is also very fun
5) The winning team can max out on items+skills around the 25 minute mark. This means that if you're losing hard at the 20 minute mark, the enemy will pull ahead of you, but then the gap will shrink once they max out. Your team will be getting stronger and theirs won't, which makes comebacks more possible.
6) Information of what items people have, how much gold they make, the gold/exp graphs of each team, are all available to players during the match. This is controversial I'm sure, but I think it's nice.
On top of all of this, the game controls and plays very fluidly compared to back in the alpha/beta stage. I recommend anyone to give it a shot.
Smite is coming to Steam! Waves of keys have already gone out twice and players are already testing Smite on Steam. You do NOT have to reinstall Smite and Steam players can play with non-Steam players so you're not forced to use Steam. You can use money you have on Steam to purchase Gems in Smite.
