I've noticed a lot of posts like "never played in 8 months cuz game sucks, HotS did nothing, widow mines op and swarm hosts suck." When in reality the level that we're at in HotS is 100% better than we've ever probably been, and people glimmering over ' the golden age of sc2 is 2011" fail to remember roach hydra corruptor dying to colossus death balls over and over, fail to remember that was where mass muta started to get started and maps sucked so hard. ( even at end of 2011 blizzard cup shakurus was still used). Sc2 has honestly never been better. LoL may be bigger in viewers but its not bigger in passion and that's what drives a community. We average comparable numbers despite being a bought game and way less total players. And Dota 2 isn't even close to SC2 viewership in any week that's not the International. Truly the most worrisome thing is how many people can believe this game is dying despite evidence to the contrary. We get out of over saturation and them people complain when there are less tournaments. New tournaments are springing up like Hong Kong and NA team leagues which you probably aren't aware of because they're not prominently streamed. In my NA team we play clan wars like twice a week, and we're not even really "that" good. Red bill is shining and clearly taking am interest, KeSPa has arrived and elevated the level of play. We get great games and great stories and are close to (my personal hope, but what you will) Rain joining am elite Eight who have dual OSL victories. Like that's incredible! Zerg may be doing bad, but it's not anywhere near truly imbalanced and the best player can always win no matter what, much similar to the zvt scenario in 2010-2011. Anyway, love you all and love this game and SC2 is not going anywhere as long as you guys live this game. Because that's what our SC2 community has always been about.

What we need is not a starcraft VS Dota or Starcraft VS LOL as these games are different Genre. Technically its Dota VS LOL! I know they are classified as RTS but like all things in computers and as gaming evolves people will realize this. Football is not Soccer is not Hockey. But I love them all. Cheers to the Rise of eSports!

Starcraft 2 is soooo far from being dead. All of the band wagoners have moved onto LoL/DotA 2, so the fact that we still reach respectable numbers is amazing. We have many years of Starcraft 2 to enjoy.

I would also say if you like LOL, great play the game; even if DOTA2 pushes it out of the spotlight and off the ticket at all major competitive venues.

Then compare that number to Dota's peak of 500k and LoL's peak of 5million. Blizz always made it hard to see SC2's numbers. It wouldn't surprise me if it was shockingly low.

Dota-like's games have huge playerbase. That's not a surprise at all.. Comparing RTS playerbase to them is just ridiculuos.

I don't think anyone is arguing that the MOBA's are more popular than starcraft, they are free so if they weren't it would be pretty shocking tbh.

I think that the DOTA 2 idea of investing in the Tournament as a service level product and then directly re-invest that value back into the prize pools is a great idea. The fans feel like their cash goes to the players and those who buy also end up watching. Increasing the viewership for the live events that have sponsors. This makes the sponsors happy.

With WOW players trusted blizzard to re-invest in the product with that money. And i believe that they did and the numbers they see albeit dropping off now are huge and are the fruits of a great deal of labour. MOBA's today have not come close to working in that large of an environment yet. When we include Content, number of servers and concurent players. WOW is still king and in a world of f2p games and no loyalty gamers. I am shocked they are still doing as well as they are.

These players also know what it is like to have a well supported service with tons of content. I think alot of the newer players take the work involved for granted. I think that Star wars MMO is an example of this. players complain that the enhancements are not coming in fast enough or with the polish they would like to see. But are unwilling to pay per month to support that development. With WOW players trusted blizzard to re-invest in the product with that money. My point really is that a game doesnt become more successful over a non free to play game simply because it's free. To be able to attract millions of players to a game simply means the developers are at least doing some things right with regards to the design.

There are plenty of free MMOs that eclipse the # of players in WoW. And then there are also plenty of free MMOs that fall tragically short. Mobas are addictive casual fun. StarCraft 2 is a strategy game with a fairly high skill ceiling and can be stressful. Dota and LoL are also free and thus more accessible than StarCraft is. Of course they're going to have more players and be more popular.
