Why is there even an argument about this? If this community wants esports to grow you will not support racist/homophobic language being spouted by a representative of the community. Maybe you don't like that idea - maybe you even feel it violates free speech - well, that's shitty, but potential/current sponsors aren't going to look at this thread (which is at the top of TL right now) and say "hmm everyone here makes some really good points about linguistics, and that Destiny fellow really is a free thinker!". They're going to say "fuck sponsoring these people it isn't worth it and we're going to get in trouble." Everyone here has different views on what is acceptable or not, but unless you're going to fund the whole scene you have to assume this sport will not grow unless you cut shit that's unacceptable in the public domain (no matter if you think it's acceptable or not).
As a sidenote, I think it's pretty funny that people are claiming Destiny isn't racist when he specifically used "gook" after the poster used Korean to type "GG". To me, that's a situation where Destiny picked the word he knew would most likely cause the most offense and harm to someone who is Asian or of Asian descent. For Destiny it wasn't just a word, it was a word he knew had the chance to cause the maximum amount of damage because it denigrates Asians - and that should be totally unacceptable. This isn't the first time I've seen him do this either. His choice of language when bming changes depending upon what server he's on. Now I don't think Destiny should be fired over this or anything, but come on, stop claiming words don't mean anything when you specifically select certain words when you think you're playing a person of a specific race or culture.

This time around, maybe there isn't much damage. Maybe it doesn't really effect how they work within SC2. But if we make this a force of habit, if we do this each time we are upset.. it grows and becomes a huge issue. We need to stop doing this because we are toying with shit we don't see and we are messing with massively important companies.
There are other ways of protesting issues. Mail the team, post on the forums, tweet, actively stop watching functions.. etc etc.. be responsible. We don't need to throw shit at the top of the pyramid hoping it will trickle down and hit the guys on the bottom. Throw shit at the guys doing it! Go to those responsible directly: the team! Do you, InControl, think that Quantic Gaming is unaware of Destiny's use of questionable language? Do you, InControl, think that Quantic Gaming has never considered the business costs and benefits of having such a volatile personality on the payroll?
I think they are obviously aware of it and took the risk to put him on the team. However, they may not be aware of just how strongly the community dissaproves of his actions. That is why I personally think people should chill the fuck out on trying to circumvent Quantic and leave the sponsors out of this (for now). At least give them the benefit of the doubt and allow them a chance to respond to the situation.
Something to keep in mind, somehow this has not been a huge issue until today. Destiny has been "Destiny" for months? years? why all of a sudden? Clearly it wasn't a huge issue until now. That's why we should at least give Quantic a chance to rectify the situation before going balls out and heading for the sponsors first. If you don't approve of their response(or lack of) then by all means, contact the sponsors then. But that should not be the first step.

Aaaaand it's moments like these that I weep for the fact that the BW greats are switching over to this community which is probably on the same level as the fighting game community with regards to immaturity irregardless of your self-perception. What a joke, if you want people to take esports seriously shit like this shouldn't fly and people have every right to contact sponsors about this.

This kind of language is not acceptable in any kind of healthy community. I know this is the internet and you may think it's OK to say all kinds of awful things and it's OK to offend people and call them names in a racist manner.People get charged by real life penalties for similiar things are are considered as a OK thing by some of the community. People don't understand how bad it really is to take this shit directly to the sponsors. Sure that will hit them hard, but your potentially preventing esports from securing said sponsor again.
This shit right here is what is killing esports.

No it doesn't. You're not allowed to use speech to marginalize others. Freedom of Speech is to protect well formed arguments and ideas, it has no obligation to give a platform to nonsensical hatred and bigotry.

Esports will never even survive if it has cancerous personalities like Destiny in it.

Using racial slurs, even if you aren't a "true" racist, breeds a atmosphere/community where it is easier to be a racist. So, even if you aren't a "true" racist when you call everyone a "jew" or "muslim" when you get angry, you still help making it easier for others to be racist.
And I find that utterly disgusting. I hope Destiny changes his vocabulary...or gets the foot.

Best post so far. The whole "freedom of speech" actually has rules, if you called someone a racial slur in real life you would risk a nice fine and probably more than that.
No actual human beings in the real world (outside your room) accept this kind of behavior, it is strictly niche stuff on the internet. And for some reason, the online gaming community has adopted it for mysterious reasons.
But of course this topic is more about Razor and that sponsorship $$$ than proper ethics, actual maturity and behaving like an actual real adult.

Meh, Destiny is just immature as hell. I'm not going to grab a pitchfork and spam Quantic saying they should drop him, but I think he should learn some self-control to the point where he doesnt just type racial slurs at people everytime he gets allined. Quit the fucking game if it bothers you that much.

Too bad more than half the people here are only here to complain because they can. Maybe that's also satire.

E-mailing Quantic isn't going to change anything, you have to e-mail Razor. If you think Razor is going to stop sponsoring SC2 in general, when their income is largely derived off gaming retail, you're crazy.

I think it's very amusing to see how two-faced the community can come off as.
I do think that SOMETHING should be addressed here between Quantic and Destiny.
|
Pls dear Star Craft 2 community, tell me, what is better:
1. Tell Destiny and Quantic, that he makes racial slurs, which probably you don't even care about or get offended, with a chance, that nothing would really change
or 2. Tell Razor, who will reconsider investing in Sc2, when they get contacted from the community every second Tuesday and by that also punish other teams -> tournaments -> punishing everything in esport?

Freedom of speech is a two way street.
Destiny is well within his rights to use whatever language he wants, just like everyone else is well within their rights to then say whatever they want to his sponsors.
|
First, nothing would happen if Destiny wouldn't be so bm every time he plays, so why blame on the people that is emailing sponsors/quantic or w/e. Blame it on Destiny who started all of this, people reporting him to razer/quantic is doing the right thing. And if you bitch about we shouldn't email them you are the wrong guy letting this to continue happening.
