Alex is verbose, and you owe it to yourself (and the rest of us) to read the statement in its entirety. Remember, when making comments/claims to provide proper evidence, facts etc. Arguments based on incorrect assumptions, facts and straw men, will be dealt with swiftly. If in doubt, PM a mod or ask IRC. Do NOT spread misinformation, when in doubt, check your sources. In short, be smart. Really? You don't know? It's funny when people on TL say "Go back to reddit." Like what does that even mean anymore? Team Liquid and Reddit aren't even distinguishable anymore.

He doesn't want the word to be dis-empowered, and he finds the cavalier and casual use of the word by nerds to be a slap in the face to all the people that have persecuted with it. For it to enter the lexicon of everyday language is ignoring everyone that it offends, and only deepens and widens the racial divide. Pretending that words don't matter, or only matters 'in-context,' just ignores racial issues, and doesn't 'eradicate' anything. That's absurd. The word only has meaning as it exists in the vernacular. Words have undergone changes in meaning in English for hundreds of years. English itself is only a vernacular language of the common folk. To suggest a word should be frozen in time and given deference is only perpetuating racism and growing the thoughts associated. No word has meaning on its own in a vacuum. You can't say that word to somebody with zero English experience and expect that by its euphony the person will recognize the sounds as being racist. That's total ignorance. On top of that, black scholars have explained the use of that word by black people themselves as a means of them re-inventing the word and changing the meaning to something positive.

As a teacher of Cultural Studies with an interest in history, I respect your willingness to patiently discuss the baggage associated with the N-word. I also I am intrigued by the cyber-black-face of that Counter Strike team. That wouldn't go over well if they actually donned the makeup (see "The Real World" controversy). This is real stuff and as an older SC2 player, I have been patiently waiting for this community to grow up. This is a step in the right direction.

Just because he is on the stream doesn't mean that he's free to do whatever he likes. For example on the Live Stream link on TL, Idra would probably (?) be linked to as "EG.Idra" as opposed to just "Idra". Secondly and I am not sure if this is true but his twitch.tv page might have the EG name on there somewhere. More importantly, as a "public figure" he needs to conduct himself in a more professional manner. It's the same with any athlete. If Lebron James played starcraft 2 and streamed himself calling people fa---t, then you can bet that he'd get in a lot of trouble even if he's not doing anything even remotely related to basketball.

... But I also feel that since Orb didn't say these things during the time he was with EG, that they are walking on a fine line by firing him. On one hand, he didn't say these offensive words while casting for EG master cup but he also lied and got extremely defensive by posting on reddit/twitter. Although Alex's posts makes it seem as if they had the intention of letting him go once they determined that he actually said what he said, in which case I think this was a slight over-reaction because I think he's a decent caster and had potential/could have changed or at least worked on his PR to make it not-this-awful. Oh well, I'm sure this isn't the end for orb; he'll probably just have to start working back up slowly again.

The word "nigger" is an automatic career-ender for a public figure in almost all situations of use. The word "faggot" is not. Oh so one is more "acceptable" than the other? How do you think homosexuals feel about what you just said? It is probably true but that doesn't mean it's the way it should continue to be. It's pretty obvious that saying faggot should be no more acceptable then saying nigger. And if you fire an employee for saying one of them you have to fire another employee for saying the other one. ESPECIALLY when you(Alex) rant on about how you believe it is so wrong to utter such terms.

Now, blacks do call their friends "nigga" sometimes but that word is different. My black friends will say to me "what up my nigga?" and I'll say it to them if I know they're cool with it. But I wouldn't say "my nigga" to a black guy I didn't know. That can be said for about any friendly slur. I think it's sad how touchy this 'mature' community is becoming.

I was actually hoping that the community would grow up after this, but you're probably right. The anonymity of the Internet brings out the worst in people, and it's about time that we stop tolerating it. This incident probably won't fix the community overnight, but I've always felt the racist/homophobic/sexist/generally disrespectful part of gaming culture that refuses to go away is the single biggest limiting factor on the growth of professional gaming.
