While this thread is labeled "DotA2", this is in fact a community thread first. Many of the users in the TL LoL subforum have been playing as friends for over a year now, so it makes logical sense that they would want to play other games together.
Do not compare DotA2 to LoL, you will get banned.
TL LoL veterans know what is expected. Newcomers be warned.

Ya, because another big distinction is that you can also cast spells while ethereal. Zhonya's is just a 3 second 'timeout.'

I don't think comparing items to LoL items will show what needs to be shown properly. For example, buriza could be compared to IE, but IE is actually good - comparing in this manner would make players go buriza far sooner that it should be gotten (if at all). Another example which might be a little more controversial, Armlet is similar to atmogs in its use - makes you tankier, while all giving you damage. Its simply cheaper and with a few side effects. Perhaps a tier list of items and a description of what they do? This will probably need to be split into carry/semi/support, with notes saying stuff like don't get battle fury on ranged, only go armlet if you are str, ect.

I think the point of comparing is that lol players have a list of items memorized that give certain stats and have certain abilities. Being able to compare new items to the list they have memorized already is a huge shortcut. Afterwards its a great idea to say wether the item is good or not, but just being able to say Ded is like IE only not worth buying is HUGE cuz now I know there is a big damage item that has crit.
Same as how manta is like a PD- movespeed, attackspeed, only instead of crit you get to have a threesome.

Although Armlet Sniper is pretty hilarious.

Slardar armlet is pretty good afaik. But then, there may be a reason that the game is over the instant I pick slardar

gonna add more stuff to my item post as i think of more comparisons.

Also- why do you guys keep saying press shift before doing stuff- like with the courier someone said f2 shift qwe. Best I can figure I can get my items by pressing f2 ed.
Semirelated question- With someone like sand king- I channel ult then blink dagger right?
|
shift queues up commands - its like saying cast q, then when that is finished, cast w, then when that finishes, cast E.
Yes, and you can shift R+blink - you will channel your ulti, then blink into the team when that finishes.
|
now is it press shift- r blink release shift or
Press and release shift- r blink.
|
the former - any command while shift is held will be done after your other commands are finished.

Because DotA 2 comes from a War3 map, a lot of commands you hold self-evident in Starcraft 2 and the like function the same in DotA 2. Ctrl+# adds things to a control group. If you have multiple kinds of units in a control group, you can hit Tab to cycle through them. You can shift-queue commands and set rally points (for example, Boots of Travel to a creep and then shift-click somewhere so you immediately start walking after teleporting). etc.
|
And it goes upon the release of shift? IE i can shift R-click for the blink then hold shift for like 5 seconds till the time is right, release and do the killings?
|
No, they go straight away if there is nothing already queued up. If you are standing still doing nothing at all, then shift+R+blink, you will immediately start channelling your ult.
|
Shift queuing works the same way as in WC3, BW, SC2, etc...

How much gold do you lose when you die?

It's a little more complicated than that.
There's unreliable gold and reliable gold. You can only lose from your pool of unreliable gold. This is everything but kill bounties. Reliable gold you will never lose. This comes from kill bounties.

Additionally, gold gained from hero kills/assists is considered "reliable" gold, and cannot be lost on death. Unreliable gold (normal gold gain over time, gold from cs, etc.) is spent before reliable gold when buying items.

Tonights feature:
Queue as 4 people, find a pub guy who is like "Wanna go again, lich?" (dno who was lich that game)
We invite him into our party, get him to tell us that he played dota for 6 years and that we seem pretty solid for beginners... just to tell him we come from LoL. He kinda went on a short "LEAGUE SO EASY" rant and realized he was outnumbered. GG.
I'm not 100% sure if the item comparison makes sense because of some basic differences.
e.g.: -Support items in DotA >> support items in LoL. -MRes is nothing you see people getting a lot. You mostly get that BKB for your 10s perma-cleanse. -One of the strong agil carry items (butterfly) gives also evasion so it's kinda a defensive items if you fight physical dps. -A lot of the big items also have defensive stat bonuses in them so they also give offensive/defensive stats (e.g. Aghanims/Sheepstick) which makes "real defensive items" less common/usefull.
I'd rather say we try and do a list which basically describes some commonly used items on which roles and why they are being used. Like, I probably build most of my heroes badly atm but I can totally get away with a rather narrow choice of items.
e.g. it doesn't matter whether I'm WR or Furion, Sheepstick/Force staff/Mekansm (or MKB / Orchids) are all good items. It doesn't matter whether I'm drow, sniper or AM, Manta/Butterfly are stronk.
