And America gets outraged... at the advertiser???
http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/11/showbiz/all-american-muslim-lowes/index.html?npt=NP1
(CNN) -- Lowe's has pulled its advertising from the reality TV show "All-American Muslim," which the retail store called a "lightning rod." "All-American Muslim" is an eight-part series that follows five Muslim families living in Dearborn, Michigan.
... The conservative Florida Family Association, which is pushing advertisers to drop "All-American Muslim," cheered Lowe's decision. The group called the TLC show "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values." Read the rest on CNN. Fair use and all that copyright jazz.
How is this Lowe's fault? It what crazy world do we live in were bigoted group make advertiser pull ads off a show, and we...get outraged at the advertiser??? Thats it. I'm outraged at Lowes, Home depot, and everyone else who isn't advertising on Sister Wives. bigots, all of them. Really, the only mistake Lowes made was advertising on this show to start with. So because of this misplaced angry, no other big name advertiser will every make this mistake again.
Loews is a place were I buy home supplies from, not take moral stance on hot button issues. Which is all well because then Loews would have to charge more, and I would just go to Home depot. The root problems here are the bigoted groups. And that's who America should be outraged at.
But I guess it generates more news and outrage to blast Loews then conservative Florida Family Association, Common sense and reason be damned.
UPDATE:
EDIT: It's pretty common in everyday speak to use the words bigoted and racist interchangeable. It's kinda like how people call the US a democracy when it's technical a constitutional republic. No one care but that one guy at the party who didn't say anything the whole night till someone said the magic word.
I would change the title, but I don't know how.

Racist? What does Islam have to do with race?
|
Why are you so strange, OP? They're outraged because Lowe's pulled it in reaction to the FFA threat. This is turn-coat behaviour. Not only that, but it's giving in to bigotry. I don't see how you don't understand this simple fact. You may say they're just a corporation, but hey, where I spend my money seems to be one of the biggest forms of democracy these days.
|
There's a "Conservative Florida Family Association"? I actually live in Florida, maybe I'll take the time to go fireb- I mean, uh, write them a nasty letter.
|
Just so people understand as well - Home Depot pulled ads out and are not subjected to the same scrutiny.
Basically, sucks to be Lowes.

If the OP re-wrote that to "bigoted", would you be appeased?

Islam isn't a race.
Lowe's is a private company, let them advertise when and where they want for whatever reasons they want. Like the OP says, they don't exist to make political statements, but to improve their bottom line.

If I remember correctly, all of the members of the show are of Arabic descent (or like 9.9/10ths of them)
But yeah technically you're correct

I can't follow your line of reasoning, OP. A small neo-conservative group from Florida put pressure on a large national chain to pull their funding from a TV show that is meant to increase tolerance toward Muslims by showing that they're just normal people because the neo-conservative group believes that all Muslims are evil terrorists looking to undermine American democracy. Of course we should be angry at Lowes, they reversed their decision to support an entire culture of underrepresented and unfairly reviled people simply because a small group of extremist Christians decided they don't want people to know that Muslims are hard working, caring, and altogether normal human beings.
|
hahah its good to know Lowe's can be scared off by the "Florida Family Association". Are they all American's practising the Muslim religion? Wonder if they would do the same if it was Christianity in question here...
|
"propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."
Are they too peacefull or normal?I think they want it down because of the idea that they generally try to convey that arabs "just aren't like us westerners",Xenophobia not racism.
Sad to see the U.S spiralling down because of these "loud" self righteous minorities that the corporate media always devotes attention to.

Kinda telling that you chose to call them racists at the start. I mean this is more a religious issue, not the specific races of people involved. Not even mentioned are if these are white muslims, black muslims, muslims of middle-eastern descent. You're really saying here -- I've made up my mind, come join me on my opinion.
Consider if a show that follows five Orthodox Jewish families around another city. A Muslim group called Minnesota Servants of Allah pushes advertisers off the show. You come here, make a post calling the muslim group racists? Bigoted?
Religious issues in the US is still a hotly debated subject. The labels you're placing here are unfounded. Racist US group forces advertiser to pull ads. Oh please, I think I need some air. Let's call all the groups I like compassionate, fair-minded, and normal, and everything I don't racist.

No. This has nothing to do with race whatsoever. Your "racist" group even points out what they have issue with is Islam not their Arabic descent.
Religious issues are rife in America, but this conservative group is free to express what they want. Funny how free speech applies even when people's beliefs conflict with yours.

Islam is a danger to our "American" liberties according to this org?
What a joke, at no point even 1,000 years from now will Islamic peoples be a majority nor have the voting bloc to change any of our rather secular and mundane governance philosophy.
Get real.

Pretty much, I don't even know what constitutes being a Jew other than one who follows Judaism. But people seem to label them as some sort of entirely distinct race.

it's surprising nobody has done something similar with jersey shore then...

Rather have censorship than propaganda? (not to say it even is propaganda, since I havn't watched it) This logic is completely flawed. Censorship and propaganda is meant to go hand in hand.
|
You forgot the most important part of the news article.
"This is NOT about standing up for All-American Muslim - This is about Standing Up Against Bigotry and Hatred in this Country Founded on Peace, Justice, and Equality. Let's Stand United against Bigotry," Amen-McDermott wrote.
For fuck's sake, you have religious nutbags protesting everywhere and these guys who seem to be properly assimilated Americans with arabic ancestry and muslim faith are not allowed to make a show on the grounds that they are terrorists. Yes I'm twisting words but as a neighbor of the US I'm getting pretty damn tired of hearing the words Freedom and Terrorism. I've been hearing that crap for 10 years and it's as boring as checking the weather channel!
If anything they should welcome this series as a show of good faith from the Muslim community, to show everyone that they aren't all bad people and most importantly:
TO MOVE ON!!!!
Stay stagnant, America....

What show and why do I suddenly care about anything that is or isn't on TLC?
