I just picked my Cherry MX Red today and, like you, I love it. The only exception is the key layout. I hate this old-school layout with the huge enter key and shortened shift key. Is it possible to change the key layout or perhaps remove the \ key and use a normal length shift key?

Define normal, ANSI? That'd require desoldering the switches, and even that might not work if the board has a plate.

Are you in Japan or Europe? Prices vary quite a lot through regions. Get a tenkeyless, CM quickfire rapid or TK, leopold fc700, maybe even filco will be cheap enough if you are in Japan. Switch wise, brown is a good middle of the road switch. Otherwise just read guides and get what you think you will like.

They are pretty nice. The pro is the worst of the CM boards, its still functional but I would try find a quickfire rapid or TK. Also if you really want to cut costs, try find one of the cherry keyboards. They are called g80-3000 or something like that and should be quite a lot cheaper than those options.

The regular grey casing can be a little ugly in some people's opinions, and the font they use for the keys get a lot of criticism but cosmetics aside it's a great buy. you can also purchase the Stealth line which uses a jet black case and sleeker looking keys for a little more. The QFR Reds also uses the black casing.
