You generally want to have a fan on it. Passive cooling isn't really good for overclocking. It's for completely quiet stuff. But yeah, the retail intel cooler is pretty damn loud, closer to a graphics card in acoustics than a decent aftermarket CPU cooler. And once you OC, it's going to run hotter, which means max noise more often. It's not just noise, but pitch. They're all around shitty coolers.

It does go straight to the game if SC2 isn't already running however... Just wondering why this could be. Did I miss something in the newer patch notes? Do I have some settings different? Not a big deal just annoying having to transfer all the replay files I want to see into the SC2 replay folder. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Installing an aftermarket solution was much more involved (Xigmatek Gaia), though not particularly difficult. The 212+ stock fan is a piece of shit, everyone knows that. The box cooler has a shitty plastic mounting thing that likes to either not stay in all the way, or fall off.

That $20 Zalman will be quieter than stock AMD and maybe even a little better cooling, but you might as well spend $10 more to get something capable enough to handle a "modest overclock" and lower noise levels.

I still wouldn't get it over the Gaia seeing as the Evo's fan goes up to 2000RPM vs 1500. Actually, if you can get a Gelid Tranquillo for about the same price, that would be the best choice. But it usually costs about ~$10 more and the $10 is not justified over the Gaia - it really is only marginally better. It does, however, supposedly have a hydro-dynamic bearing fan so maybe longer lifespan - also you get a 5yr warranty from Gelid but honestly it doesn't really matter. If something breaks, it's likely going to be the fan - and would you rather waste time with warranty and maybe have to uninstall the heatsink & ship it back for $10 or just buy another 120mm fan and be done with it?

Nice, thanks for these input, but damn memory express doesn't seem to carry the Gaia nor Tranquillo.

I don't think the online store carry those Gaia or Tranquillo since a search did not find anything.

Yeah the Zalman CNPS10X Performa or the Quiet for $20-25 are great deals. It's too bad the Venomous X-RT is OOS, for $35 it was a complete steal. Scythe Yasya, Ninja, and Mine should be ok too if your case can fit them. Almost everything looks out of stock though. EDIT: The Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 Pro seems to be in stock everywhere and is $31. It's slightly worse at cooling than most of the above (edit: well, not really; depends on which review you look at; within margin of error I guess) but depending on what you're looking for (if low noise is #1 goal) I'd probably go for it.

I'm sure i can fit almost any size coolers, my chassis is a storm sniper so its no biggie. upgrading with a z77 board along with a 3570k (whoops.) I really want a quiet system when its idle(i.e browsing the web) but when its oc i'm gonna need to have the fans spinning alot more.

Any halfway un-retarded BIOS makes it easy to control CPU cooling fan by temps. Depending on your mobo, you can also control other fans by temps, but unless it has useful sets of sensors, you're better off with a controller usually for everything else. Unless you just want a single set speed, that is.
