I have shift on one of my mouse buttons.
I put the money in the jacket, and the jacket on the kangaroo, and now he's hopping away!

while what you speak of is certainly relevant for you, it is not true for the rest of the world, as evidenced by all the different variations everyone else is doing

there is always something to be learned by how others do things and how you can incorporate their ideas into your own

I used to have control on a thumb button when I had a deathadder, but it broke 4 weeks after I bought it so now I play with a kinzu (feels much better in my hand too) and it has no thumb buttons.

I don't think there's much of a difference in my play with/without faster access to control key.

I have my forward and back buttons bounded as control groups 8 and 9 respectively. I find it saves time with upgrades and other tech buildings.

I bind random pylons around the map to my 9 control group which I set to one of my mouse keys so I can easily double hit that and warp in to the nearest pylon to my army.

I use my 2 deathadder buttons for screen hotkeys, probably my favorite use of them.

I use the thumb buttons on my mice for control and shift. Makes group creation/management much simpler as it doesn't require your left hand to hold the control and shift key while hitting a number. It's a much less awkward movement and really helps out people with smaller hands.

Note, when I'm shift-queueing commands or selecting all units of the same type I still use the left shift and control keys on the keyboard, as using the mouse buttons while executing actions that require precision reduces mouse accuracy (as many people in this thread have already mentioned.)

I use the forward & back buttons on my Logitech Mx 518 for control groups 7&8, and middle mouse button as group 9. That leaves me 1, 2, 3, and 4 in comfortable reach which I use to macro. Usually set up something like:

1 - Nexus(es) for easy Chronoboosting
2 - First Gateway, then first tech structure (Stargate or Robo)
3 - Second tech structure (Stargate or Robo)
4 - Forges. Fourges. I'm clever.
7 (Forward) - Main body of army like Zealots, Stalkers, Archons if I have them.
8 (Back) - Support units like Templar, Void Rays, Colossi, etc.
9 - Supplementary unit like a Warp Prism

5, 6, 0 - Not used. Might start putting a forward pylon on 5 though.

I'm with the opinion that too much going on with the mouse will lower mouse accuracy, but hearing about putting a control group on there for like an obs or something sounds like something I'm going to try out.

I got 2 buttons on my death adder and ive tried to use them but yeah, just taking the pressure off the left side of my mouse to hit a button i lose my mouse accuracy. I don't use them for anything now actually, just buttons that do nothing.

Used to use them for observer and proxy pylon control groups, nowadays I just don't feel the necessity to do either as I have gotten a lot faster.
