Hey guys, so I just decided to seriously switch over from WoW to SC2 and I've been learning a lot about the game over the past month or so. One thing I haven't been able to find very much info on is what players use their gaming mice buttons for. I searched teamliquid and couldn't really find what I was looking for.
Coming from an MMO I of course had a multi button mouse. In specific, I use the Logitech G700 but it really doesn't matter what mouse you use. I'm just looking for theories and philosophies for what works best in SC2 as a mouse button.
You see in WoW it was easy for me, I put most of my instant cast abilities on my mouse so that they never interfered with movement on my left hand using WASD. Then I put most of my casted abilities and some less used instants around WASD. However, for SC2 I'm new and lack the experience to know what goes best.
Recently I've been experimenting using my 4 thumb buttons as my army and specific units in it (like colossi, sentries, ht, etc) however I've recently begun thinking that this might be a mistake. My thinking is that it would be quicker and more accurate to combo army/unit selection from my left hand (using 1-4) and their attack/move order with my mouse.
So that's left me thinking what should I use my mouse buttons for? Snap to locations like F5-8? Should I use them for unit producing structures like my Robo/Stargates so I can quickly combo them with the unit I want to build on my left hand? Is there something else I'm missing? I mean I have 13 buttons on this mouse and I don't know what to use them all for. Those of you with multi-button mice, what do you your mouse buttons for?
I'm just trying to refine my control before these keybinds become muscle memory like it was for me in WoW and I'm trying to break bad habits way down the road. Thanks for your help in advance and I'm sorry if this has already been asked, I swear I searched multiple times and multiple ways.

I don't use the buttons on my death adder because I feel it would be gimmicky.

I use them for the 9 and 0 control groups and put queens and hatches on those to free up the other hotkeys for units, overlords and buildings which have upgrades on them.

This.
Also, using your mouse buttons would reduce your mouse accuracy if you're pressing it and aiming at something at the same time

As far as I know no pro gamer uses a mouse with more than 3 used buttons. It's not necissary.

Don't use buttons on your mouse, it will probably slow down your mouse movements and generally distract you.

Back in my unfortunate days of playing WoW, I used my extra mouse buttons for binds too, and was wondering how I could make use of them in SC2, but I actually didn't find anything I disliked about the SC2 bind collection. I rebound my base key from backspace to tilde and rebound patrol from P to Q and was pretty happy with everything else. I use one of the buttons to enter my password instantly, and that's about it.

Hmm... I've been noticing that pro's seem to stick to smaller/faster, what seem like more FPS styled mice for SC2. Perhaps it's time to sell this monster and break out the old Razer Lachesis...

This is exactly why I was thinking having my army bound to my mouse was a bad idea.

i have forward and back buttons on the side, i use them when watching replays to speed up, slow down the rep.
i use the middle mouse button (click it down) to pause
:D

on my steelseries xai; i use my back/forward mouse buttons for 2 control groups for obs;
sometimes switch 1 for a warp prism hot key.
|
I use an intellimouse so... yea

Backward mouse button = base camera thingy (backspace is its original hotkey). I recently made a new hotkey setup, and forgot to include that. Made my life misery for a game. I realised I used it ALOT as terran. for ez fast mules to building crap.

The only mouse buttons I use for SC are left and right click. Everything else goes on the keyboard.
|
I use mouse5 for like DTs or phoenix sometimes.
|
i never tried it but it seems like it might be useful to put the control key on the mouse because i have a hard time streatching my hand from control to the 8 9 or 0 control group
|
With my left mousebutton I can select my units and builds. I can also use it to build units, when klicking on them while selecting a building(Which I never do, since keyboard is much faster). With my right mousebutton I can send units and attack stuff. Maybe a bit gimmicky for some of you, but I can also use my mousewheel to zoom in and out
|
I just use the back button for the base camera

:D That is an amazing idea. Never even thought of that!

I use mouse4 for my main base location and mouse5 for my natural. Doesn't affect my mouse pointing at all.

I don't use my mouse buttons for anything. Due to the 1 action 1 button law there isn't many things you could make your mouse buttons that would really improve your efficiency. If anything it'll probably decrease your efficiency in the sense that you won't be as maneuverable with your keyboard hand, and if your ever playing without the mouse it'll be really weird.
So my suggestion is don't use it as it won't increase your speed by much anyway.
