I use the middle mouse for base camera switching. It's OP, and I recommend it to everyone. I remapped control group 0 to space, and the old space function is now back mouse button. Does not cut down on mouse accuracy once you get used to it, and adds functionality to the keyboard. Other than that, I don't see any other use for mouse buttons. You don't want to be binding spells like EMP or forcefield to your mouse.

The two sides buttons on my deathadder are just set to Alt+F4 and Windows key to close and minimize programs quickly. Everyone who uses my mouse always seems to hit the Alt+F4 button by accident all the time, closing what the had open, but I never ever ever have the problem. My thumb is always hovering over it in a game of starcraft naturally, but I haven't hit it by accident once.

Might change it to something for starcraft sometime, but I'm not sure what I would consistently use it for. Maybe a camera hotkey, but I'm already so used to using the F keys for that. Maybe 0 so I can ctrl + button 4/5 for an accessible hotkey for drops or something.

I recently (month or two) switched to using the Darkgrid hotkey setup, which has it recommended to putting you Bases/Production on the forward/backward mouse buttons. I was skeptical at first but it really is nice now that I'm used to it, and it never interferes with my mouse movement at all.

The only thing that sucks about it, is now when I'm at a buddies house I cant play if his mouse doesn't have those buttons, since it's just too ingrained in me to use those to macro now >.<
I can take that responsibility.

I know a Zerg player who used to bind his Queens onto his mouse keys. It worked, but he has since stopped doing so. It's perfectly okay to use your mouse keys if you want to, but I feel that abstaining from doing so would be the easiest way to play.

Luckily my mouse has a small wireless USB chip that can be stored in the battery compartment and it saves all my driver settings on board so if any of my friends had SC2 I could go play it at their house. Problem is all my friends play consoles... It's handy for switching between my laptop/desktop though...

This darkgrid setup sounds interesting, I was thinking that bases/production shouldn't interfere with accuracy at all. I'm thinking setting my thumb buttons to 7-0 for Nexus/Robo/Stargate/Whatever.

i strongly advise you to simply learn how to use the default hotkeys for sc2, and only use your mouse for left click and right click. this game functions nothing like wow, and it would be a bad idea for you to try and teach yourself to control it the same way as wow.

what most people do afaik is learn the default hotkeys and then slowly and slightly edit specific things to other keys just for comforts sake

i doubt u will find a pro gamer who uses their mouse for anything other than the left and rick click. this is not an MMO, this is an RTS, and your gonna have to learn to start from the bottom of the totem pole if you wanna be serious with this.

best of luck to you, i hope you enjoy sc2

I don't use any of the extra buttons on my mouse because I simply feel like it isn't necessary. I can reach 1-7 comfortably, and I could probably rebind 8-0, but I never need that many control groups, it simply isn't necessary in most games. Honestly, I feel like most of the different keyboard set-ups (grid/darkgrid/whatever) are just superfluous, because the default set up is already so nice.

Base camera. Just wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too awkward to go to my backspace and i've already occupied my top left keys.

i use shift control and backspace on the 3 mouse buttons i have.

shift and control in sc2 for making groups/ camera locations.

in other games (fps, rpg whatever) i use the shift for running and control for crouching and backspace for lying down, so my hand never has to move much.

I use a thumb button for the "base camera" binding. Allows you to hit the thumb button while holding down shift+v for larva injection.

I use them as ctrl and shift as well, I have really big hands and have never been good at contorting them to hit ctrl+1 etc, so it really speeds up my play. Also it allows me to reach keys that are further away as i can move my whole hand over if necessary

IMO it's not a gimmick, i've just moved the ctrl and shift keys from one place to another.

This.

Also, using your mouse buttons would reduce your mouse accuracy if you're pressing it and aiming at something at the same time

This. You may be able to use mouse buttons / razer naga's in WoW because mouse accuracy doesn't really matter, but in high level sc2 it is everything and pressing buttons with your mouse fingers will reduce your accuracy. Even if it's by a small amount .

i have two mouse buttons by my thumb, and i have one as the cancel hotkey and another as a camera location, but the only one i really use routinely is for cancel. I actually love having cancel on my mouse because it helps not to freak out and possibly mishit the esc button if a mad ling runby happens and attacks something i just started (i play toss). besides that, I think the normal hotkeys on keyboard are best.
