Edit: Trying to use mouse buttons for an RTS is not going to help you improve, it will just make you hit a skill cap more quickly. While it may seem that your skill is increasing quickly, all that is really happening is that you are exhausting the small gimmick that allows you to do certain mechanics better than before. If you would simply improve using standard hotkeys and the keyboard you probably will have slower skill increase, but much more reliable and you will find no skill ceiling other than your own determination.

Maybe it is or maybe it isn't, but I suspect there is a reason we don't see Professional players using mouse buttons. It's not "cheating" if you can straight up bind the buttons in the SC2 client. Unlike grey territory, like mouse scroll to Left Click. And as for the mouse scroll, pretty sure Stephano and Nestea altered their mouseware/drivers to be able to do this. So they're going beyond simply binding mouse buttons in the SC2 client.

The only way to play at a professional level without breaking the rules is to only use 3 mouse buttons which have to be "Mouse button 1, 2, 3" which can be bound in game through hotkeys, which would make it legal. Playing SC2 with a Naga or some other bullshit mouse is just you trying to get a little bit past your skill plateau, but it won't do much for you anyway Nestea/Stephano use mouse scroll to left click infested terrans and there's been no controversy about it so far afaik.

Can anybody confirm that this is true? It's not that I don't believe you it's just that if it is true this has a huge impact on whether I continue using my G700 or look for a trade or something on craigslist for a Deathadder or something more RTS friendly. I see what you mean by artificially increasing my skill cap though and while I'm sure you're right I'll probably continue to use those 3 buttons at least. I don't think that having them set as Production facilities like my Nexus, Robo and Stargate would ever cause accuracy issues since I won't be controlling units at that time anyway and when I think about it, once I get used to the system it makes more sense to select a building with my mouse buttons hit the unit I want to build on the keyboard and then right click to rally. I don't know but that still seems more logical to me than setting them to 4,5,6 or something further out of the way. Most everything else is standard for me except a few things like building immortals, blink and other stuff put at awkward places to hit quickly on default imo. Edit: I can't find anything on MLGs rules about limiting mouse buttons and they even let you submit your mouse beforehand so they can install drivers. http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/news/starcraft-2-rules-and-settings GSLs a no go too: http://www.gomtv.net/2011gslsponsors3/news/64582 Looks like the two biggest pro tournament holders don't enforce mouse button policies... Anybody that can dig up some other stuff? I checked Dreamhack 2011's rules and didn't see anything about equipment and IEM's rules were hard to find. No offense but it's looking like this 'tournaments don't allow more than 3 mouse buttons' thing is a thing of the past or misinformation. Somebody is more than welcome to prove me wrong though, I just can't see to find anything to confirm this.

I've got Shift as my middle mouse scroll button. I've got Ctrl as one of them. I've got one of the buttons as 0 - all my hatches. I've got all my queens on 9 - on another button. I've got backspace as one of them. (for injecting) Edit: Spelling.

I also use my middle mouse button to scroll short distances, as I find it easier than moving the mouse to the edge of the screen.
