A bit late as I was traveling for the past two weeks.
Previous Editions + Show Spoiler +
Q: What is this thread?
A: General purpose, SC2 discussion thread.
Q: What should I be posting about? A: Basically, anything you want to talk about but aren't sure if it warrants a topic of its own. Heard a rumour you want to share? A new video? A question you are sure is super common but can't find the answer to via searching? A brilliant new idea that you want to vet, to make sure it's really as brilliant as you think it is?
This is the place.
Note: Posting standards will not be as high as if you were to make a new thread, but pointless spam will still not be tolerated. I have seen threads like these work out alright on other sites (for other games) so I figured, why not give it a shot? It's possible there's not really enough content for something like this to exist at this point in time, but no harm then, it will just die on its own.

No one made a thread for the Latin America Battle.net Invitational, I am lazy so instead of making one I will ask someone to make one.
Thanks <3
At least 2 brazilians will be there, one of them being Reason, Catz will be there as well.
Anyway, who can make a thread for us?

So how about those infestors? I feel like nobody uses mutas against terran on ladder any more

Is scouting and upgrades overrated?????

On August 09 2011 12:52 HuKPOWA wrote: Is scouting and upgrades overrated?????
Yes and no. On one hand, it's almost useless to scout if what you see isn't going to change what you do. Those extra resources can be used to get either better scouting tools faster or move your strategy forward earlier (expands, timing push, etc.).
As far as upgrades are concerned, they are an investment, just like tech and economy. If you can stay alive long enough to utilize an upgrade advantage over your opponent, then they are worth the cost.

Note: + Show Spoiler +I posted this in the July thread just a few minutes before the August thread came up. Hope it's not bad to repost in such a case, but I doubt anyone will see the post in the old thread.
Is there a coaching thread/forum where people evaluate coaches, and coaches advertise, looking for students?
There's all kinds of random crap in this forum, but it's free coaching, which usually implies waiting around and not being sure if you'll ever get coached.
I'm willing to pay up to $25 per hour (2 hours per week), for high-masters coaching, but would like a way to easily compare different coaches. And I would definitely want to see a VOD(s) of the person coaching before hiring. It would be so cool if a website organized all that, with ratings, etc. (if this doesn't exist, and someone out there reading this is looking for a side-project, do this! )

I already responded to your question Zergoaster. Look in the sponsored forum.

Well stop making 60 marines every TvZ then

I don't know about evaluations, but there is: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=252349
They might replays up somewhere, maybe worth asking them if you're interested? Or I guess you could always make a thread and see who responds.
I just played two Protosses, both on Typhon Peaks, both who tried to relocate their nexus after I destroyed theirs originally. We didn't really trade armies, so it's really weird--do they think that I'm just going to sit at their old base and twiddle my fingers? I mean, it's happened with other races too, it's just that it's happened to me recently with Protoss, which is why I'm pinpointing them. Sorry, but it's just really annoying...
|
Well I mean I basically play wackamole in ZvT. Every time Terran shows up at a expansion I'm making another one some where. Unless I'm using it was a decoy to go kick their natural while they kill a third
I don't know what to tell you. I mean If Protoss just sits there they lose. In fact they're already behind if there are marines and tanks and all sorts of Terran shit sitting in their natural on top the wreckage of a nexus. But if they don't expand again.. what plan could they have? One base colossus and pray you forget how to make vikings?
Or maybe I'm seeing it wrong.

Why do Wolf/DOA say that immortals are good against immortals (reference: DRG vs Inca, game 2)? It takes like 15 shots...
|
I uh.. I missed them saying that. I don't know I guess they meant it takes both of them a long time to kill each other so they can target other things without worrying about the immortal so they cancel each other out.. I guess
I have no idea wtf they meant.

does anyone find it annoying that you fall down in the ladder so fast now, for not playing the game. I sign off at 2am eastern time as a level 23 then by 5pm the next day i've gone down to level 40 in the division. I find this frustrating when trying to climb the ladder. Its almost as if you have to play endlessly and never sleep.

You were placed in a new division. Everyone has no points at the start so the division will be incredibly volatile for a few more weeks. I've gone from (qualifying) 3rd to 8th to 4th to 12th to 5th to 33rd and I think I'm somewhere between 20 and 30 right now.
It'll slow down just as drastically soon.

This is all true.
However, later on in the last season, I was really active and finally took #1 from some guy who played less than 100 wins (i had like 250) and when he finally noticed. after not playing for weeks, he played a few games and with his huge bonus pool shot way past me -_- I worked to hard to "catch up," meaningless as it may be, but then bonus pool worked against me in short order. All that meant is that my division rank was #2 instead of 1, but it's that bone for which some of us slave away.

I've been seeing a few high level pvz's where they cannon rush the zerg natural then just play the rest of the game out. Does it help that much? I just feel with few pylons and a cannon for them to just cancel the hatch. I was just wondering what everyone else thinks about it.
|
That sucks Ansinjunger. I've had that happen to me before. Look on the bright side, at least the person that was ranked 1st in your divis didn't have a full thousand points more than anyone else. (It was NOT masters lol)

I'm forced to get fast roaches, delay my economy and I can't expand. You are set back quite a lot of minerals early on but are completely safe from attack while cannon cheesing and afterwards you can afford to expand and defend it. There's no real downside to cannon cheese. I mean if your opp responds perfectly they can force you up your ramp but a stargate followup...
Cannons in zergs natural you're ahead.

I play with no particular BO at all and have trouble getting into Master. Do you think that taking time to learn some solid BO will make my way to Master easier? (Was Diamond from release)

Yes, even if you are zerg that is a good idea. One (solid) build order for each of the matchups would be perfect.
|
If you're zerg having several build orders is required. A roach ling all in can only get you so far, especially with the popularity of stargate openings!
|

I think we don't agree on the meaning of "Buid Order" =P
Even if you are Terran, you can always open blue flame in TvZ, but then if you see roachs, you should know how to transition to marauders, but that transition is part of the metagame when using that build order. Your push at 8-9 is there so you can scout as well, if mass mutas, mass marines, if mass roachs, some marauders etc. But if you have more than 1 build order, then you have to understand a broader scope of the metagame and it makes things even more difficult.
So I'd recommend following only 1 build order, then you can understand better all the possibilities and transitions that will be require for the different strategies people will use against your opening. So yeah, 1 build order, but still plenty of possibilities and that's exact why it's better to stick to only 1 build order, 1 is already hard enough.

Also unless they're going an MC style stargate opener chances are that holding a 2 base roach ling all-in after they've expo'd and gone stargate is very unlikely. As long as your roaches and lings clean up his initial gateway army, the reinforcement lings should easily be able to clean up, as a few void rays won't really help much. If he's smart he may attempt a base race but usually in that scenario if you can continually reinforce you win anyways.

I recommend you working on your mechanics. Zerg dont use tactical build orders because they are a responsive race.

Not particularly a Huk fanboi, but as far as foreigners go who is stronger? There's only 3 in my mind who are worth mentioning in that debate. Those being: Naniwa, Idra, Thorzain. I don't see any of those really being a clear favorite over Huk at the moment.
Absent their theoretical skills I feel there isn't even a debate as to who has the most achievements as of late.

Oh, returning back to this thread to post what I originally crawled in here to do.
Random question: When two identical units, in particular workers, attack each other what dictates who gets the killing blow? Assuming that both have equal vision, upgrades, etc.
This question arose from games where two scouting probes are attacking each other in synchronization(from appearances) yet one walks away the victor. Maybe it's possible to have simultaneous kills but I haven't seen it.
Obviously missle units can kill each other simultaneously, so I'm not too worried about that scenario.
My theory was that it had something to do with who had an attack command issued first even if both had to travel to attack, or maybe it was the last one to enter a straight line into combat loses, a la moving around terrain or reversing to attack the chasing probe.
If no one can provide an answer I'm totally up for testing this but I need a partner.

Hey! Will blizzard be at gamescom 2011? Thx the answers,

I'm a Random player who switched back to Terran recently. I started playing Random in September 2010, so I have been Random longer than I've been Terran. Unless you count Starcraft 1, where I was Terran.
Anyway, my experience as a Random player has made me a better Terran player overall. Just thought I'd share this tip in case you hit a plateau in your chosen race.

Is there anyway we can get the Barracks before Depot opening back? I feel it's hard to do any early pressure without 2 raxing and that just delays tech so bad if you do no damage. Whereas, a protoss can pressure no problem with one stalker against Terran and a zerg can poke in with an easy counter if you try to move out.

What happened to the Slayers jersey sale? It was a sponsored thread and then all of a sudden it disappeared.

After seeing the recent explosion of marine/hellion only style for pro-level TvZ, I have to wonder... where the hell are Terrans pouring all their gas? Mass upgrades? The number of Medivacs required to support that composition doesn't seem to be any higher than more "traditional" marine/tank composition. Or is this marine/hellion style just the most exploitative use of Terran mineral gathering rates through Mules to date?

Hi, I'm new to teamliquid, and to Sc2 in general. I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place to post this, but I recently I played an hour long pvz on Shakuras Plateau, in which i out-mined, out-produced, and in my personal opinion out played my zerg opponent, but I still lost. I'm really not sure what I did wrong so I was hoping someone here could take some time to review and give me some pointers? There was a point in the game where I had 2 more bases then he did, I was actually spending my money remarkably well(i think), normally in such long games I end up banking a few thousand minerals and gas. He ended up doing some weird combination of corruptors, roaches, zerglings, and infestors, while I was just doing what I've seen basically every protoss do, stalkers, sentrys, zealots, and colossus. I know he had 4 bases, but I took it upon myself to deny his 5th and 6th expansions, which I think I did with good success. I was hoping someone could download the replay and point out some mistakes I made, or perhaps things I could do better. By the end of the game I had like no probes to do anything really, and he said in all chat that he still had 6k banked. Heres the link

Protoss feels really UP lately... i really feel like other race casters are slightly better than HTs, and currently casters are the rage - especially infestors - so a lot of games are very frustrating... Toss should honestly see a buff to HT - something that makes feedback very slightly better... or gives them some kind of defense vrs ghosts/infestors...
Still carriers are a joke unit... PvP feels much more 4gate vrs defensive 3gate-robo on NA at least
PvZ is very ling/infestor heavy, or spam roaches. Mutas, for some reason, almost gone. Perhaps bc of forge FE allowing better cannon defense by mineral lines...
Still very under-used are warp prisms, carriers and motherships ;/ Slight buff to each would be good - especially mothership as Toss players have a single unit that is a total joke and almost completely unseen EVER

I agree. Protoss is so inflexible compared to terran and zerg. Terran has a mobile and high dps ground army that can instantly go into multi pronged attacks. Zerg can instantly tech switch and have such focused production to adjust to the game.
Might just be the meta game though, with all these new builds for terran and zerg being discovered. No high level protoss is having much success keeping up
bisu come to sc2 please, thanks

HuK is ACTUALLY very good... he has shown a PvT and a PvZ that is so strong (against a very good player) that he has made them look like poor players... This is actually kind of significant... LOL i guess u right... still.... the tech/time/resource it takes for a mothership...
99% of games you never see it
If someone mothership rushed me nowadays... i feel like it would be so BM LOL... kind of like planetary rush...
Mothership needs a buff sooooooooooooooooooooo bad LOL - Give armor and attack or - Give faster tech (make it not need fleet beacon) or - Give it lots of energy on spawn of lower cost of skills
Even if one of these are chosen i STILL doubt you pretty much EVER see mothers... LOL its just sad really b/c motherships are the coolest unit LOL

Eh ... META SHMETA
Real problem with Toss is that their base builds (say 9 pylon 12 gate) are a lot less versatile than similarly timed builds based on scout info...................
In fact... the mere fact that terrans can life/swap building add-ons allows them the versatility that protoss needs
- this may be true for Zerg too... i just don't know... i play toss about 5-6 hrs/day and no zerg LOL
|
In fact... to clarify further...
Toss can gather some sentries for STRONG potential FFs
Problem is terran can push on 2rax and end game if P misses FFs -If they scout well they can abandon 2rax and use add-ons for factories/starports for other deviations
Where if Toss misses clutch FFs, they just lose... ---------- You miss a FF by a block, say at your ramp, the Terran 2 rax force can just micro-step up and kill everything...
Really what it comes down to is the lack of possible openings for PvX and the RELAITIVELY lower flexibility in deviations........................
I'm actually fully aware that in lower league competition Protoss is easier since MACRO mistakes arent as devastating (b/c u can warp in ur derp derp floating-bad minerals)
Toss really does need a flexibility buff.... Terran needs a flex nerf.... Idk about zerg... i think they are pretty close to balanced... infestors feel strong... i think perhaps Zerg deservs a slight nerf to their fast expo viability... say make hatches 350 mins... -BFH also feels a little OP... the tech/cost is a bit low for their effectiveness... and this is pretty much solely TvZ

I want to expand on this since SOME players may harp on HUKs recent GSL results... a LOT of it has been PvP and as of right now... PvP is very coinflippy....
In other words... the edges are very slim in PvP and i'm not surprised at all to see some lesser-koreans take games off of HuK in PvP and neither should you...
Until there are some revoltions in PvP (and frankly PvX in general) PvP will continue to be fairly coin-flippy....

No high level protoss is having much success keeping up bisu come to sc2 please, thanks
ALSO!!!! You could be fairly right about 'meta game' influence.. but i think it genuinely has more to do with Protoss' lack of flexibility early/mid game.. In fact.. late game isn't very flexible either...
TBH... Toss feels very 'stiff' when it comes to builds/transitions. Again... i play about 6hrs/day and constantly attempt to build 80+ build oders.............
GM Toss genuine.... TW and NA and shurgprobnow Korea and NA zzzzzzzzzz
|
To be more insightful....................................................:
PvZ: meta feels very heavy towards going forge FE vrs an obvious FE for Zerg - Typical followup is Gate/Starport - Typical transition is Zeal/Archon w/ 3rd
PvT: meta feels pretty 2 base defense for Toss........ - HuK has show some pretty great 1gate/expo - Typical transition is into yet another Zeal/Archon against bioballs...................
Many players try to mix 'penix' into their play and IMO 'penix' are the future of PvX.............. life ability seems slightly under-used especially against Zerg infestors trying to neural parasite your archons/immo/collis - JUST LIFT THEM!!!!!!!
anyways, so with a little analysis, we can see that a very strong Toss opening involves a quick expo w/ solid defense (based on scouting) and transitioning into archon/zeal pushings and into 3rd bases.... If you look at timings of these.......... if you try to tansition into robo/colli either Zerg or Terran will, at this point, be SOOOOOOOOOOOOO proficient at producing ant-air units (lol collis) that your transition will feel very weak.... so WTF to do???? carriers??? mothership???? joke units for BM?!!?!

I'm playing several hours a day and invest all my time in reading strategies and watching replays but I can't figure PvZ out.
You need to expand to get a good macro, but at the same time you can't harass and scout. Blink stalker gets countered by mass lings/roaches, zaelot sentry pressure is extreme hard to do and not viable. Stargate/DT builds (two freaking economy heavy builds) are less strong due to preventive spore crawlers. Early third is not really defendable, generally expansion races with Zerg are not winnable. The deathball is not scary anymore but a joke to Infestors/broodlords/lings and the army is too slow to react to late scouted mutalisks.
I have no joy in playing PvZ anymore. PvP is completely stupid and a win doesn't make me happy. Only PvT is an interesting matchup. End of the line: I'll probably race switch to terran to be more flexible.
I don't think we will see lot of high quality protoss tournament wins any time soon and our race will slowly fade from GSL A/S.

I think one big thing is that both the Ghosts EMP and the Zerg's Fungal disable templars in a large area, ie they disable multiple templars with an instant cast. Assuming equal reaction speed that means 1 non-Protoss caster dies to feedback (provided the non-Protoss doesnt use the Aoe well enough, in that case the templar wont get anything off) and the templar and all units surrounding it will get EMP'd or fungalled, thus unable to participate for a bit (either trough lack of energy or being unable to cast and, most likely, getting fungalled again). This means templars have to be spread always, which gets hard when moving about since they are much slower then the rest and as such tend to clump up. I still think warp-prism use of templars (much like sc1) not for backdoor stormdrops but for jangbi-like drops would help Protoss immensely, altho it is ofcourse a very micro intensive move.

Is there a point at which you stop making probes/SCVs?
Is 22 per Town Hall (2 at each mineral patch = 16, 3 at each gas = 6) ok or should you just 4e/4s every 30 or so seconds the entire game?
|
There's about a +/- 20 worker count when you get into specifics but as a general rule 70 is a good number. It takes 24 workers to fully saturate mineral/gas at a base.
But specific race wise there are dependencies. Zerg makes a lot more workers or a lot less depending on personal style or the composition of your army. Terran can sacrifice scvs for supply ultra late game and replace them with mules.
And of course you stop making probes early if you're doing a timing attack.

I thought they had fixed the 'pause then leave' bug?
My opponent paused the game, left, but I still had the 'surrender' button instead of score screen, and mistakenly clicked it.
I got an error at the score screen, and now the game doesn't appear in my history.
Is that win lost forever?

I think the inflexibility of protoss stems from P really has to have a lot of sentries for forcefields to deal with roach hydra or bio ball. This really limits your options as far as tech in the beginning, since so much gas is being used.

After all, zerg won the king of the beta and the first two GSLs when people thought terran was totally broken overpowered, but it turns out zergs were just playing it wrong. I was trying to update my profile to include my favorite team in my posts (SlayerS), but was disappointed to find out that you can only select BW teams. Why can't we select SC2 teams? It's trivial and unimportant, but it would still be nice to have as an option.

Search the Website Feedback forum to find that same thing said a few times Yes, it would be nice to have that feature. But it's a pretty low priority for me at least. Especially with the youth of SC2.

Quick MMR question: Does it take into account inactivity? For example, if I stop playing when I was regularly being pitted against Masters players, would my inactivity be the cause for me being placed against a Platinum player in the placement match of the new season?
|
The Comprehensive SC2 Ladder Guide thread mentions in the post linked MMR reset if you are inactive for an entire season. Example (from post) I was masters in season 1 and entirely skipped season 2. I had to redo my 5 placement matches for season 3.
So if you're inactive for an entire season then your MMR will drop. I think. I don't know about lesser amounts of time (Like a month) but I don't believe your MMR is linked to activity. I don't have any official Blizzard/TL posts to back that up unfortunately.

Well, I can definitely tell you it has nothing to do with whom issed the atk-command first. I regularly win worker battles with my scouting SCV by running around the enemy base and suddenly attack move into the enemy worker's direction. I actually think there is no pattern to it. Whoever gets into attack range first (which sounds silly with melee units) gets off the first hit and wins (unless you are fighting a zerg = health regen).

Your MMR won't drop even if you are inactive a whole season. It will reset. It is different.
Your MMR won't drop if you are inactive, but innactivity does have to do with the whole system (matchmaking) in ways we are not sure, so you might face lower players because you are excessive inactive, yeah, it could be, but we don't know for sure.

I tried logging in the battle.net foruns and it says I don't have a valid SC2 license. I actually have 2 (in the same battle.net account/e-mail).
I thought it was a general bug, but some people are still posting in the foruns. Is someone bugged just like me or should I actually worry? ;_;
I am not in my gaming PC so I can't test if I can still log in the game, but if I go to account it says I have my 2 accounts + PTR, no problem.
Edit: I send a ticket and the guy said my 2 accounts are conflicting ;_;
I'll try to migrate one NA account to EU and see if that fixes it =/
Edit2: My NA account has just been removed and I can post again (with the LA account).

I have no idea...I would think so, but it looks like the norm...every tournament I've streamed shows players with that set up. MLG and Blizz invitationals don't have the headphones that light up but it's still big, noise-canceling/reducing headphones.
I just got promoted (to silver! Woohoo!!) and I was wondering what the points are...so in my new division, it shows my current rank, my points, and my wins. The wins is my win total for this season, so that makes sense. The points are a little more than my points that I originally though. Are those points my point total minus bonus pool points? Or some arbitrary MMR based thing?

I think this thread should be sticked to the top shouldn't it?
Anyway, i recently switched from Protoss to Terran because i felt like my race was limiting me too much. Just today i sieged protosses natural while droping BF hellions into his mineral line, while nuking his 3rd and when he moved out, his army got EMP'd and obliterated. So much posibilities that are cost effective. 1 medivac of marines killing few probes, then sniping templar archives, then killing some probes again, then sniping robo... god, this race is so good.

Quick question that probably doesn't warrant its own thread: I'm used to my SCVs killing drones 1 on 1 when they get the first hit in. Played a game today where it didn't work. Checked the replay, I definitely do get the first attack in (see picture below) and my SCV is constantly on attack (check in the replay, I select it at some point but nothing else).
I can't understand how this happened to be honest! It's a mystery! Solve it! :D
From Liquipedia - Drone article
Drones are technically as strong as SCVs in worker vs worker battles, meaning that a Drone will win in a straight up fight versus a worker from Protoss and will defeat an SCV provided it attacks first.
SCV health on the left, Drone on the right, both pics always taken at the same time.
LINK TO REPLAY: http://drop.sc/26743
|
|
Which is why Infestors take 3 snipes to kill .....=(
|
The SCV did definitely get the first attack off, look at the picture, top row. :p I know there is regeneration but it shouldn't be enough to make the SCV lose when it got the first hit off due to my mathematics and Liquipedia. :D
EDIT: And the zerg player did not micro the drone as you can see in the picture and the replay. Both units are constantly attacking each other.
The math: A drone regenerates 2 HP total when getting attacked by an SCV giving it 42 effective hitpoints. An SCV has 45. Since both units deal 5 damage that means they have essentially the same amount of life - 9 hits. Since both are dealing damage at the same rate (weapon speed 1.5) this means that the unit that gets the first attack off must win. I absolutely got the first attack off (not just by a single frame either, couple of frames) and still lost. This is what is puzzling me!
|
Someone make a TheBest fanclub!
|
I think it depends on when the damage is actually dealt. Units like stalkers require the animation to finish before they do damage while a sentry deals its damage at the very beginning, with or without animation. The drone may deal damage at the beginning of its animation while the SCV at the end.
Just a theory.

There is truth to that theory, unfortunately it's the other way around according to Liquipedia.
From Liquipedia - Drone article
However, in contrast to the attacks of the SCV and Probe, the attack of the Drone has a slight delay in the beginning of the attack animation and the actual damage being dealt.
I really don't get what happened. At this point I can only assume that either there is wrong information in the Liquipedia or a glitch in the game. The former is something that could be rectified easily, the latter would be a bigger deal because there shouldn't be an element of randomness in the game. You should always be able to say: "An SCV always beats a Probe, a drone beats and SCV when getting the first attack off and vice versa". A glitch like that makes predicting the outcome of a worker fight a guessing game.
Any other ideas?

The drone was following your scv to attack, so it would make sense that the drone attacked first. In the replay I couldn't see that same thing that you screenshot, so I don't know how you were able to screenshot the milisecond where the scv supposedly hit first, but I think that if there is a bug, the bug is in the screenshot/replay, the drone does seem to have hit first.
|
If you set the replay speed to normal (slowest speed possible) and spam the P button to pause and unpause the replay you can get close to seeing it happen frame by frame. That way I was able to find a couple of frames in the game/replay where my SCV was still at full 45 health and his drone already at 35, meaning that the SCV attacked first. That's what the top row of my picture above shows as well.

Using the editor i discovered that there is a random delay (like the delay for the stalker attack) before any attack: it is a random value between +0.125 and -0.0625. This is probably the cause of this "bug".

This probably has to do somewhat with latency of both players. Maybe if you look at the zerg replay you might see that he indeed hit first, but the lag of the terran made it seems, in the replay, that the scv hit first.
Something like that?

I don't think that latency affects replays (can anyone confirm?). Anyway, i checked the replay and the drone attacked just some milliseconds after the SCV and probably the Zerg got lucky with the random delay, especially in the last attack. If you watch carefully it you can see that the SCV started the attack that would have killed the drone before the drone but the drone hit first. As a matter of fact the random delay doesn't affect the animation of the attack but just the moment in which the damage is dealt.
|
Wow, first of all, thanks for finding out!
Second of all, I have never heard of this random delay before attacks anywhere, is this a new information to the Starcraft community at large?
I hate to sound overly dramatic but this is kinda groundbreaking. We would need to check if this affects other unit combos (apart from mirrors, like Stalker vs. Stalker in PvP) as well! I presume that the chance that the unit that attacks earlier loses is very small as people would have found out about this earlier but still.
Now, I personally don't understand why they would put in something random like that into the game at Blizzard at ALL. This completely breaks Starcraft for me! When I scout a Zerg with an SCV I want to know, will I be able to kill his drone or not one on one. Right now, chances are good I will kill his drone when I attack first but I can't rely on it. This is like if chess had a figure that when you kill it with one of your pieces there would be a chance yours would get killed too. Gamebreaking imho.
Any other opinions/insight?

I'm just going to put this here because General Discussion moves a lot slower and I think people take the time to read all of the posts. If I put this in a pertaining thread it would disappear in an instant under five new pages of OMG or H8 U.
Huk left Liquid. An incentive was a lot of money. Also his contract was up. There were a lot of reasons but none of them were synonymous with "Betrayal". First, EG has never been a rival of Liquid. Team'Liquid is not by most measures one of the top three teams (Unless you measure by fan support <3). However EG is further down the totem pole. Yes, of course, EG has earned the malcontent of some posters by events that have been chronicled enough that I don't need to refresh you. Yes, they do make an easy target. I'm hard pressed to deny that.
Now I don't know all that much about basketball but LeBron James caused a shitstorm when he left after his contract was up. In turn he was compensated many times over for his "defection". So did Huk. If you are aware of basketball world- ask yourself how big of a deal that move is now? To certain people the sting will never go away but by the by people have forgiven and forgot.
So remember what I'll tell you the next time you're going to make a post that entails the following sentiments- Huk is a traitor/betrayer/sellout. Remember when you blame EG for being.. evil.
All of this will pass within a few months and there will be new, delicious drama to eat up. In the meantime please try and show everyone else why www.teamliquid.net isn't even in the same league as the rest of the gaming sites. Please show your manners and if you can't do anything positive at all then say it makes you sad or outraged. Don't leap for the nearest cruel word. Hell, don't even get mad. Not only will all of this be (mostly) forgotten in the next 60 days but we have a new champion anyway!

I'm sure there's a thread on it somewhere but I don't even know what to search for so sorry if it's obvious. How do I get a US license for SC2. Not the literally mechanics of buying it, but do I need to make an entirely new b.net account, can I link it to my existing one?
In short, what do I need to do two play in two regions solely with regards to having two licenses?

I have AM and EU acc in the same e-mail/account, you just need to buy the key for that account. There is no secret into it. If you have a more specific question, please bring it here.

Well you cant reallt compare Huks situation with Lebrons. Lebron already had a multimilion contract, which Huk clearly hasnt. That Huk would join EG for the money is understandable, and is the logical choice, given that a gamers future is really unstable moneywise.
The reason that people hate Lebron is that he was on a sucky team and joined a much better one just to win the championship. It wasnt even just that he joined Miami, it was that he waited until the last moment to declare what he was going to do and then he did it live on TV, he´s a sellout and a douche, which I dont think Huk is.

That's an excellent point--SC is much more about individual talent and skill than a team's aggregate talent and skill. I wonder though, if this same sort of thing would be tolerated in Korea, where the GSTL makes up a huge part of the season's games...for example, if MMA went and joined IM, that'd probably cause a much bigger uproar, just because so much of the team's success depends on the team itself, more so than in foreign tournaments, where it sometimes just seems like a player's team is nothing more than the prefix attached to their name.
|
Recommend me some good BUT unknown Zerg matches you have seen in the past week or so?

I wonder if Blizzard will be announcing a 10mil$ "SC2 Blizzard DOTA All-Stars" tournament at Blizzcon.

Why are zerg progamers so bad at stopping bunker rushes, seriously, so many zergs dont block it and lose their nat even in gsl.

What unit composition does protoss need against lings/infestors w/ baneling drop?
|
I'm going to guess and venture that you'd probably need some combination of HT, Stalkers, Colossi, Phoenix (to pick off Infestors)? That comp's incredibly micro-intensive though....

I'm a silver level player that is wanting to start playing some of the tournaments I see posted on this site but I am kind of unsure on how exactly to go about doing it. Could someone please help me out with this? Not sure if this is the right place to post but help would be appreciated.

Well the easiest and most direct way is to post in the tournament thread and PM the person who started it or if listed organized it for more information. I'd start there!
If you post the threads for the tournaments I'll have a look for you.

Anybody know what text languages are available in SC2? I know there's limited voice/sound packs, but is there a wider range of unit/UI text (like Japanese or Turkish)?

Hi everyone,, i have problem and i hope you guys can help me a little bit:
I am still stucked in bronze for like months now,, and i am only playing against silver, gold, and sometimes even plat for weeks now and i am winning like 75% of these matches but i am not promoting..
the last 2 weeks i have played like 50 matches and against 4-5 bronze players, the others are all silver or higher skilled players, but i am not getting promoted no matter how much of these matches i am winning, for example: yesterday i played 8 matches and won them all,, only 1 bronze player. but still not getting promoted.
do anybody knows what i am doing wrong?? This REALLY pisses me off.
grtz Rick "Cheprus" van Gils
|
You're not doing anything wrong, it's just that the system doesn't know where to put you. You just have to keep playing, I'm afraid.
|
/sigh. Cheprus this comes up often enough that it kills me. Blizzard should really have put a disclaimer that said results may vary on ranks :\
You're not doing anything wrong. Sometimes people just have rotten luck and basically, you have to wait for a new division to open. The best advice I can give is to keep playing and winning. Every day if you can. As long as you have a win every day the system should be trying to place you in a higher division. But it's barely uncommon to read what you're saying. The only thing I can really do is link you the Leagues and Ladder guide which I'm sure you've read and wish you the best of luck.
Keep on winning, it doesn't matter what stupid icon is next to your rank as long as you know you've won 10 straight. Good luck.

Using a hotkeyed SCV to detect banelings landmines, by just using the print of a command center (or other building). If one of the green squares is red, then there's a landmine and you can scan it.
I don't know if someone else proposed it before, i just thought of it, and if someone already mentionned the idea, then great. Could it work with a matching APM ? Are some people already using it ? Just wondering if this is a realistic idea.

It doesn't show a red square. At least with lings, I don't think it would apply differently to banes.

Recently it feels that protoss players have the lowest WIN/ LOSE ratio out of all the races. with recent patches from nerfing warp gate upgrade time, to buffing other units , new strategies seem to be overpowering the protoss. Infestors and ghost have become great counters to the current protoss army composition. and with nerfing on protoss high templar it can no longer compete with its other race counter parts. It just no longer seems to be that the protoss is that all mighty powerful race it use to be. Do you agree that blizzard should buff the protoss? if not can someone give me a way to counter them?

Protoss army is still strong, that is not the problem right now. Problem is that you don't have a good harass unit. You could mass pheonix, you can invest in DT, but you don't have marine drop, blue flame drop, banshee nor baneling drop nor mass mutas efficiency. That means it is easy to feel somewhat safe against you. You best harass is possible walking zealots into mineral lines u.u
Also, your macro mechanic (chrono) just fail. Zerg has the queen, that is actually worth one more hatchery, it's awesome. Terrans have mules AND scan. Protoss can make units/tech faster, but then it becomes so standard that all it does is more nerfs to you. Chrono needs to work with warping buildings and to increase the regen of energy of units and maybe increase their attack speed as well. Then you will have options that are interesting. They could actually nerf chrono to buff some things on protoss and it could probably be benefitial to protoss.
But army power isn't the problem, maybe Terran army power is a problem? EMP, marauder with stim, I don't know, I only play zerg so PvZ, but I still think protoss can be fixed with a better macro mechanic + a really good harass unit (reaver??).
That is only my opinion, as a zerg. ZvP is imbalanced, but you can still hide a tech and kill me by surprise, that means you still wins sometimes (Losira just lost to 4 gate and is now in UP & Down, isn't he? I didn't watch it, I just heard). So you can still win with the nerfed "4 gate", 4 gate is still strong, problem is that if we know you are doing whatever, we can counter, And your sneaky abilities (DT) aren't strong enough to make us that worried
Yeah, protoss needs help IMO, but buffing colossus, high templar etc won't help with the actual problem, army power isn't the problem >.>
Sorry for my terrible english u.u
|
Yeah I'll agree withe the most. But also Socke beats often Zerg with his Templar heavy Build.
But did any of you notice that right now in the GSL Code S the most in the Round of 16 are Terrans. But I don't think that Terran is imbalanced. I just think that one year ago many Pro Player switchs to SC2 and at this time Terran was simply Imbalance. Right now they don't wantto switch races. Thats why there are so many korean Pro Terrans. What do you think about that? Do you think its a Problem?
|
The main problem i feel is still this, while the colossus and high templar do high DPS, however they only excel at killing large amount of lower tier units, they are weak to high tier unit because its so easy to hard counter the protoss army by just killing the templar or the colossus, because gate way units are weak when compared to the roach hydra or marine marauder,
However i have to disagree with you in terms of army power, as each race has its own traits like zerg massing , or terran d fence and long life, the protoss falls under the category of having higher power base army, so in idea a max 200 protoss should be stronger than a max zerg or terran. However the protoss army still does not truly shine till they get those higher teir units like col temps , there gateways units are relativity weak when compared to those of the zerg and terran
Also i have to complain that the ghost and infestor either have to be nerffed or that the templar regain its kadarian amulet. What i feel most people didn't realize is that the ghost and infestor fungle growth and EMP are equal to the templars storm, its just that not until recently have they been used, while protoss have been using templars before them.
As for the harass unit, i feel that its more of a equalizer, the more harass a race has, it takes away from the other parts, vise versa, so the fact that the protoss has relativley no harass should be said that there army should be stronger, or that production be better. the zerg and terran both have harass units, ( thou i still believe zerg to have the best if used correctly) while there armies are now relativly equal to a protoss, if not more powerful.
the main reason i feel on the protoss nerfs are for helping the lower levels of SC 2 out. where most people would just sit on 2 base or 3 base, get 200 200 and push, while then the protoss army would win. but in higher tier games while more is happening it won't be as easy to get 200 200, plus thing of micro of storms and kill the col first are things that don't happen at the lower teirs, but at higher teirs they do.
i believe that they should either nerf ghost and infestor, or buff the standard gateway unit

I don't seem to remember bronze-silver players doing storm warp ins which was one of the capitulations of Khydarian amulet. And gateway units are already so strong that other races cannot beat them without upgrades like tunneling claws, attack range for hydras, stim, combat shield/conc shell.
And warp prisms are the most underrated uber unit in the game. As a zerg player I'm terrified that one day Protoss will learn that they can win late games with the uber power of warping in 9 chargelots and a sentry, killing a hive+all tech and forcefielding the ramp so I can only respond with certain units.
Feedback is still fucking amazing,, storm is still OP, Colo/voidray is still nearly unbeatable and if you want a better harass unit than DTs then I think you're just saying the grass is greener on the other side.

Is it possible to win as Zerg versus Terran when u spawn close distance on shattered temple and he opens blue flame into 8-tank/rine push (Master Level of execution, without slips or mistakes)? If, what strategy did u use as zerg?
|
6RR. Then cheat on drones like all hell and pray. Close pos is just stupid I don't have a real strategy against masters in that spawn position.
|
If a Zerg morphs a red HP unit (ling, corrupter, overlord), will it evolve and emerge with full HP (bane, brood lord, overseer)?

Why don't any Terrans do Turret pushes vs Zerg? So many times they get stuff picked off because the marines are out of position, and turrets aren't that expensive

Well, I baneling bust all in.
GL HF
(If you scout for close positions at 10-11), you will be able to know if he is there and if he is, just go 14 gas 13 pool, get speed and bane nest, tanks won't be ready. But don't blindly try to bust, if he made a perfect wall (scout with the speedlings) you can just keep the units there "pinning" him and then you expand/catch up. That means you won't play a macro game, but a close game of scout reaction. Chances are he will scout the baneling and he will be in 1 base for awhile as well though, so take the chance, be carefull with drops, be ready for base trades and good luck <3)

This comment is extremely biased...
gateway units arent strong at all. Your argument says that you need upgrades to beat gateway armies ( im assuming zealot stalker sentry) but protoss also needs charge and blink....toss needs upgrades too lol. Not to mention the higher cost of stalkers compared to roach: 125/50 to 75/25. The problem with the PvZ matchup atm is securing a 3rd base imo. Usually a zerg is fully saturated on 3 bases at about the same time protoss wants to take a 3rd, and ive seen so many protoss die to just plain mass roach ling agression nonstop when toss tries to take a 3rd. once FF runs out, the toss pretty much dies.
Feedback is amazing, but very hard to get off with good zerg positioning, and if they have an overseer in their army to prevent obs.
Storm isnt op, what a joke lol. Fungal does a bit less damage, but holds units in place, does extra to armored (which is most of the toss army), and DOESNT HIT YOUR OWN UNITS. Not to mention that the Z will usually have more gas due to being on 3 bases faster and getting additional bases just for gas income. Storm also costs 200/200 to research, and templar no longer have energy upgrade. Storm requires temp archives: 150/200 and twilight council 150/100. Infestors are a tier 2.5ish unit, and usually have most effect before any HT are out at all, because a P on 2base teching to HT is very expensive.
DTs are countered by 2 spines/1spore at every base. Tech building costs 100/250. Compared to bling drops (overlord + 200/100 for 4 blings) which can take out 20 probes instantly, warping in 3-4 DTs is way more costly, spores will probably already be up to prevent stargate or earlier dts, and zerg units can be very mobile on creep to react (unlike the terrible mobility of the ptoss ball). workers also outrun DTs, where blings 1shot probes with +2 attack. The best thing about DTs is sending them to other expansions to delay expos, but even that is dedicating 125/125 just to delay a 4th or 5th hatchery for a minute or 2.
Even sending 3-4 roaches to each toss base can be very effective, kill lots of workers, and force more obs if u have burrow, and have burrowed roaches at the mineral line of 2-3 bases. very cost efficient, roaches kill workers fast, and abuses toss mobility as well. Everytime a zerg does this, i get pretty far behind even if i react well, because losing a couple roaches doesnt really do much and i end up losing at least like 12 probes.
Collo/void ray dies to infestors lol, theres a reason nobody does this anymore.
1 thing i agree with is that warp prisms are underused, and are very effective in hte very late game. But in the mid game, its hard to harass Z base with them because P needs every unit to defend any kind of 3base attack. Overall, harass is LEAST cost efficient for toss out of all 3 races by far.

You can download youtube videos using youtube downloader. Day9 and TotalBiscuit regularly upload VODs from the tournaments they cast on there, and you can also check teamliquidnet channel for VODs from TL Opens, TSL3 etc. There are probably a lot of other channels, but none are on my follow list so I wouldn't know.
I'm -pretty- sure you can download blip.tv videos as well, though I haven't seen the Download link since they changed their site layout.

I'd vote Nestea and MVP a close 2nd.

I starved out my first opponent! TvT, sat outside his natural as he threw tank after tank into my siege line and 3-3 marauders, one-shotted a Thor. Flew around destroying orbitals and drops with a couple Vikings, scouted to make sure he didn't have any bases. IT WAS AWESOME.

You best harass is possible walking zealots into mineral lines u.u Also, your macro mechanic (chrono) just fail. So you can still win with the nerfed "4 gate", 4 gate is still strong, problem is that if we know you are doing whatever, we can counter, And your sneaky abilities (DT) aren't strong enough to make us that worried Yeah, protoss needs help IMO, but buffing colossus, high templar etc won't help with the actual problem, army power isn't the problem >.> Sorry for my terrible english u.u
thx for your comment. It is not often to hear a zerg say zvp is imbalanced but I think you are right. any race can hide tech and surprise his opponent and wins sometimes, but this is not to say zvp is balanced. In fact, when genius was playing Losira, I guess he did not have adequate confidence to play a macro with Losira and that was why he 4 gate. But does he really enjoy 4 gating? I do not think so, it is a gamble after all. But he had no chance, it was one game away for him from the up & dowm match and he knows how hard to play a macro game against a zerg on that map. Therefore, he needs to gamble.

Do you think its a Problem?
you cannot force pros to choose the race they do not like. But from the viewer's point, too many tvts could be a problem.

No. Storm does 80 and fungals do like 30-50. It's kind of annoying to see people complaining about Fungal all the time. I don't know why everyone is just accepting that it's imbalanced, it isn't. Is it hard for a Protoss to stop? No, not really. Scout it and open HT, then get Immortals when they switch to Roach. Ah well, this is for the Balance thread.

I've been noticing a distinct lack of manners on the lower leagues which I inhabit, i've had 5-10 games in the last 2 days in which I wasn't given a gg after winning. Especially when I use Thors, which I know aren't the most goodwill-inducing units to lose to, but it's simply polite to gg. I'm quite new to SC2, so is this to be expected in lower leagues?

Its time for Zealot to get the cleave (25% - 50% psi blades splash dmg) upgrade from Tier1 or 1.5 Building =)

Yes, nowhere it is written that it is expected to say "gg" when you lose, so it might not be a common sense, some players might think you say gg (good game) to the games you thought were somewhat cool/interesting ("good"), and not just a standard "hi/bye" social thing.
If you really think the game was good you say ww (well won), if you just admit you lost and are going to leave, then you say gg (that basicly means: yeah, I lost, cya).
So yeah, not everyone understands the manners and that's fine, as long as their gg aren't "you sux" or "gay" I guess I am fine with the lack of "manners".

Can I just ask if this experience is the same for anyone else: Ladder hates me.
I'm currently a Gold player, have been playing 90% plats for the past week and a half. I can go on 6-match winning sprees and still face plats, not get promoted or anything. Then the instant I lose ONE match, I'm back to playing golds. Lose two, and it's silver. From here it takes me like 6 or 7 wins to get back to playing against platinum players again.
My question: does anyone else notice this heavy down skew of the matchmaking? It seems it hardly rewards/advances me for winning yet it drops my MMR down 2 leagues if I lose even a single match. Losses simply seem to affect who I play against way more than wins.
Not sure where else to put this. edit just to make sure I'm not misunderstood: I don't mean that I think I should get promoted or anything. Maybe I should, maybe not, not up to me to judge. What I am annoyed by is that even a single loss results in me having to work my way through 6 easy-ish wins just to get back to the same level where I lost.

You should just stop watching your opponen's profile and having headache for nothing. Play, win as much as possible, you'll get what you deserve.
|
When you lose to something bullshitty you know it's hard to overcome the urge to look at your opponents profile and battlenet stalk him for a few minutes until you're calm enough to get cheesed play again.
|
It's not that I'm looking at their profile and that is bugging me. It is actually noticeable in their play, since most of the matcher after one loss are pushovers. Example: lose to pretty damn well executed 1/1/1 push once, then meet 5 Zerg who you literally outmacro off a 3gate expand. It's only after I noticed these weird peaks and valleys in match difficulty that I started checking their profiles and found some supporting facts.
Like I said, I don't care when or if I get promoted, I just don't like how the matchmaker thinks I need easy wins after a loss. It's time consuming and actually ingrains the very play habits that I'm trying to shake by playing against people I can beat even when I'm playing pretty sloppily. It's simply very slow practice.
|
Yeah, I'm in Gold too and have the same experience. I didn't see it that way though, I just thought maybe (at least on NA) there isn't that much of a difference in skill level between top Silver to low Platinum.

Wow, all protoss eliminated from GSL Code A and only 2 protoss remain in Code S.
I wonder if it's going to start hitting Gom's bottom line? I know I'm not going to pay full price for a GSL season ticket when almost none of the matches involve a protoss. Maybe they need to introduce a pay-per-match model or something so protoss fans can just pay for 3-4 games that they care to see. Or maybe they should start using the handicap feature to try and keep roughly-equal representation for the three races. Protoss is a really popular race even though they aren't doing well in tournaments; seems like Gom stands to lose a lot of money if all those fans can't find any entertainment in the GSL.
edit: lol GOMTVT.NET

Quick question for those more familiar with SC2 than myself. I know it's pretty easy to spot cloaked protoss and terran units (ghosts, bansheets, DTs and obs), without having detection, but is it possible at all to spot burrowed zerg units without any detection?

I'm a Bronze level Terran player that has heard that Protoss lacks good harass. This irks me a little. What's wrong with Pylons? Is this just my lake of experience talking?

By doing this you're relying on opponent's not scouting, and it isn't good.

|
The thing is, having DTs means you went down a tech route that isn't really gonna get you any army strength, only harass. Considering that T can scan or throw down some turrets and nullify your entire expense, it's simply a gamble to use tactics like those.
If you compare this to other races harass options, they are almost guaranteed to do enough damage to justify the cost. Banshees are guaranteed to get a couple of probe kills, maybe even pick off a pylon or two, and that doesn't depend on the other player not scouting. Most importantly, they fit into the big army a lot better - they're standard fare for a 1/1/1 push, and their mobility allows you to keep using them even when the other guy already knows you have them.
Same for Mutalisks. Sure, they might not do too well in a big army battle, but they will soft contain an opponent in their base for the longest time, allowing Z to get their econ up, which is already worth the expense.
With DT's it's simply not the same. It's a trick you can do and sometimes it will pay off. Most of the times, not.
|
I think you're completely right but in the late game it's not as much of a gamble because people don't tend to have full DT-prevention-defense at every single base. Their army can't spread perfectly as much as they'd love to. In ZvP macro games I always see even people like Destiny struggling a little with spread DT harassment but of course he eventually puts up spines and spores. My point is they're still useful in the late game but at the right places at the right time.
Also I'd like to ask, I heard there's an APM meter you can put onto SC2 just like with Brood War. Anyone got any idea where to get it ? I'd like to check out my APM in the middle of a match and not have to check it out on the replay.
|
I know sc2gears has an APM checker thing, but I think that just lets you know if you dip below or above a certain APM. Not sure if it's what you're looking for (doesn't sound like it), but might be worth checking out?
|
Oh my god thank you so much, I've been looking for this program for a while now. It's so useful in many regards and it saves all my replays in one clean area. You have saved me many hours of frustration :D

Scouting is never overrated. Its the most essential part of your game. With out proper scouting its hard to determine a build and if they do scout your tech and hard counter it you lose. For this reason the word imbalance and overpowered get thrown around without reason or justification. As for upgrades depending on the build its not always required but there is nothing wrong if implemented properly It can help with vital timing attacks on both offense and defense. The thing is incorporating them into a build properly without losing to much outta resources and units in the early game.

How does that mean that imbalance or overpowered are empty words? Many people know just fine when a certain attack is coming, yet *still* can't beat it. That's when they cry OP. In other cases, the nature of the attack/build means that you cannot scout it for certain and can only guess (example being proxy stargates).
You're basically saying that the only reason people consistently lose to anything is that they don't scout at all. This is simply not true. Beating a strategy requires two components: information and an actual response to that information.

What kind of a skill difference is there between GM and professional? Watching the likes of Sheth even when he's just messing about on ladder he seems like he's at least a league ahead and you never hear something like "Here at MLG, we're in the finals and spawning on the right side, he's a GM player you've never heard of before with no team or sponsership, BeardedPacMan!"
So yeah, just how big is the skill difference between being GM and being pro?

GSTL Jupiter Group Week 9
Series 1 F.United vs Prime Starters: ThorZaIN vs BBoongBBoong
Series 2 SlayerS vs Old Generations Starters: GanZi vs Cezanne
link
Soluhwin: Found by searching team liquid.. thread wikipedia page
Summary:
The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in two-player games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-born American physics professor.
ELO is based at 2000, and increases/decreases with games played against race X. That's all I gleaned from a quick look at numbers :/
The most important thing to take away is that the rating itself doesn't mean anything. It's the difference between two players ratings that gives you useful information regarding the likelyhood of a games possible outcomes.

Thanks a lot, I failed to find a link. How long do GSTL's last?
& are todays matches worth watching?
|
I've heard a lot of talk by pros(namely Idra) that TvZ mech+ghost turtling is ridiculously strong, maybe to the point of being OP. I was wondering if anyone has seen some pro level vods or replays of this style being used.
|
GSTLs last about the same time as a regular broadcast. Anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3 hours. I'd guess somewhere after two hours for the matches today. F.United get all killed and SlayerS-oGs going down to the ace match just sayin
Leaky I don't have any replay links but this is the builds thread. It has some replays in it. It won't be quite as OP with the hellion nerf though ^_^ (Thank god)

Thanks, might catch it but 5am is kind of harsh. We'll see.

So I was thinking about a harass unit for protoss in HotS -- I think I recall the Browder mentioning they wanted to give protoss a "raider" unit. Me and my friend brainstormed, came up with something. Wanted to shoot it at you guys, see what you thought:
The Warp Spider. A low health (40s 60h), 2.5 speed stalker-like unit. It can warp from power field to powerfield across the map. It's like nydus, but with lower initial investment and as a tradeoff only one unit can do it. Using phase prisms allows the Warp Spider to harass a probe line, and then vanish back through the powerfield. If the phase prism dies, that's fine, since no units were "on board" (a balancing factor to the Phase Prism's extremely low health, though you still need to load it up to move any other units). EMP resets the warp ability cooldown (15s). Fungal does not, but damage is still delivered through the warp. Since units take double damage while warping (a 3 second process), not warping while fungled may be a better idea. Think of them a bit like "Mutalisk of the ground", though that analogy is a bit like saying the colossus is a "siege tank": loooots of differences.
For a race that generally has to stay clumped together, this could give some serious mobility. The unit is produced from stalkers -- the energy crystal matrix inside of the stalker is enhanced and expanded, but because of the size of it, the matrix protrudes from the stalker's exoskeleton. Once a stalker becomes a Warp Spider it cannot revert. Research unlocked at the twilight council. Morphing requires 25 gas and being in a power-field. Morphing requires 10s, during which the stalker will take double damage.
So that's the idea ^^
|
You're going to have that lack of mobility argument turned on your head when the warp prism buff is live
|
Yeah, this system works best of the warp prisim is fragile. Don't get me wrong, I think a warp prism buff is good for WoL, but I'd rather see this system in HotS XD

Has anyone seen an official MLG list of players in the open bracket? They usually make some announcement of notable players. Is there anything this time around? I'm interested in who will fighting in the open bracket.

Really? The Elo system devised by Arpad Elo? It doesn't stand for anything, instead it's named after the creator. I just searched "elo" and the Wikipedia entry was the third result. Look it up. It's formally known as the "Elo rating system" and is the premier system used by chess leagues.

LA players have to install the NA client to be able to play in the PTR.
At least with nowadays internet speed it isn't that big of a problem...
Edit: The blue Rhastion from Brazil forums confirmed that it was a "bug" that led LA players from having access to PTR and that's why we don't have a full support to it yet.
We still can play there though, just have to download the enUS client and install PTR there.

Do you think that when HotS is released that it will have a separate ladder from vanilla SC2? Do you think that your SC2 MMR will carry over into HotS or do you think it will be a clean-slate reboot?
Might be a good opportunity to switch races if it's a clean slate.

Two questions I have been wondering about for a long time. 1. Why does roaches get +2 dam every missile upgrade? 2. Why does a roach comes out even vs a stalker (who btw like the hydra only gets +1 dam every missile upgrades)

Roach fires way slower, but I too have been wondering about the imbalance of roach upgrade, as a 3-3 roach is actually way strong than a 3-0-3 stalker.

Yeah I know. I also tried to put a 3/3/3 stalker vs a 3/3 roach with speed and on creep. The results were that they both died ( and yes I know stalkers can shoot air and the roach can't but still).

Hi, can someon make a page on liquidpedia with the standard openings for each match up? and standard stuff?
I would make one but I don't now any BO, I suck because of that and I think that more people share my problem, a centralized page for standard strats and BOs would be great :D
another thing what do you guys think about the 12 pool 19 hatch topic?

Roaches are not imbalanced x.x
Make immortals.

A 12 pool 19 hatch is the same thing as a 11 pool 18 hatch only with weird ass timings.
Edit: I actually got back out of bed cos I felt I gave a very weak response. An 11 pool 18 hatch and a 12 pool 19 hatch are the same principle. A fast queen, the ability to defend against early aggression. Most notably a ZvZ build that encompasses pure or extremely heavy zergling until a fast lair/infestor where you easily out upgrade your opponent, then getting a ultra fast hive for ultralisks, rolling a pure roach/roach infestor army with 3/0/5 ultras 3/0/3 lings and infestors.
It's a fun alternative to the standard roach infestor roach muta roach roach roach ZvZ style.
Also roach immortal pretty good,

I know they aren't just thought about the upgrade aspect of it compared to Hydra/Stalker.

1. All units get around a 10% damage boost for each weapon upgrade. Taking rounding into account, it is only consistent that the stalker gets 10+1 (+4 vs armored) and the roach gets 16+2. Just like the zealot by the way, who gets 2x(8+1) and thus profits just as much as the roach. Look around Wikipedia, you'll find that almost all units behave like this. 2. The stalker is fast, flexible, has superior range, can learn blink and attacks air. For all these benefits, of course you are less cost efficient than a roach in a straight-up fight.
|
Okay I'm awake and I can answer the roach/stalker question properly.
Looking at damage output alone stalkers seem to get the worse end of the deal. But Stalkers have bonus damage against armored. A 3/0/0 stalker does 12 damage per shot and a 0/3/0 Roach does 20. Doesn't seem fair at all? Look at the attack speed. A Stalker fires .5 seconds faster than a Roach! In a Stalker-Roach fight they will trade pretty evenly. But when you add in Blink, the Stalker will come out on top. You might say, well roaches have burrow you know. But you can't fire when a roach is burrowed. Blink backs allow you to maintain fire on the enemy army while regenerating shields.
Stalkers have more total health (80 hp 80 shield vs 145), fire faster and have a superior range. Sure in a theory bubble Roaches will eat Stalkers but with micro and positioning a Stalker is the stronger unit.
I'd say this was the last thing that needed to be said on Roach//Stalker without adding in well what about lings et cetera.
HardBoy359 were you looking for a standard set of build orders like + Show Spoiler [this?] +
The Liquipedia page for strategy pretty much has that O.o Zerg Strategy

yup they do but you have to open all the strats and check if it is Strandard or not
what I was saying is that someone that know the standard ones could make a page of Standard Builds so they are easier to find :D

How do you cope with losing? For those who do not understand what i mean : When I play ladder and i get cheese few times in a roll I am just pissed I go in nerd rage and i just hate the game(in this moment ONLY). I am very competev. I play terran and when it happen to win a game with tactic and timing and everything go good for me. I just get called names and that i play th OP race and i will not get a win if i was not playing as T. That just make me sick inside. When i lose a game (not a cheese play) i will always admit the gg and wp. No matter what. When I lose 4-5 games in a roll (yes i do that!) I hate it !!! But re watch the replay and trying to find out what i did wrong. But with the cheese just i want to find that person and to smack him in the face hard(few times). What do you think and what you do when y are in a bad mode and how do you get out of it. P.S. I love the game and i do not think to stop it for nothing right now. GL and HF !

Well I usually don't really mind loosing if I played well in that game, it makes me really sick when people cheese me -.-
T is not OP! I think that you should take all those insults as complements, you played so much better than the opponent that you made your race seam op :D
But loosing makes me tilt a lot, when you loose and you want to rush to another game or you feel really fucking disapointed and angry at yourself just calm tha f*ck down, play other games, LoL will keep you mouse hand warm, and wow or other hotkey based MMO will keep your fingers ready, and then when it passes you can go back to SC2 :D
I had a huge streak of losses, I was 7th silver, and then I started loosing and loosing and then I go injured in my mouse hand and I still played because I wanted to get top 7 again and then I stoped and now I have't played for a month.
I decided that I need to rest and define my BOs and openings and then begin to train them, after MLG I should begin playing again and I intent to get to gold :D
Hope it helps ^^

Haven't found a right place to post my nooby questions so I'm just asking here! (I play Protoss)
(1) I feel very uncomfortable if I play against a zerg having in mind that I want to open with a 1 gate expand (and transition into 3 gate robo most likely trying to execute a 2 base collosi timing push) and my zerg opponent starts with a 15 hatch. I always have in mind that I should punish this greedy action but I don't know why because I have not enough units and production buildings to really push while he gets out 10 zerglings in one wave. So what to do against that.. I have generally problems with keeping a zerg busy and from droning up and just attack for example with a tiny push in the beginning. if I expand he always gets roaches before my push(and I'm damn afraid of roaches...) And yeah what I need is how to punish 15 hatch if I want to expand myself and how to execute those tiny pushes in the beginning that do so much damage..
(2) How should I defend a blind Protoss expansion (he doesn't know what I am doing) when he spends a lot of his first minerals in sentrys to have a lot force fields for defense? if I wait for my observer they sometimes already have the expansion finished when my observer reaches their base.
Thanks for any tips

Thanks for any tips Hello mate. I play terran but I think i can help you with part of your questions I see a lot of tosses to get the early stargate and go 3-4 fenix with a void ray. and it works a lot but it is very micro build. And during the harrasment you can expand. To make zerg to turn larva into attacking units i personally just move out like i want to attack him and make sure he see my army moving and once i am in front of him i back up. Also you can look up into DT teck( not opening but mid game or late game). And afther 1.4 patch the warp prison will be buffed so that could help you a lot. I do not know how toss is punishing 15 hatch i can't help there. 2) Hard to say for me but. I watched a games of Pro players where they go sentary heavy for the force fields. Once up to a X number of those they expand but you may want to check protoss forum in general and Youtube vids

Hey I've been playing starcraft some and starcraft 2 a decent amount. I just started getting into sc2 and my buddy is a top diamond league player but is too dumb to teach me good techniques. Does anyone know when 1.4.0 will come live? Around in how many weeks or so, any clues?

I am in a league division with only 3 people. Seriously, there are 100 spots for other people, but there are only 3 including myself in my division. I feel like I should either lose a bunch of games to be demoted then win a bunch of games to be put in another division OR just shut up and be happy. I am number 2 in my division. #3 has 11 wins. #1 has 130 wins. I have 50~ wins. I feel like if I stay in the division, I'll never be promoted. Is this how this works?
What do?

Your division should fill up as other people get promoted or demoted, unless there's some problem with the ladder, but typically it's just a result of it being a new division. To answer your more wider question though, no you don't need to get yourself demoted. You will play people from other divisions at around your MMR that are laddering at the same time as you, and the division only exists so you can compare yourself and compete to be the top of your division but it has no impact on anything really until you're rank 1 GM.
You don't need to be any specific rank to be promoted, so even if it's only the 3 of you you're promotion prospects remain the same. If you work on winning games your hidden Match Making Rating will increase and once that hidden value reaches a high enough level you'll be promoted regardless of your current rank. I was, for instance, not even in the top 10 when I last got promoted.
For a more in depth analysis of how laddering works if you're interested see this thread:

Sorry for being random right here, but is the server for Battle.net down in SEA? Can't seem to access their website too. :\
|
There's a thread in SC2 Forum that tells you. Right below this one. BNet Status, US: Online, EU: Online, KR: Online, SEA: Online
|
Anyone know what ever happened to Masterasia? The zerg player.
|
Something just hit me the other day, why do you need an infestation pit to upgrade to Hive? It just seems an incredible random choise. Why not a Spire, Hydra den or an infestation pit in order to upgrade to Hive?
|
I guess they're just trying to keep with what they had in Brood War, where a Queen's Nest was required for Hive tech. And since the Brood War Queen performed the same role as the Infesetor except worse, Infestation Pit is required for Hive.
Also, since I can't create threads yet, does anyone know what Blizzard's NA Starcraft II servers' IP addresses are? So I can do stuff like try to ping them? So that when I disconnect, I can figure out what the problem is?
I swear one of these days I'm going to just get my own personal router, these disruptions are ridiculous.

Can anyone suggest good ZvZ builds for me? I always have problems early game when they can pump speedlings and I can't.

What do you do against protoss mass blink stalkers off of 1 base as a terran? I was prepared for a 4-gate and started building expansion but that guy just blinked into my base and moved away from bunkers killing tanks first and then marauders and marines.
I don't think I've done anything wrong. If I knew he wants to do that, I'd probably have more marauders, but I thought bunkers are enough.
any suggestions?

A safe ZvZ openner is a 14/14 (gas/pool) build where you immediately saturate the gas and remove your drones from gas at 92, 96 and 100 and immediately get speed and lings. If you suspect cheese changing to a 13/13 build will ensure you're safe, but a 14/14 build is generally fine against early pools as well, though you may need to use drones a little in the first engagement. Either allows you to transition in to either a variety of Speedling FE or any combination of pure ling, roach ling, or bling/ling builds safely.
Liquipedia has some more specific builds: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Zerg_Strategy#General_Builds

I'd probably have to see a replay to know what exactly happened, but if you're suspecting a 1 base blink allin, you want more bunkers. Did he use an observer or maybe a warp prism to spot up a cliff to blink, or did he just run up your ramp and go for it?
If you see your opponent 1 basing, as a general rule, build more barracks and feel OK cutting a couple scvs to get a couple bunkers up if money is tight. A missile turret will also be useful against voidrays/observers/DTs/non-range colossus rush, and will shut down attempts to blink up your ramp using the high-ground sight.

I just noticed that an article on IdrA in Lithuanian wikipedia has made it to the front page for this week (the article of the week) http://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Did anyone else's bonus pool go up by ~190 tonight? Had 31, logged off for about a half hour and when I logged in again I had 221. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything...?
|
Yeah, I got +100 once, then +180 another time. It seems to be some sort of textual glitch and you don't actually have that bonus pool, proven when I had 184 pool, won a game and lowered it to 180.
|
That gave me such false hopes. Immediately started SC2 and spamclicked multiplayer. 3 bonus pool.

Quick question regarding GSL, Due to the final placings and MLG/GSL exchange program can anyone confirm the 4 (DRG got CodeS) non koreans that will be given Code A status, from looking to me it seems:
8. SjoW 10. KiWiKaKi 12. NaNiwa 14. DeMusliM
Or am I totally wrong?

If you suspect a blink strategy like this then doing a "hold position" choke-line at the bottom of your ramp with SCVs/marines/marauders would stop letting the zealot (or any other unit beside a patrol probe - but the probe should die due to low hp) get up the ramp to gain vision of higher ground.

What do you think the helion upgrade reduction will do to mech play vs toss? Will a solely mech army (helions to counter zealots) survive the chargelots like they used to?
I know it really depends on composition, and how many helions, but I wonder if this new patch goes into effect how the ESCGoody's of the world will deal with this. Myself included.
Thanks

I have also indeed been playing quite a few Zergs on the ladder. Fortunately for me, that only translates into a ZvZ 1/3rd of the time.

"A question you are sure is super common but can't find the answer to via searching?"
My question: Is this chicken smarter/better looking than the blizzard employee/employees that decided to exclude Metalopolis from the ladder, instead of just removing close position, whilst still having Shattered temple WITH close position and not fixing that aswell?

You cannot spot stationary burrowed zerg units, like banelings, but you can spot moving burrowed zerg units, like infestors and roaches. There is a slight ripple animation in the ground.

Well I'm not sure if this forum is the correct place to really cover this question, being as it is one of the questions that have plagued mankind since the dawn of time. In much the same way as "which came first, the egg or the very handsome rooster mentioned and shown in your post" I can do my best to provide input but I don't think I can settle the extensive question here.
So first, we need to work out the various aspects to the question.
+ Show Spoiler [The Questions] +How smart is that rugged looking rooster?
Just how good looking is that fine specimen?
Which Blizzard employee(s) were responsible for the change?
How smart is the Blizzard employee who removed Metalopolis?
Just how good looking is the person/team at Blizzard who removed Metalopolis?
How smart is that rugged looking rooster?
Whilst there is of course no way to be certain without having the pleasure of meeting him, we can make guesses about his intelligence.
First, he clearly has some exceptional breeding history and so it is not unreasonable to assume he has inherited some potential for intelligence, so we know that if he uses it he's probably quite a competitor in the academic arts.
As we can see from his feet in the image he is clearly in the middle of perfecting his dancing skills, possibly something classical, and undoubtedly elegant. This means that we can assume he is well versed in both the theory and practice of the historic arts, all the while able to arrange his time to make sure he looks knee-weakening gorgeous every day, which cannot be a simple task.
Further looking in to the perfect orbs that are his eye's he is clearly pondering something of amazing importance...if only we could speak with him we might discover amazing new things about our universe. As it stands it is purely conjecture on our part, but clearly he is considering something of great importance, possibly years ahead of modern scientific advancement.
Overall, I think we can safely assume this chicken might well be the most intelligent being that has ever set foot on our planet.
Just how good looking is that fine specimen?
This is a question I don't think needs much time. Has there ever been a more majestic entity? A being that exudes more sexual magnetism? I must admit, his majesty is so overwhelming I'm finding it difficult to write this section, he's just so dreamy. I think we can all agree that matching his almost perfect, manly body would be impossible for almost any human.
Which Blizzard employee(s) were responsible for the change?
Ultimately, and sadly, there is no way to answer this. We don't know who removed it, or what their reasoning was even. It might have been a mistake that no-one wanted to own up to, or a malevolent plan to destabilise the StarCraft 2 community enough that they could manipulate us in to destroying the world as sick puppets of their will. At any rate, if we assume it was their best and brightest we can see if it is even possible that they could compete with my future husband, the sexy rooster. To do otherwise is to reach a conclusion already.
How smart is the Blizzard employee who removed Metalopolis?
As explained above, we find ourselves having to assume that the best and brightest at Blizzard were the ones who removed the map, so just how smart would that person be?
Clearly Blizzard has some truly great minds working for them. Mostly diabolically evil minds, but a genius rarely matched all the same. These are people who can make a knock off game, Warcraft in space, and have it become the greatest game of all time by just tweaking it to fool us, the masses. That's evil.
World of Warcraft is another example, they've enthralled over 10 million minds to the extent they'll pay for shiny star ponies that even they mock, where good normal people will pay every month at a chance to steal imaginary swords from one and other, and where every terrible expansion is the most anticipated game of any given year. Could there be a more evil or brilliant scheme? I don't think so.
Clearly, these are minds to be reckoned with.
Just how good looking is the person/team at Blizzard who removed Metalopolis?
Again, without an actual person for comparison we can't be certain, as with so many things that keep this a question that plagues our most distinguished scientists and philosophers. If we are to keep this comparison accurate we'll compare the most handsome man with the rooster, to try to keep the gender variable to the same. Now if we assume the average man is a 5/10 and we're taking the best looking person at Blizzard we can assume a very handsome guy, maybe coming in at an 8. If we adjust by +1 because I love nerds and he's probably a nerd, we can assume a 9/10. Not bad, whoever you are! (Call me)
So we can see that this question is unfortunately very subjective, and almost impossible to pin down, which is what makes it so difficult to answer. When it comes down to it, that chicken is probably the most intelligent and beautiful creature ever on the planet and so it is likely that yes, he is more intelligent and better looking than the person(s) responsible for the removal of Metalopolis.
+ Show Spoiler +I have no idea if that really is a male chicken, or anything about farm animals in general.
|
A very sophisticated answer to a seemingly pointless question.
I love it. <3
|
Anyway blizzard removed metalopolis because (EVEN WITH CLOSE SPAWN) it was 60% zerg favored (at least vs terran, I don't remember vs protoss). So if they let metalopolis and remove the close spawn, it would switch from 60% to probably 75-80%. Which means that you probably look like that chicken IRL.

I'm looking for a way to disable the right-click-to-rally feature. I've looked in the options but couldn't find anything and Google didn't want to help either. I'm starting to believe it's not possible. I want to disable it because I'm quite used to the BW way, and most importantly, since I'm not a very good player, when I move my units and tap on my production facilities to check them, I often end up right-clicking to move when I still have them selected, finding myself with a bunch of rallies in the middle of the map.

Well, in BW you right clicked to set rally points in the same way, you just couldn't rally to the mineral patch because they wouldn't automatically mine. So it really isn't all that different. I have had that happen on occasion, just don't jump the gun on right clicking to make your units to move while in actuality you are still selecting the building.

Wow. I just had to test because I didn't believe it :D For some reason in BW it *never* happened to me to mis-rally stuff. I guess it's something related to a lack of MBS which makes me paranoid about forgetting to rally some facilities. Oh well, bummer. Thanks anyway :D

When playing Zerg at the outset of a match, I very frequently fall a bit behind economically because I hit "S-D" so quickly the game doesn't even register the "S". Super insane APM not always a good thing!

Is mech even viable against toss nemore? i know bfh can help with zealot/ templar heavy armies but what about tanks and thors? Tanks seem useless cause blink and zealot legs... thors seem useless cause a HT can feedback it... it seems that change to the thors energy was to make them useless vs toss unless u emp them b4 every battle... which in itself is a waste because of the need for emp vs templar. maybe unseiges tanks? i was watching demuslims stream the other day and i never realized how much damage unseiged tanks can do! Thoughts? comments?

Part of the issue with mech is that TvP is a lot about mobility and dropping to kill pylons and buildings, and force protoss to use more than just 3-4 warpins to stop you-- something that's hard to do with hellion/tank.
If you really want to use mech, you want to do it in maps/positions where it's chokey and your tanks can deal damage without being shot at. Close positions shattered temple, maybe? But it's hard. Ghosts can EMP immortals, and protect your thors from HTs by EMPing your thors. Mech is difficult, and there's a reason it's not standard play in TvP.

I don't understand why people keep recommending that old season 2 finals. It was exiting at the time, sure, but that's because everyone was bad. Looking back on it, MKP really doesn't look like the hero I remember and it just isn't a good game without nostalga behind it. Besides, the only games he took off of NesTea were because of map imbalance (LT cliff drops, close positions etc.).

Can someone here tell me how you can remove one unit/building from selection with the keyboard only? I see a lot of people doing it on their streams but I never figured out how to do it. I think it would be very useful when sending probes to gas etc.
