With a 32-year-old speedster in bad form feels like it can go both ways. He looked bad. And it was the kind of bad that seemed to me that he wasn't really trying. I do hope for his sake that he can deliver in Barca

I think the Finnish HJK played their Europa League games indoors on some kind of turf. Far from ideal, but better than playing outdoors. And that was still group stage, so nowhere close to mid-winter.

But yeah this was stupid. I was there I took my shirt off, but there's a very good reason why they don't do CONCACAF in the north American winter or MLS in the winter. This was a combination of years of oppressive midday central American games, Qatar and covid forcing a short qualifying window. And no one objecting to Canada pulling the exact same shit in worse conditions.

So, although the ball clearly hit Watmore's hand before he lobbed the decisive pass to Crooks, referee Anthony Taylor deemed it to be accidental, as the ball had flicked up off the Middlesbrough man's body. This was subsequently checked by VAR Stuart Attwell, who endorsed Taylor's view. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/60266339 The result stings though given that it was almost a full strength Utd side

watmore made a poor first touch and he benefited from the handball with a completely outstretched arm by bringing the ball back into his control for an immediate assist. if thats not gonna be called handball nothing should be called handball.

And yes, all those jumping jack cross-blocking defenders are considered intentional. while i agree with the sentiment, the rest of your quote is wrong. the handball recommendations for interpretation have changed several times over the last couple of years, heck the one currently in place is like 1yo. it might seem similar to a 7 yo rule, but several changes were made in between. as an example, 3 or 4 years ago the recommended analysis was in relation to the player's volume (there is a specific term but i cant recall how to say it in EN) increasing or not due to arm position. cant recall if before or after that, it was every contact that had an impact on the outcome of the play. now there is space for the intentional or not interpretation, which is something that was not on the previous one.

I'm aware of those changes, but they do really not concern that 90% of handballs, where the interpretation of intentional (what you said about body surface) remained pretty much the same. Those changes were to my knowledge mostly aimed at header duels, where the ball dropped down and since jumping with arms completely tied to your body is nearly impossible always led to the craziest kinds of penalties. When it comes to blocking crosses, which is the majority of pens, not much has changed, except in some odd cases of players getting annihilated from 1m distance.
