There are cups and the Europa League. I don't know how this whole system would work, that'd mean the teams involved wouldn't play against their country's teams ever?
But for example, the Cup in the big leagues is a joke. Last 5 winners per country for the big leagues: Italy: Juventus x3, Napoli, Lazio Spain: Barça x3, Madrid, Atletico England: Arsena x3, MU, Wigan (FA Cup), City x3, MU, Chelsea (League Cup) Germany: Bayern x3, Dortmund, Wolfsburg France: Paris x3, Guingamp, Bordeaux (French Cup) Paris x5 (League Cup)
So apart from 1 or 2 exceptions, all those clubs would be in that super league. Small teams have no chance against these teams, especially when the cup is in 2-legs like it is in Spain, England or Italy. In some countries it doesn't even have any importance either, and sometimes the final is played as early as March (French and British League Cups). There's some potential to make those cups more important for the smaller teams if the big ones are out of it.
Thinking that Barcelona committed to 2 games against Celta, 2 against Espanyol, 2 against Valencia, and now one against Sevilla, to win a trophy that has very little importance and then to get eliminated after a pathetic game in a perfect-until-then CL run, makes me sad haha.
To much money in football now to do that nayumi. The games would be like 1/5 less than what they have now, thus UEFA can't profit commercially.
Can you run the Europa League alongside a champions super league though?
Hmm, that would mean after creating the "super league" of say 2 x leagues of 10 with a play off system and relegation. You would have them play it out with the "relegation spots" in league 2 be replaced by the top 4(?) of Europa league every year? Then top 4 in the respective leagues as it is now get into Europa League if you are not already in super league, if a team in top 4 already in Super League system, it just goes down one place? Hmm, im liking this atm haha, would also make Europa league much more interesting to, with the posibility of getting into the super league for a season (or more). Then you also still get your minnow teams into Europa like they are now so it's all fair?
Yo, UEFA, TL Footy thread just solved world peace Football!
Well, you can't have your domestic league + the super league, that'd be far too many games, and teams wouldn't care about the domestic league.
Also playoffs are kinda like the current CL. You can do a superleague season with 100% wins, 20 points ahead of #2 and not be champion? That's not good. If you have 2 groups and you have a final between both #1 teams, maybe...
You can do that if the Super League is like 10 or 12 teams, so it doesn't involve *too many* games.
Still, I prefer the current formula... the next CL with 4 teams directly qualified from the top 3 championship is already kinda like a Super League anyway.
It would most likely be a franchise with no links to the domestic leagues, like the NBA or NFL. That would be easier to sell as a PR move by having the domestic league retain some prestige, and it would probably be a two league system so they can say "but we still have relegation".
Fans would hate it.. away games almost impossible to attend, no derbies. But I think it will happen one day.

Oh misunderstanding, there will be no play off in Super League Premier (division 1/whatever you want to call it) play offs are for Division 2, for playoffs like you have in regular divisions. Whoever is top of Super League = champion of EUROPE :3
Yeah like said, the league would be 10 teams, thus its just 18 games to fit in over the year which should be fine. Or if that isn't fine, then you just play teams once in neutral locations around Europe. Bayern vs Real Madrid at Wembley or Chelsea vs Juventus in Allianz arena.

Not really, because the group stage and round of 16 are seeded. For big teams, you're almost guaranteed to be in quarter finals nowadays. If we don't have a super league, they should at least do non-seeded/no country restrictions group stages + full draw like winner group A plays runner-up group B, etc.
I like the current format and see no reason to change anything - other than people's mentalities. Domestic league is a much better indicator of how good a team is performing throughout a season than the champions league is. Top two teams in Europe to me this season are still City and Barcelona even with both of them missing out on top 4 of CL.
Knockout games don't give as good of an indicator of skill as league format does. But they create the most drama and excitement. Having both is a good thing. And if your team is one of the best teams and they lose out one season because of bad luck or a single bad performance? Try again next year.
Shut down the FA-cup and Copa del Rey. Make it a whole new big league! This way we will get a more deserved winner!
Cup tournaments have their very own charm, nothing beats the nerve of a knockout game. Wigan knocking out City, Roma knocking out Barca. These nights are what its all about! Cup is cup and the ball is round, as we say in Norway.

But both City and Barca lost a lot of steam in their leagues as well.

And yet they are winning them comfortably. League play is always the best indicator of overall performance, it will have its dips and surges.. Whats your point..
