No matter what his performance was in his GSL code S group, he's still super super good. I'd place him at 2nd best foreigner probably. Sase as well is looking pretty good at the moment and I believe also didn't try for it? Not sure. Naniwa tried, but he failed to qualify. Naniwa has a habit of failing in these sorts of 1-3 day deals, unfortunately. Might be more of a recent slump, but NaNiwa did fairly well at weekend tournaments during 2011 and early 2012 (consistent top MLG placings), but I think he got too much into the GSL mindset and finds it difficult to win without preparation beforehand.
He also doesn't know how to win vs zerg anymore.

The fact that Sweden got 3 and Ukraine only got 2 slots while Germany had 4 players qualifying, In addition to have one player direct qualifying to World final. That is actually bullshit, Germany is well behind in the SC2 scene and should have been happy to get even equal amount of slots to Sweden or Ukraine. And to be fair it seems EU will have pretty good representation regardless.
On the other hand is the fact that NA gets even amount of slots to EU even worse. Naniwa got 4th in Sweden and was knocked out, period. While Huk got 10th in Canada and 9th in NA and still managed to go to Shanghai. Lucky for Huk that Blizzard is based in NA when the skill fails. Yeah NA getting so many more spots kinda sucks, top EU players are so much better than top NA players outside of Scarlett. I don't agree Dodgin. I think its very important that the NA scene is well represented. Yep, that's why they need more spots than koreans and europeans... so they can even the field;p
What I'm trying to say is Blizzard is trying to make Starcraft into a global sport. This is a world championship and not Korea+Stephano championship

Not fair either that Africa is taking 7 spots in the world cup in football. But its one of the reason why the World cup is amazing

Note how he goes 0-2 out of Code S straight into Code A round 1 as soon as the next Code S season started after going to all these foreigner tournaments and losing early. Don't forget that Naniwa won an MLG in 2011 and got second at Providence.
Well, yeah, but I started seeing this slump from him in big international tournaments starting from one of the earlier Dreamhacks this year, back when he was still doing well in Code S. People all chucked it up to him practicing for PvT and PvP and not practicing his PvZ at the time, because those were his opponents in Code S, but it continued and he never made a tournament finals from that time on.

Now let's see what Luci brings to the table.
Naniwa in his current shape would never ever win this event, far too many good Zergs in it

Naniwa's always been difficult to predict.
His PvX openings are almost always different to whatever the current established meta-game of the day is.
Sometimes he looks among the very best players in the world, sometimes it just doesn't quite come together and he goes on a losing streak because of it.
Regardless, despite losing in Code S he didn't actually look bad, he had the right answers, just didn't execute right.

On what grounds?
EU has a population of 740 million, NA has a population of 528 million. Skill wise I'd argue they're not on par.
But then I kind of agree as a lot of the viewers and money comes from NA so.
