I think it is accurate to say "mutant" as the new versions of the virus does indeed have different properties than the original strain. Vaccine efficiency and immunity will have to be investigated again for each successful mutation.

It depends. A flu season can have up to a billion estimated cases a year, but is obviously a lot less deadly.

The Netherlands has implemented a nightly curfew because infections numbers were not going down enough. Of course this brings a lot of tension since it has a big influence on people's lives, and it's the first time something has been implemented since the world war, but now for several days, protests against the curfew have been hijacked by bored people, criminals, football hooligans and extremists to just riot, loot and destroy shops, cars and other things in many city centers all over the country.

People also burned down a corona test location earlier this week...

Makes me sad how stupid people are. Starting to doubt if we as society are capable of beating the virus with just prevention measures because people clearly don't care enough. I really hope the vaccines work very effectively, or 2021 is going to be a another awful year.

Yes, it's all over BBC. Really surprising news. I always thought the Dutch were the more grounded ones in Europe. I've been to Rotterdam for a work trip before - one of the most pleasant and peaceful cities in Europe (compared to Rome, Madrid, London, etc). I can totally imagine settling down there. People seem really civic-minded.

I suppose there's always a few rotten apples in every barrel. Hope everything gets better!

I've been to Rotterdam for a work trip before - one of the most pleasant and peaceful cities in Europe (compared to Rome, Madrid, London, etc). I can totally imagine settling down there. That's probably because you never went to the poorer parts of Rotterdam. Not all parts of our cities are very pleasant to live in. They're a minority though like you said. Just frustrated kids without any other way to take the pressure off.

I imagine its a lot of football hooligans bored that they can't have their football riots and having found a new excuse to get in a good fight.

And because they are now not centred around a stadium but spread throughout the country the riot police has trouble keeping things under control.

Mostly I am sickened by it. These are not protests, these are people looking for a riot. Teargas em, rubber bullets and arrest every single one of them. Thanks to the curfew there are no innocent people around so go ham on them, they want a fight, give it to them. They will find no sympathy.

Lucky for me Tenerife has been getting way better as of late. So now I can at least go to the gym and do things with a small group of people.

Not sure what you mean by peaceful (aggressive people or just noise?), but it's hardly surprising considering rome for example caters around 30 times the amount of tourists compared to Rotterdam.

I've been dozens of times to the netherlands (starting from 30 years ago, shopping in Venlo for coffee, and going to stock car races in Baarlo, to frequently visiting amsterdam etc), and there's simply less tourism. I don't find it particularly more peaceful than the places i stayed in rome (we book airbnbs in the non-touristy areas like Trastevere, though that has gotten worse over the years admittedly in regards to tourists - you can tell by the fact that when we first got there, barely any shop owner/employee or waitress spoke english, now everyone does).

And not every blade of grass is green either, there's parts of rotterdam (and amsterdam etc) which aren't nice (southern parts in my experience), much like any other city.

That said: i've seen much, much worse, and i actually didn't expect to see violent riots in the netherlands either.

I mean it's not like some mass movement, mostly just like 50 to a few hundred opportunists in most places. Generally everything is still normal, and now volunteers are cleaning up streets etc. But yeah if it happens in multiple places at the same time it's still a lot of chaos.

I just hope the curfew won't radicalize more people and grow in some larger unrest. I also hope it actually has significant effect on infections numbers, since such a strong measure was always going to cause strife in society so if it doesn't have much impact on the infections than it was really not worth it.

In southern Germany we had curfew for the last 6 weeks and nothing like this happened. Pretty happy about that. There are only some YT vids where people are driving around late, get stopped by the police and get into "word battles" with them

I didn't even know Netherlands had a football hooliganism problem (as opposed to, say, Italy and the Balkans).

To address the other posters (sorry, I don't know how to mult-quote in a single post):

By 'peaceful', I mean idyllic and laidback. Everyone seemed rather private, respectful, and minding their own business. I didn't have single unpleasant encounter with anyone in 4-5 days. Amsterdam was 'rowdier' and 'less peaceful'. Riots breaking out there wasn't a surprise (to me).

It's not really about tourism and crowds. It's more about a cultural thing? To give a not so perfect analogy: I would not be surprised of 'rowdy' protests breaking out in HK and maybe Taiwan. But Tokyo and Singapore? Definitely.

Sorry, I'm probably quite ignorant of the nuances in European culture. Just stating my observation from an outsider, that's all. No offense taken, I hope.

Hooligans from Rotterdam damaged a Bernini-made fountain in Rome when visiting AS Roma a few years ago.

'private, respectful, and minding their own business' is a pretty decent description of the average person here yes, but doesn't mean we don't have our lowlifes. And really, even if you'd just meet one of the hooligans separately it could very well be a pleasant and joyful encounter too, it's just some people lose their minds in a group setting where you have to show off your 'toughness', or under influence of substances.

I think a difference with Germany is from what I heard from friends that work there that Germans put a lot more respect towards traditional hierarchy systems whereas Dutch society is general more flat. People would greet the boss every day by going all out: Good Morning 'title+lastname' while here you'd just nod/wave/say simply 'hi'. But yeah Germany is a big nation so maybe this isn't true for other places at all.

But still, like our prime minister tries his best to go to work on a bicycle just to not appear any higher than other people. So I can imagine Germans handling a government mandated curfew with more respect than Dutch people, just by culture. The current riots are still very much an outlier though and not something that happens often.

I'm pretty worried about the increasing amount of people who get all the news from facebook and youtube bubbles. Stuff like anti-vax and climate change denial and now covid-denial or covid-ignorance, it's all a lot less fringe than it used to be.

My county is hit really hard by covid-19, and it feels like every other day I hear about someone I know or a reletive of someone I know have tested posetive. Today I got a really werid sensation... I am starting to getting used to it, there is just no energy to freak out. A few months ago, it was new and much more scary. Maybe it is also because of the vast majority of very mild cases. The hospitals are on the very limit, however, I really hope they pull through and that the curve cracks soon (it hasn't yet...)

To me its different.
I'm starting to be more dilligent. I explain that with better mental health on my part - I am more equipped to deal with adversity instead of ignoring it as much as I allowed myself to do earlier - and the occurence of the more contagious variants meaning it's arguably as important if not more important to be vigilant than before.

My grandparents in law both surviving an infection in the last weeks underscores that it can hit everyone. They probably got it from an elderly day care.
They don't live in a crowded area, don't party hard and stuff. Don't see that many people directly. Still got it.

I actually did not say anything about being dillingent or not. Of course I am very, very careful! It takes a special kind of asshole not to be when the local healthcare system is hanging on by a thread!

It was more that my personal reaction to hearing about new cases in my circles are changing as they get more numerous.
