On the police: The more you believe in structures and the necessity of order the more you gravitate to the right. It's a common thing with people who get older too. As a result I've made the observation in multiple countries that the police is commonly right and quite often far right. Same with the military.
Naturally it would be nice if these institutions were aware of that and actively fighting it, but it's not like people are fighting for these jobs, so a lot of rabble gets in.

This is actually worse because it implies that she had a line and that everything up until now was, for her, acceptable. I genuinely have less of a problem with zealots who would lay down their lives for Trump than people who draw the line here because at least zealots don't pretend to have morality beyond serving the great leader. I heavily disagree. While I personally think very little of Trump and most of his policies, I get that people view people closer to them in political opinion more favorable and are more likely to make excuses for their behavior. With mass media being increasingly interested in strong headlines and decreasingly interested in reporting what actually happened it's pretty easy to see how a conservative republican and a left winged democrat can get very different views of the same events. Storming the capitol while armed however is an act of rebellion and terrorism and there's no way to sugarcoat that. Right, but nothing about Trump changed between yesterday and today. Resigning when he started baselessly calling the election rigged would have been a matter of principle, resigning now is a matter of self-preservation. There's a difference between your boss babbling his usual incoherent conspiracy nonsense and seeing a bunch of violent lunatics get inspired to storm the capitol. It sounds absurd, but Trump's nonsense gets dismissed so often even by his supporters that maybe for her that was the wake up call that the words of the president of the USA actually are important.
I have a conspiracy happy family member who has a great need to broadcast his bs to everyone. Despite the fact that I'm fairly sure there are a bunch of lunatics out there who read his stuff and feel spoken to I commonly ignore whatever he's writing, because fighting him really isn't worth my time. That would change if the lunatics would start committing violent acts clearly inspired by his opinions.

Republican Senators still getting up there asking for an election commision. These people need to go fuck themselves.

Ben Sasse had a powerful speech. I thoroughly enjoyed it, I would definitely grab a beer with him.

Where was he when Trump was being impeached for abuse of power? Where was he when Trump was appointing SCOTUS seats? Words are cheap. He was witness to Trump's excesses and he did less than nothing, he actively enabled Trump. He offers words now when there's nothing more Trump can do for him but it's clear that his problem isn't with Trump's fascism, it's that Trump's fascism no longer offers him any advantages. He doesn't have a problem with Trump trying to seize power, only with him trying and failing.

It's like the double dipping Olympics for some of them
The election was rigged but we strongly condemn acting as if the election was rigged

If you watch to the end you can see how the barricade there didn't make sense anymore as the perimeter was breached and the protestors were already behind the police there. This wasn't the police being on the side of the protestors its that the whole thing was fucked with terrible leadership.
Other video has shown that people were brawling with police inside the capitol. I think it shows that the commander was not prepared with enough manpower for the protests and panicked before retreating inside of the building.
Trump refused to call the national guard at the start and I doubt made sure there was enough police for the people he was sending to the capitol.

Several reporters are saying the cabinet is considering invoking the 25th. April Ryan earlier, and Margaret Brennan now.

And our election wasn't rigged, only the president's. Even though they were on the same ballot.

Senator Hawley is up. Here we go.
|
Here's a shower thought, Trump is probably more stressed being locked out of twitter right now and having to stay silent than he is during actual *diplomatic crisis. Hopefully his close advisors can convince him to take a sleeping concoction and then let the little baby nap nap.

If Hawley and any of the other nine objectors had an iota of decency and self-reflection, they would apologize for their little quixotic stunt. Otherwise their flowery speeches mean nothing.

Funniest thing I heard today was Manchin saying that some of the GOP senators were telling him in private that they weren't aiming to overturn the election and had no idea how anyone got the idea that was what they had wanted.

Hawley defending his objection by saying this is the proper forum to discuss the election.
Hawley claims that this objection is vital to the process.
Now moving towards Pennsylvania laws and why PA election was bad. He's harping on the use of mail-in ballots and the rule changes last year.

He, and every other republican that does not like trump, was putting there job security above there morals. Doing the right thing would have been political suicide. In the end, they couldn’t stomach losing their privilege.

Romney looks terrible. One of the last stand up Republicans left.

Romney is not mincing words, calling it an insurrection led by Trump.

Reports are now trickling in that definitely confirm that Trump refused to call the guard for a long time. No one seems to have confirmed the Pence rumors.
Here's one via wapo.
