I'm not sure what this refers to but I do find it interesting. If you're talking about Offa's dyke it seems way more likely that it was constructed from the English side, as protection from welsh invaders. ![]()

I wouldnt say digging a canal there is pure fantasy, but then they'll probably have to put their whole GDP into it for decades. 10 billions is a veeeery low estimate for a canal. It's pretty much what the panama canal costs, and it's a 75km canal on a very flat land. Iran's one is 15 times longer on a ridiculously difficult terrain

Of course, it depends on how big you want the ships that are able to pass through to be.

Because if you dig the canal out, you could also just dump the earth next to the spot you dug it from, and basically have a wall. Of course, it depends on how big you want the ships that are able to pass through to be. A canal is also much more efficient than a wall at doing border wall things, though

There will be very long stretches without any locks where there is normally water. If the water is far below the ground level you might have problems and it would be easier to just stretch a few ropes across and walk over them as a temporary bridge. You only have a problem if you actually guard it as a border. If water level is close to ground level you could just swim over. It won't be very wide since it would be expensive to dig out. The problem being getting up on the other side. If you have a contact with a rope that part is solved. I am assuming it is more like a U than a V for this. Since a V takes a lot of water when raising water level. If it is a V, just swim over and walk away.

Ok, so I've never really understood the appeal of the whole Harry Potter hype - grade schoolers on brooms holding wands yelling "alakazahm" just seemed silly to me ( btw. wasn't that a Shaq movie in the 90s - alakazahm??) Unfortunately, my girlfriend is a Harry Potter nut and for more than a decade she's tried everything to get me to read or watch anything Harry Potter related (not on a daily basis, but whenever the topic comes up). So here's my quiestion: Are there any good reasons to read/ binge watch H.P. other than just making her happy? I mean in my head I've got this image, that it's gonna be like whole week with her in the "candles and drapes" section at Ikea. (*I know that section doesn't actually exist, they're just the 2 most boring things, I could think of) ![]()

Granted, i think a lot of the Harry Potter appeal is that people have grown up with it and wish fullfillment while being young, but it is also a generally quite interesting world. So i would say just try it with an open mind. If you go into it with the idea of "I am going to read this to make my girlfriend happy", you are not going to have a good time. No matter what "this" specifically is in this situation. I also think that "x seems silly, so i don't want it" is usually something that people who take themselves too serious and to whom being taken serious is way too important say. Something being silly does not disqualify it from being fun.

Also, you might find interest in approaching it with a "scientific" mind : its huge success didn't come from nowhere, there are reasons explaining that success. If you're not interested in the universe per se, you might try to use your reading/watching to try to find and analyze these reasons.

Is a great Harry Potter Fanfiction/alternate take. I would suggest it to your girlfriend if she hasn't read it yet.

I think I'll get the audio book of the 1st one(it's free on audible), that way I can drop some book knowledge bombs and keep a poker face (incase the cringe gets turned up to eleven), when we watch the movie. ![]() that people who take themselves too serious I think that's the main issue here. I've been DM'ing since the mid 90s and compared to the vast world of D&D for example the Potter universe seems a little small and immature.
