On September 25 2014 05:45 Ben... wrote:+ Show Spoiler +I had a class exactly like this before I switched from math to CS (this was one of the classes that caused me to switch out of math). All lectures were like any other math class. No programming mentioned at all. All assignments were pure programming. There was no CS prerequisites for this class. We were not told ahead of time that we were expected to know how to program. We didn't find out until three weeks in that we had to do a ton of programming for the assignments. Of course this is just a few days past the "drop without any financial penalties" day and any opportunity to get into a different class so I tried to soldier through it before giving up and dropping it.
From what I heard, less than a quarter of the class passed that year. I dropped out of the class before it would cause any penalties on my transcript. The next year the class had a different professor and more than half the class passed. I saw a couple of the assignments and they seemed far more related to the topic and reasonable.
The quality of who the professor is becomes so important as time goes on. In first year classes, it doesn't really matter, but once you get past those intro classes, bad profs can really burn you. + Show Spoiler +Funny, you pretty much described my class exactly. + Show Spoiler +Is it normal to have a project assignment on your freshman year of college to pick a topic out of a large variety of arcane topics that were barely touched on in class and to do original research on it? I have to write a proposal for my topic by tomorrow and I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Sort of freaking out about it.
The class is basically a twice-a-week seminar that touches on some basic mathematical concepts and relates them to the general idea of information/coding. Also some history of coding thrown in there too.

+ Show Spoiler + I don't know how common it is in math classes, but I've had to do that in basically every humanities course I've ever taken, except we usually didn't have the luxury of being provided a list of topics to pick from. Having four such classes my first semester of college made that November a real bitch.

+ Show Spoiler +Man, most of my day revolves around going to school, going on TL and reddit, and playing StarCraft. It gets lonely being me. What am I going to do? I don't think I can live like this.

+ Show Spoiler + I'm a 2nd year graduate student in Computer Science. This year, the department decided they wanted to let in 80 more graduate students than usual, which has put a significant strain on course enrollment, not to mention 1st year grad students get earlier enrollment as well. I barely got into 2 graduate-level courses, and I spent all of my last year mainly doing research in the most brutal lab in the department along with other work, so I couldn't take enough classes to finish my Master's degree coursework in a single year.
Well, that's all fine and dandy, but it is impossible to enroll into undergrad courses, some needed for breadth requirements, as the online system doesn't allow it. The only way to get into these classes is to get direct clearance from the professor.
I need one more of these breadth reqs. and I can't even get into it. I have a full time job starting in January, so I can't stick around another term. I need to finish by December. I also need a third class to enroll in anyways. When it was my time to enroll, these classes had openings anyways, but for the aforementioned reason, I couldn't enroll.
I emailed the professors earlier in the summer, and the reply was really iffy leaning towards no... you would think a graduate student who is graduating this quarter would get some leeway, right? Hell no. What the hell is wrong with these professors? Just let me have the damn class, and let me graduate.

+ Show Spoiler + Just about at wit's end with this one professor I have this term. He's easily the worst professor I've ever had. He gives us obscenely long, overly cryptic assignments that don't actually have everything we are supposed to do in them. For one of the questions in the last assignment he not only left out a few minor details, he left out so many major details that what we had to do didn't even closely represent the assignment specification and groups that followed that spec failed. We were to arrange memory in a certain way, which was not mentioned anywhere in the assignment. Likewise, his description for another question was missing key information that completely changed what had to be done. We were informed of this second thing the day before the thing was due. When people pointed out how much stuff was missing from the assignment specification and asked if he could add it to the assignment so we knew what to do he started talking in an incredibly condescending manner towards them and sort of implied they were idiots. So far we've had roughly one change to the assignment per class, none of it documented anywhere. It's not minor stuff either. A bunch of groups nearly failed/failed a "check-in" part of the assignment over the previously mentioned memory structure requirement, which again, was never once in the assignment specification.
I've seriously considered discussing this professor's conduct with someone higher up or formally filing a complaint. Either that or dropping the class, which I have been thinking about more and more the last while. He's made it quite apparent that he has no intention of being any more accomodating than he currently is. 15 people have already dropped out. I have a feeling after the midterm that number will double or more.

It's just a reminder that no matter how 'advanced' humans are, we still are descendants of people who burned others alive for being 'witches'

+ Show Spoiler +Have you tried talking to the chair of the department that you need the class in? The professors may have limited sway but the chair will be able to make stuff happen. If you explain that you might not graduate on time he/she may be more accommodating than the professors who don't have skin in the game.

+ Show Spoiler +I want to liquidate my downstairs neighbors. They can all go fuck themselves in the ass with a ten-foot pole. I work full time and I go to school, which means I need to sleep. They party every fucking night. I call the cops at least once a week. I'm on track to get about 5 and a half hours of sleep tonight, if that. Meanwhile, my roommate is acting like it's a Greek fucking tragedy that he has to go to school and his parents pay for everything and why can't he just live on the street and paint? Fucking...I can't even...

Advisors and the enrollment administration is responsible for that sort of thing. What ended up happening is I went to fucking war with the department (in a very nice and polite manner) and I won. All is resolved, with the possibility of replacing this one ridiculous 8 am class with a later and easier one. I want to have chill last quarter anyways :D

+ Show Spoiler +Fuck Twitch chat, my god. It's intolerable and is getting worse, nowadays you seem to have to find a sub-500 viewer stream to ever have any kind of discussion on what is actually on stream.
I didn't used to mind the Twitch-specific memes, but now there seems some unwritten rule that they HAVE to be used at all times.
Really it pisses me off, because like YouTube comments before it, it ruins a potential great link between content creator and consumer. It's not a case of ignoring it, because the spam is so much that it acts as white noise preventing decent discussion.
If I never have to see another Avilo/winter debate in a COMPLETELY UNRELATED STREAM ever again I may be able to yet die a contented soul.

+ Show Spoiler +well i thought I'd at least get E rank on fish but I just kept losing on the F rank...I'm C rank on iccup and I'd be able to touch the C+ players but right now it's just. I never realized how good the koreans actually were until I started playing them. Only now do i realize how far apart the skill rift is between the foreigners and the koreans. I think I really am going to retire after this 10+ game losing streak. Some of those games I made mistakes but damn you just....i have so much more respect for the progamers and just anyone who can get up to the ranks. The only thing I'm happy about on Fish is you have way more terran players. You know that saying that if you're actually any smart you'll realize you know absolutely nothing. I think I know nothing. Absolutely nothing.

+ Show Spoiler + FUCK ME
Seriously, this weekend until these next two weeks are going to be fucking BRUTAL. 4 exams on different subjects (two classes of which I know nothing about yet, have to read through several chapters), paper to write, shit ton of written homework, the list goes on and on... I can't even organize my thoughts on when to do everything without stressing out. Honestly, I wasn't even procrastinating that bad, everything just decided to pour out at once.
I haven't been able to eat properly lately. Oh, and bloods been coming out of my stool for the past four days. Awesome.
